  • As Uber's stranglehold over the taxi industry increases, some New York yellow cab dispatchers have found themselves in an unprecedented predicament: sitting on millions of dollars worth of medallion yellow cabs, but not enough drivers to drive them.

      Uber is a scam but not so much to the passenger but to the individual Uber driver. He/she will not make enough money to be able to afford a replacement car when the time comes. It cost more of less a fixed amount per mile to operate any car including gas, insurance, repairs and the big one...depreciation. Uber drivers do not make enough per mile they drive to cover their per mile cost. They might make enough to cover gas, insurance and repairs but not depreciation.

      Largely the reason Uber gets away with this is short changing the driver and also being pumped with investor money so they can cheat the market rates they should be charging until they can push out the competition

    Hard to feel any sympathy when a corrupt business goes down the drain. It is not just New York. Back in 1988 I was in Chicago and it was cheaper to rent a limo to the airport than take a cab. They have been price gouging for years, and giving shitty service. I won't shed a single tear for the US taxis. 😀🍹🇵🇭

Also, just because taximagic existed before Uber doesn't mean the market should use the product. Taxis in New York will become Blockbuster Video if they don't adapt and change. It's not Ubers fault, it's the medallion system that is holding them back. In Toronto if you call an Uber you might get a marked taxi show up but working as an Uber, using the app to pay not going by the meter. You either adapt to change and go with the flow or you die off pretending that things were better the way it used to be. Netflix didn't kill Blockbuster Video, the slowness to evolve the business model did.

    Competition is a good thing, a million dollars for a medallion is thievery and that cost isn't just transferred to customers. My uncle was a cab driver for a while before Uber and he had to pay 100 dollars a day to use the cab (a car worth less than that would raise in a couple months). He didn't even break even every day at first. Any politician who interprets the problem to be Uber rather than the regulations on yellow cabs is pulling money right out of our pockets.

      The politicians are selling out the working class and the new generation bought into it. How is it fair to work the same job for less pay than about 3 years ago.

    Heres a problem with old cabs.
    1. They need to go tech as well. Instead the old call and come, people like to use applications to do it.
    2. Most of the app-based transportation is CHEAPER. CLEANER. FRESHER. Than those cabs. WHY? Because it's the owner's car, so they maintain their cars well. Unlike cabs, the owner of the car is not the driver, but the corporation.
    3. The app-based driver are more humble than cabs driver.
    4. Have you ever go in the cab as a foreigner and the cab driver just go somewhere else instead of the place you told him? They are trying to make you pay more for the trip. Meanwhile, app-based transportation has a FIXED price. So if the driver try to delay you, they are the one that is wasting gasoline. Because you pay them EXACTLY as the app said.
    5. Cabs = More traffic. Meanwhile app-based transportation is THEIR own vehicle, so in other word, we are just 'renting' their cars.
    This is my personal thoughts about cabs.

    Uber is doing to yellows,what Walt Mart did to a lot of stores thruout the country.

    • @williamparker7823
      @williamparker7823 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wal mart sold convenience at lower prices. If people can do 90% of their shopping at one store and save 10% instead of going to 4 different stores, they will. I hate to see mom and pop stores closing but the non specialty stores had limited options at a higher markup. The specialized stores got taken out by online retailers that can have bigger selections without having main street lease prices. It's not wal mart to blame for others not adapting. Even wal mart can't keep up with Amazon for online orders or long tail items. In 10 years or so something will probably come along and kill Amazon too. The yellow cabs are losing because they haven't adapted to market changes. Nobody wants to pay more for unreliable services just because of tradition.

      Gregory Everson But whoever said that the uber drivers were going to be paid a mint??? If uber wants to stay in business, it must COMPETE. That means charging a lower price for service than the yellow cabs. And from that lower price, the uber drivers wages are derived. The goal isn't to charge a kings ransom for one ride. The goal is to charge a lower rate than the yellow cabs and to get as many fares in your cab as possible. Volume.

    If you watch some videos on TH-cam, some taxis drivers they will not pick up certain people because of what they look like and to see if they have the money or some cause of location.The taxi, they charge more and all they do is drive Around in till they find someone Or dispatch. They take to long maybe bout 15-20 min. I was in New York last year and I put a thumbs up for taxi & yelling for one, Four (4) taxi drove right by me and one pick me up 20 minutes later finally got one. In Manhattan But with Uber it takes about 10 - 15 minutes because of traffic. But the thing with Uber yall know you'll have a nice clean car. you know It will be a little cheaper, you don't have to worry about dirty smoking smell. With uber dont mater where your at. Not like taxi where you have to look for one or call one.Taxi some get cash rob With uber money already on the app ready to go no need to worry about being rip off. There's so much but can't say.

    Is it mean for me to say, screw them?
    For decades, yellow taxis never served NYC outside of Manhattan or its two airports. Yellow taxi drivers would also routinely refuse to transport anyone from midtown or lower Manhattan to black or latino neighborhoods like Harlem or Washington Heights. In Queens, as in Brooklyn and the Bronx, we had to rely on private car services that needed to be called to request a ride. This became much easier to do once cell phones became more common. The only other vehicles you could just step into right on the street were the Jamaican dollar vans in Brooklyn and Southeast Queens. They operated in a legal gray area. Yellow taxis also had a long-standing reputation of refusing to pick up black or brown passengers, even when the drivers themselves were black or brown. But these livery cab companies, the dollar vans and even the highly illegal gypsy cabs thrived in the outer boroughs precisely because these areas were never serviced by yellow taxis.
    So for thumbing their noses at racial minorities and anyone outside of Manhattan, I really don't care f they die out or if the medallions become worthless. The medallion holders (most of whom do not drive but made money renting their medallion out to other drivers) who are losing on their investment? They should've driven private taxis and served more New Yorkers all those years. What goes around comes around.

    • @ArchOfWinter
      @ArchOfWinter 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I would argue the opposite. Yellow being more capitalist and Uber more communist (by the economic theory, not government theory).
      Yellow are corporate controlled. They compete with other cab companies by buying out limited number medallion. Drivers work for with set amount of time. The fleet of vehicles are company owned. Capitalism.
      In theory, communism is about a worker driven economy, not corporate. Workers set their own hours. The vehicles are driver owned. The drivers choose who to pick up. While Uber drivers does have corporate to answer to, the Uber company is more or less a means to coordinate and transfer money. They don't directly command their fleet of cars and drivers. Again, this is looking at it from economic theory, not government ideology.

      You make a good point, though I think Darren was speaking more in terms of general distinctions i.e. Where Uber is privately owned and undercutting Yellow with a more sought after taxi solution. Yellow having relatively heavy government oversight by comparison makes it less adaptive and less able to quickly change to provide a service people want. Making Yellow cab appear more communist like in operation, in the abstract. Even if technically/ economically it's the reverse.

      @ivank20r 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah you are right about i mean the google self driving cars already driving around california however the thing that will cause more than 10 years to figure out is that when the car fails a sensor goes haywire makes the car steer onto incoming traffic then who would take the vehicular manslaughter charges someone would be responsible so at the end of the day i think we would required a driver

    • @geni15o
      @geni15o 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL you're way too optimistic, even for your own good. Self-driving cars are coming in a few decades for merchandise transportation or trading or financial services etc. It's gonna take much longer - I say truly never, since there is a huge percentage of people who like to drive themselves and not let a computer drive them, even if it's 'safer' (which by the way isn't the case, cars need to be 99.999999% accurate, they're about 95-99% right now, and achieving the 99.9999... can take longer than all of those combined :)).
      So self-driving cars are a good option to spend some money on stock markets or something, but don't keep your hopes on seeing them on the streets like normal cars, at least not for another 20-30 years.

It's always fun when numerous cabs just drive right past you with the light on and when they do stop to pick you up they're usually really rude. You also have no idea if they're going to choose to go the long way around to try to make more money off of you because they think you're a tourist and you have no idea how much it's going to cost. With the apps you can get a car and know exactly how much it will cost most of the time. Plus, you usually get to rate the drivers using the apps. If we could rate yellow cabs I bet most would have a worse rating than they'd like or would be forced to be more accommodating and polite to passengers

      Evan Kolar why? Uber is far easier to use as you can just pull out your phone and press a few buttons while for cabs you have to yell at the top of your lungs and get bypassed 17 times because you spilled coffee on your shirt. *The better company always comes out on top*. Uber does not have a monopoly. If they decided to raise prices to highway robbery then a similar but different company would just overthrow them. That's capitalism and it works!

      wilroth2403 yeah , they should repaint the taxis and sell them , since they are pretty much parked on side of the road, waiting for a driver

    This situation reminds me a lot of the dilema newspapers are now facing. They overcharged for many years, news was printed the night before, now i can get news for the cost of internet and it's fresh news updated the second it happens.
    NYC had that weird car service thing long before Uber/Lyft. plus i remember unmarked vans going around on to take people to places, i don't know what that was called but i was on it a few times.

    The girl taxicab driver was on Andrew Zimmerman show about food. She drove him around to offbeat places to get great food

    Reasonly those yellow cabs are starting to over charge their customers. For example they would charge airport fare when people are just going to new Jersey from Manhattan, refusing to use the meter. It's time they have some competition. Hopefully they will adapt and survive.

    i mean in my country cabs are flourishing becuase of uber because they get to use uber etc while being a regular cab as well. in most cabs having 3-4 phones open at the same time each with a different taxi service app (uber, lift, grab etc.)

    I'm not a taxi driver driver myself but it's a pain in the butt to get a taxi and be overcharged. With Uber it's what time is going to arrive and what's price . That helps a lot to determine should I get a Uber or should I take the subway or bus. Yellow Cabs are never going to end. Its still be around just not a whole lot.
    There's always somebody on the Curve that needs a quick ride

    In a developing countries in Asia, they combined a ride hailing app similar to Uber with regular taxi and payment has a cash only option. Which proves that we can have both worlds.

    He was making 400 dollars in 1 day by driving a taxi? That's insane. No wonder they can't compete now, fuck that why should a passenger pay so much money just to get somewhere.

    Maybe it’s the price of the medallions; which leads to overcharging the customer. Adapt or die.

    Hpw does uber get in the taxi business in NY where it is probably the most tightly restricted service in the country?
