- MAN GIVES UP EVERYTHING
In 2015, aged 47 an English businessman gave up everything and travelled Asia to find true happiness. Now a Buddhist Monk, living a simple life in Thailand, India and Sri Lanka, he shares the continuing story.

Hey mate! I just want to say that I currently do some new practices, I am trying it out. It is a chore at this point. I have zero attainment from it, currently. Thats a cool thing, it takes me back to those days where I had nothing but hope. Feels good.

I believe Jesus understood the jhānas only to well, and with this understanding caused people to assume he had heavenly powers as these were witnessed by people. I don't for one minute believe Jesus had the type of Ego to say he was the sun of God, (spelling mistake intentional) people themselves probably assumed this when he did certain things that to them looked totally supernatural.
Jesus and his lost years, I'm totally convinced were spent in a Buddhist Monastery!
Everyone will believe what they like(or have been taught to like), as long as it stops killing (and killing of every loving thing on the planet) harm, greed, selfishness, entitlement which all come under the umbellar of your 5 rules.

What do you think about meditation retreats
Thank you for watching and your comments. I will talk about this in a Q&A's video coming soon.

How does an Arahant come back to samsara to become a Buddha? I thought an Arahant is one who has ended their cycle of rebirth.
Thank you for watching and your comments. I will talk about this in a Q&A's video coming soon.

Ok bhante, classic example is if a person comes for refuge to your house and an angry mob questions you about his whereabouts, you know his life is in danger, and even if you keep silent, which you suggested, the mob might become suspicious and figure out you're hiding him.. should you lie or tell the truth ?
I have not been to such a situation off course but there are plenty of less extreme versions of such cases where it's very much is a grey area, I agree with your answer though that if you are "pure of heart" so to say, you'll know what to do in the moment.. 🙏🙏

The problem with these philosophical thought exercises is that they distract us from the essence. 99.9999% of the time it is best to follow the precepts and not to think that everything is grey. When you ever come in a life or death kind of situation you will hopefully be kind, mindful, wise, and unattached (even to the teachings of the Buddha, they are a raft to reach enlightenment, not a goal in and of itself). This is in no way an excuse to pick and choose. Always follow the Precepts. And if there is one event in your life where an exception is acceptable you will know what to do out of wisdom and kindness.
OK Bhante I will ask the question again and more clearly - (you do request we do not write long questions yet many times we just need to as you sometimes need them to understand us) as it appears you did not take my question seriously enough even though this recording is titled so -
Bhante, I don't steal, nor kill on purpose, no sexual misconduct on any level, no lies except to myself i believe and no alcohol or drugs or anything of the sort, yet why am I not at peace?
* I want to make it very clear that 'LYING TO MYSELF' pertains to the conditioned mind. The 'world',
The propensity to listen to the conditioned mind as it ensures the safety and predictability we are seeking through attachment to outcome etc, it is Karmic and we find ourselves back in a Karmic loop because we listened to the conditioned mind. I can sit and see the conditioning yet there I am again proliferating or speaking harshly etc - believing the messages through the senses (for example my back hurts and I could be crippled) Its at this point every one of us who is not an Arahant, free from the Hindrances and Fetters will do the same, which is why we practice, I believe.
I want to know how to find peace while keeping the precepts and knowing the conditioned mind is interfering in the precept-keeping via sense impressions of thoughts or Vedana/sensations like fear etc in the body. Obviously I desire to not listen to the conditioning - hence the question... Nama Rupa - thank you.
With Metta I share this -
The "world" of which the Buddha speaks is comprised in this aggregate of body-and-mind. For it is only by the activity of our physical and mental sense faculties that a world can be experienced and known at all. The sights, sounds, smells, tastes and bodily impressions which we perceive, and our various mental functions, conscious and unconscious - this is the world in which we live. And this world of ours has its origin in that very aggregate of physical and mental processes that produces the kammic act of craving for the six physical and mental sense objects.
"If, Ananda, there were no kamma ripening in the sphere of the senses, would there appear any sense-sphere existence?" - "Surely, not Lord."
- AN 3.76
I want to add that because of your help over the year, for months on end struggling, I DID manage to get off facebook, if you recall I was trapped in the loop there and was struggling to let go, and I asked a few times for help in understanding why I kept retuning when I was fully aware of all the negatives regardless of my being focused on NOT going back, but something kept happening and I was returning, thanks to you I was able to really investigate deeper and find the 'desire' and I was able to let go. So I ask this question about the Precepts and the conditioned mind again with humbleness as it very seriously is an issue. Thank you Bhante
Your conditioned mind will be at peace when you have reconditioned it. This is the practice. Sukhi Hontu
I will talk about this more on Wednesday. Sukhi Hontu
In relation to the lie question, it originates from Kant's ethics; he also believed that telling lies was inherently wrong and he gave a hypothetical responding to the very question given.
Imagine an axe murderer who is searching for your friend who then asks you where your friend is.
Let's say you are aware of where your friend resides at the current moment, would it then be morally permissible to lie to the axe murderer?
Kant still says no because you are not responsible for the axe murderers actions and your particular involvement (lie) could lead to something unintended.
If we move this to a more modern example, let's say you have a best friend named Cathy. She dated this crazy guy and broke up with him. Cathy decides to call you and tell you she's gotten a lot of weird texts from the guy and for her safety she moved in with her Aunt who lives a few states away (let's just say it's America).
Cathy's ex-boyfriend calls you and asks if you know where shes staying at currently. Do you lie or tell him the truth?
