And Leonardo DaVinci drew human muscles in great detail. Yet when taught in school its as if he just guessed or imagined what they looked like under the skin... No. nobody can do that... He dissected several people.
So does your local coroner, and the mortician who set up shop in your town. And researchers who jump at the opportunity to dissect people who donated their body to science upon death...
Its a thing, Ben Franklin was a smart man, he studied everything from french to cadavers to picking up chicks. Lol.
Keep in mind, in the 1700s science was considered evil. And not far from Franklins home in America, they had a witch trial...

The legality of dissecting cadavers varied from nation to nation and throughout time from the middle ages to the renaissance and beyond. For example Rembrandt painted "The anatomy Lesson of Doctor Tulp" in the early 1600's which depicts a medical school professor using a cadaver to demonstrate a tendon's function. In the Netherlands at the time cadaver dissection was still heavily restricted but they were permitted one a year as long as the body was an executed criminal. Even earlier in the 1500s in Netherlands, Andreas Vesalius, the founder of modern anatomy, was writing about how to properly perform dissections and providing illustrations of human anatomy to medical students. He wasn't at all hiding what he was doing (except maybe downplaying how often he was doing dissections) and was well respected by many. The earliest European Medical Universities began in Italy and they sometimes received a cadaver right before a class would graduate, a criminal that was "on hold" for them all year so they could do a final anatomy study with a fresh corpse. It was also considered a noble sacrifice (literally in the sense that it seems only nobility did this) during the renaissance in Italy for someone to request an autopsy once they died in the hopes of furthering understanding of a chronic or terminal condition, especially if their family had it too. For when/where cadaver dissection wasn't allowed or secretly practiced, people relied on ancient/foreign anatomy writings (usually Greek or Arabic) or dissected similar animals such as dogs/monkeys, or both in the case of Galen who was an ancient greek that wrote about dissected monkeys. This led to some major errors in peoples understanding of human anatomy before cadaver dissection became more tolerated.

If these were murder victims, even that many victims would show signs. If they were cadavers for study an archeologist should tell ya. I found your study of this subject very well researched. Hope you study often.

My great grandfather was a pediatrician/ general rural doctor that travelled using horse and carriage in the 1920’s. He wrote a few medical textbooks. When he died his wife was suffering from Alzheimer’s. She took all these bones that he had or was constructing into a skeleton for medical study display and buried them in the yard. When the construction crews were demolishing his small mansion property they discovered so many bones that they contacted the police who contacted my family who then told the police the story you just read.

The founding fathers are portrayed only as smugglers and slave owners and people take statues down for less reason than that. With the power of cancel culture today all that needs to be done is to increasingly maintain a polarized population that thinks it has some kind of control over the past. Ie, slavery, and other strategies to get people to discredit the constitution if they disparage the authors enough. If he’s bad enough, even if he only did or said one bad thing in the midst of an exemplary life the response is to cancel him and everything he did. It’s a dangerous precedent to throw the baby out with the bath water.

@@judymcgaugh6480 LOL -- I wasn't really being all that serious with my suggestion, but the thought amused me. It might make for a fun Alternative History novel, like that ABRAHAM LINCOLN, VAMPIRE HUNTER novel that got made into a movie. BEN FRANKLIN, RE-ANIMATOR . . . set in London, where his house had the bodies buried . . . and maybe one or two of 'em crawled out and terrorized the area, so much so that Ben felt the need to leave Britain altogether & go to America . . . it could make for a goofy, silly What If? story in the horror genre, inspiring Mary Shelley and all that.
I've got too much on my plate, but if there's anybody else out there who digs the idea, please feel free to go and run with it, by all means. Just mention where you got the idea, giving me the credit for it, and if you can get it published, maybe come back here and ask for my contact information (home address) so you can send me a free copy, and you can keep all the money, since you're the one who actually wrote the novel. Sound fair? I'd get a kick out of reading such a novel, and it would be satisfaction enough knowing my idea led to it being written.

I like how the whole “medical research” in a windowless pit under someone’s garden is presented as fact! Then add on top of that they claim the guy whose house it was had no idea what was going on and at best he possibly went down there once or twice to see what was going on, in, “The Pit”. Comedy!

He probably did know what was happening but due to the fact study of human anatomy at the time was insanely frowned on during this time they kept it quiet. They were living in an EXTREMELY religious time for American and telling people you were studying and cutting into human remains was probably not a smart thing to say and so was kept out of his social circles and conversations.

I lean towards him being interested in medical research. Things like this were considered cool yet borderline criminal at the time.
Remember that using even things like anesthesia was considered illicit, illegal, or immoral. The guy who invented treatment for correcting women's bladders wasn't allowed to use anesthesia for black slaves who needed bladder correction surgery so he had to do it while they were fully conscious. They were in excruciating pain. He is now incorrectly and unjustly branded as a racist psychopathic quack that experimented on and tortured blacks and they even removed his statues that served as commemoration of his advancements in surgery. This is even though it was the Church that caused these women's pain.
So... I'll give Ben the benefit of the doubt.

Makes sense though. If it was illegal to do, you would do it in a windowless basement. The smell must have been horrible.

It was presented as the most likely explanation. Do you really believe the building owner would publicly discuss an illegal practice? You people are ridiculous. No shit they had no windows, the practice was illegal!

Keep in mind, they also found King Richard III in a London parking lot, so we know the Brits weren’t too particular on where they buried their dead.

Check his podcasts out man they’re so entertaining regardless of you take it serious, you’ll learn something every time. Tin Foil Hat and Broken Simulation. I’ve listened to both since right before the scamdemic and they’ve been on point about most everything.
