One dumb detail I enjoy about the name "GT", and I don't know if it's intentional or not, is that G and T are the 7th and 20th letters of the alphabet, totalling 27, while Z is the 26th. So GT is "one after that".
"The Baby Arc" makes sense to me just as much as having a single Cell Arc does, the "Hunt for the Black Star Dragon Balls Arc" wouldn't have an ending. It just smoothly transitions into the Baby stuff on Earth.
@@veryangryboi4128 I thought the stuff that happened on planet M2 with the machine mutants was interesting. However before that point, yeah a lot of the foes and encounters fell flat for me.
I'm sad there's no dan dan kokoro hikareteku. But glad we're finally starting GT and cool to see all the research ya did. Can't wait for December. :3 Also it's fine to call this the Baby Arch. Guess it makes sense.
As much as I love GT for being my true gateway into the wonderful world of J-pop, having Field of View, DEEN, ZARD, Shizuka Kudo, and WANDS would totally guarantee copyright all over this. I was hoping he'd switch out Field of View's DAN DAN Kokomo Hikarete'ku with ZARD's, but alas...
It’s here. This was so much more in-depth than I thought. Going into fan’s obsession with canon and with the knee-jerk reaction for people to take GT without Toriyama to be insulting towards him being kind of unfair (even moreso if you read pretty much any statement Toriyama has made about GT).
“Gt isn’t canon!” They say. “Only one canon and it’s dbs” they say. Bullshit, we got two dbs canons and meet beerus 3 times already. GT is canon to the DBZ anime just like dbs anime is to Kai and dbs manga is manga canon. “This isn’t canon” is gatekeepy bullshit. Even if something isn’t canon it can still be good anyways.
@@Videospiel-Man5730 He didn't like GT. It's a market strategy of course. Obviously he can't say that he dislikes a product with his name attached to it because then it won't make him as much money.
I wish GT went all the way with the new young cast. Pan as the main character, with Uub, Trunks, and the robot as a supporting cast. Even introduce a new alien cast member or two. Same concept, they go to space to find the black star balls to save Goku. It might have been suicide for the ratings, but it would have been cool to see something totally fresh.
Throw Goten in there too, it's a shame we didn't get much of him and Trunks together as adults. I also wish we got more Marron and Bra. I know they're not fighters, but still... those two got almost no screentime whatsoever in Z or GT, and for the love of god, anything is better than Bra in Dragon Ball Multiverse lmao
I really wish gt and super went full on with the new generations like what toriyama wanted to do with Gohan and Goten/Trunks before he was forced to bring goku back.Making Goku a kid was pointless to the plot other than bringing the series back to og db days.
@History and Reviews And that invalidates his comment how? Super still did almost nothing with Goten and Trunks, and what little it did with Gohan was... disappointing to put it lightly... but DURING and throughout the Artificial Humans and Majin Boo arcs of Z, it was clear that Gokū was intent on having Gohan, Goten, and Trunks to be the protectors of Earth in his stead after he died, and unfortunately Toriyama, due to fan backlash at the time, ended up bringing Gokū back to life as the main hero at the end. So Justin saying that he wished Super had done more with that instead of being mainly The Gokū Show and almost completely sidelining everyone else is a totally valid criticism, because while yes, Super DOES take place during the ten year timeskip before the end of the original series, the setup for Gokū wanting to pass the torch happened YEARS before that. Keep in mind that the Majin Boo arc was four years before the start of Super, and the Artificial Humans arc was a whole seven more before that.
@@TheBigBlueBugofJustice Super is absolutely pointless and contradicts the end of Z. 10 years after Kid Buu, Gohan is a scrawny dweeb that needs a ladder to reach the top of the book shelf. Bulma said it hasd been 5 years since anyone saw Goku yet Super Hero Goku and Vegeta are seen together and that film takes place a year BEFORE end of Z
This doesn't need a musical intro anyway, the DBGT theme has been living rent free in my head for almost 16 years now, and i didnt even watch the show that much.. but that theme, and the blue water cover, absolute bop. I've commented this before even getting 2 mins in, but it doesn't matter, this series is going to be such a fun watch. Godspeed MistareFusion, i salute thee
I think MistareFusion is going to be a lot more positive towards GT than we would expect. Especially the earlier adventure arcs. A lot of hate for GT comes down to it being different, Goku being turned into a child, the stakes being lower, etc. I don't think Lance will be bothered by the typical problems most people have with GT until we get to the later arcs.
My guess is, he will enjoy the Black Star Dragon Ball arc (which is funny since that is the arc most americans absolutely hate) and maybe a bit of the Baby Arc, but the rest he will dislike very strongly.
@@MinhLe19303 I watched the japanese dub twice. It doesn't change much aside from not skipping the first 15 or so episodes. Which tbf are the best part of GT (except episode 10, nothing against the Parapara brothers, but the episode clearly had a low animation budget and it shows).
Definitely seems so. I imagine he'll upset a lot of Western DB "fans" by being at least somewhat positive on the Para Para Brothers, who seem to be, in my experience, pretty much universally HATED by Western "fans", despite the fact that the Brothers are quite possibly the closest thing GT ever does to matching how beautifully and hilariously nonsensical, irreverent, and goofy the early parts of Dragon Ball were. And that's saying something, since the early parts of GT do go to great lengths to mimic that early DB tone and style, which I personally love. It's so sad that the early parts of GT go so under/unappreciated by Western DB fandom, but I guess it makes sense since most of the early parts of Dragon Ball are similarly very underappreciated in the US in favor of the ridiculously overrated Z portion. Dragon Ball gets seen in America way too much solely for it's mindless, repetitive, overly bombastic action and overblown stakes and not enough for its charming characters, setting, and humor. In other words, DB and DBGT SERIOUSLY deserve WAY more love here in America.
A single baby arc makes sense. Especially since Baby himself is somewhat of a half way house between a that more tricky and "can't be solved purely by punching" enemy and the "here comes an even stronger guy" type enemy.
Baby ties back all the way until Lord Luud which is halfway through the "search for the dragon balls in space" arc, and we spent a lot of time in Giru's planet and building up to Giru's mystery before that, all of which ties to Dr. Myuu and to Baby by extension.
SSJ4 is one of if not the BEST transformations in the series imo! It takes what makes a Saiyan a Saiyan in the Super Saiyan and Oozaru aspects and brings them to a fascinating merger....MOAR worldbuilding and such please??
Yeah but It is also a contradiction, the biggest weakness of the Saiyans was the tail and the ozaru form, that's why when Goku and the others surpassed the strength of the Saiyans the tail disappeared,
Wow, I never knew that one of their initial ideas for GT was for it to take place during the 10 year gap. But they decided that it would take place after the 10 year gap, because if they did it would be disrespectful for falling into their own timeline separate from the original series. And it would have given the impression that the series would be dragged out. It’s stuff like this that gives me admiration for GT, And I rather like how rather than creating the next big strong guy, or having a lot of the old cast of characters doing absolutely nothing. It’s instead focused on a smaller cast and doing things that aren't just punching a guy really hard, even though it eventually becomes that. So yeah I can’t wait to see more Dissection on GT.
Also if it’s before uub it gives everyone plot armour and kills tension. I love both versions of dbs but I know for a fact nobody’s in any real danger.
Throwing Goku's newly minted protégé straight in the trash has always struck me as a questionable choice, but maybe the Toei writers felt that reverting Goku to a child negated any master-student dynamic.
Honestly this was a phenomenal break down of GT. You did a great job here, and I'm glad you didn't just write it off like many fans for many of the reasons you addressed. You really dug into the mind of the creators which I think is critical to contextualize GT.
Super is weird, because it feels kind of lacking in direction. I don't really get the point beyond just "Bigger numbers, more transformations.", because there's not really any story beyond getting god powers. GT meanders for a bit, but it did seem like it had some ideas it wanted to get out there with the Baby and Shadow Dragon arcs.
@@pn2294 I won't deny that GT feels derivative, don't get me wrong. But it did seem like those were the two arcs that had the most thought put into them to tell a story that wasn't just strictly "And then Goku got stronger" or something.
So glad you showed such appreciation for GT's premise. Regardless of how it turned out, I respect the hell out of them for coming up with an idea that completely shakes things up and does something new. I remember first hearing about GT and thinking the idea of bringing back the adventure but pushing it to a universal scale was genius. Excited to see your thoughts on the series, I have plenty of hard problems with every arc, even the Baby Arc which I actually kinda like(Maybe even more than Cell and Buu) and it'll be interesting to see someone who has such history with, compassion for and knowledge of Dragon Ball share their thoughts. I am in the camp of "Good ideas, bad execution"... but I do think it at least does some of it's ideas fairly well and I certainly prefer it to Super's "Boring ideas, poor and boring execution".
@@tylerleach8796 Not all of Supers filler episodes are, some of them are just as bad as the worst of GT or even worse than that(Jelly Vegeta) but ya, it has some nice ones, nothing amazing but passable lil stories about the lives of the characters and that's definitely better than most of GT.
I was wondering if we were gonna group the Black Star Dragon Balls Arc and the Baby Arc together- even though most sources leave then separate (sort of like the Android Arc and Cell Arc), I think it’s smarter to combine them this way
@@Videospiel-Man5730 To a degree. But: an arc starts off on a flat line, arcs upward, then arcs back down to the flat line. In other words, a conflict is introduced, and then things happen until said conflict is resolved. So what is the conflict in the Baby arc? Well, Pilaf wishes on the Black Star Dragon Balls for Gokū to physically become twelve years old again. Problem is, wishing on that particular set of Dragon Balls means that the Earth will explode if the Balls are not found and reunited within the span of a year. Complicating matters is the fact that this set of Dragon Balls scatter across the entire universe rather than the planet where the wish was made, so the characters must therefore set out into the depths of outer space to gather them all. During this vast quest, they eventually encounter a robot army led by a certain Doctor Myū, who they discover is a remnant of the otherwise extinct race of Tsufurians, the species that once coexisted with the Saiyans on Planet Vegeta before the violent uprising of the Saiyans. Myū has created a bioorganic superbeing (yeah, I know... a tad derivative, but when did that stop Dragon Ball before?) known as Baby. The heroes eventually (seemingly) defeat Baby and continue on their merry way to find the rest of the Balls. However, Baby survived and makes his way to Earth, where he methodically infects and takes over the bodies of its inhabitants. Flashing forward a little while later, Gokū, Trunks, and Pan have finally gathered all seven Black Star Dragon Balls. Yay! They head back to Earth, only to find out that everyone (except Mr. Satan, Mr. Boo, and a small handful of others) are now controlled by Baby. Baby commandeers the Black Star Dragon Balls and wishes to create a new Tsufuru planet, rendering the heroes' quest in vain and the destruction of Earth certain. They obviously must defeat first Baby, which they do, but then must evacuate the now-freed population of Earth to the new Tsufurian planet before it explodes. They do, it does, Piccolo sacrifices himself in the explosion to prevent the Black Star Balls from being ever being used again, and they then use Earth's Dragon Balls (still functional since Dende is still alive) to restore Earth, and peace is, for a while, once again restored. Thing is, you can't split the first 40 episodes into Funimation's 1-16 and 17-40 numbering and call it an arc, because the thing that the characters set out to do in the first place was not done. The conflict that was introduced in the beginning was not resolved by episode 16, that doesn't happen until episode 40. THAT is an arc. Funimation's "sagas", whether in Dragon Ball, Z, or GT, are and always were arbitrary bullshit that divided complete story arcs into weird, nonsensical chunks. Dragon Ball does not have nine story arcs, Z does not have sixteen, and GT does not have four. MistareFusion is the only DB personality I've seen that divides them in a way that makes sense and fits the actual definition of what an arc is. Hell, even the fine folks over at Kanzenshuu, who I am very fond of, split both the Artificial Humans and the Baby arc in two, which, as I just laid out, just doesn't make sense for a whole host of reasons.
I used to believe this too, but nowadays the first episodes seem too distinct to me to just lump them in with the Baby stuff. But I can see why Lance would decide to group them up like that, since there's no perfect cut-off point between the two. Still, I think it would be interesting to hear how Lance would rank the pre-Baby episodes compared to everything else in GT.
@@TheBigBlueBugofJustice You could argue that the main conflict of the first arc is stopping Dr Myuu and General RIldo and use their defeats as a cut-off point. This would mean Baby's first appearance is technically not in his own arc, but I think that can work as a cliffhanger. Of course, that would also render most of the arc a pretty minor throwaway adventure without any real consequences, but I think that distinction at least makes some sense.
@olserknam But again, that's not an arc. The goal of the story, gather the Black Star Dragon Balls and stop the destruction of Earth, was still absolutely in progress at that point. Myū, Rildo, and Baby were complications added to that, but their arrival certainly didn't begin a brand new story arc, especially since even before their introduction you had the stuff with Luud, Muchi, and Dolltaki, which was all directly connected to Myū. And Baby was created by Myū, so after his defeat, his creation was still out there. Did the Majin Boo arc end and a new arc begin once Bobbidi was slain? (I guess that depends on who you ask, since Funimation had their "Fusion Saga" bullshit... but no. No it didn't.)
GT is such an interesting work to consider in comparison to Toriyama's Dragonball, especially the Z era. In a lot of ways, GT is more coherent in the big-picture stuff than any part of Dragonball except maybe the Saiyin/Freeza connection. Baby is a culmination of and conclusion to the story of the Saiyins. The Super Android 17 arc is a culmination of all the villains. And then finally the Shadow Dragons are a culmination of everything to do with the title objects. I'm reminded of your review of the (1st) Broly movie in a lot of ways - there's a lot to love here on paper. I think this stuff is why the final episode is ultimately so well-loved, despite the derision heaped on the rest of the series. Unlike the original Dragonball, which doesn't just fall off a cliff at the end of the Buu arc but also doesn't quite stick the landing, GT works very hard to be an endpoint for the series. All that said ... in the details, GT falls down quite a lot. It is astoundingly unmemorable outside of that final episode. Even in its weakest periods, Dragonball produced scenes - events - that stuck with me, and that stick with fans generally. Tien's desparate stand against Cell. Majin Buu's rage at the robbers, and Super Buu's terror when Goku and Vegeta are about to remove Majin Buu from him. GT, though ... I remember almost nothing. There's that initial scene with Pilaf where Goku gets turned into a kid, and some vague promo-type images of Trunks, Pan, SSJ4 Goku, and Baby Vegeta, but even though I know I watched a fair portion of it, there are very few events that stick out in my memory. Maybe that's bias because the fandom is around reinforcing my childhood memories of Dragonball Z in a way that it isn't for GT, but I don't know. I don't tend to hear much about, say, Super Buu begging for Vegeta to leave without taking Majin Buu out of him, but that line has still been living rent-free in my head for about 20 years. There's nothing like that for GT.
Gt is good at what it does but it doesn't leave much impact as db and z due to the writers not having source material to work on, I do like how the show goes full circle with the franchise at that point with baby, the shadow dragons and adventure story's,it's overall a satisfying close off the series than buus end even if gts execution wasn't great.
I am so flipping excited! And I didn't even think about the fact that this'll line up with DBD December! Congrats on a decade of dissection. This series has not only provided me with entertainment, but expanded my enjoyment of one of my favorite series, and encouraged me to not only have a more nuanced view of media, but enjoy more media for what it is, appreciate the time frame things were from and what they accomplished, and push beyond my ideas and expectations and appreciate other perspectives
I'm just waiting for Lance to give his thoughts on the Para Para Brothers. The Baby Arc has a handful of resused assets like the nature of Ledgic being a Hit/Paikuhan type character that may or may not have done better, Ledgic doesn't even return or get his rematch so...take of that what you will. Also the disturbing nature of Dolltaki and Luud haha. This is going to be a ride. Atleast Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chiaotzu don't get crapped on...because they are only in this show for 30 seconds.
Super cool, and never thought I’d see the day where DBD reached GT. Shame that copyrights prevent a really cool Dan Dan Kokoro intro but that’s the breaks I guess.
Hype for this video 🙌 while I completely understand not doing musical intros anymore, your intro to the Buu arc in particular using We Gotta Power got me into classic Dragon Ball Music!
I’m glad that your taking on discussing Dragonball GT. I’m looking forward to you discussing the Black Star Dragonball Arc, Baby Arc, Super 17 Arc, Shadow Dragons Arc and the Hero’s Legacy!
Oh, I entirely agree that the Baby Arc is a single arc! I've always considered it very strange that everyone splits the arc in half, but it's probably for the same weird marketing reason that the arcs in Z got split up.
Funimation did that the worst. They called the Sayain arc the Vegeta arc. I guess that works. However a Trunks' arc,Android arc,Imperfect Cell,Perfect Cell, the Cell Games was monumentally stupid.
@@spartanq7781 Same deal with the Red Ribbon Army saga, the Buu Saga, the Freeza saga... honestly the way they split up arcs sometimes, especially during Z, is idiotic.
@@spartanq7781 I never got that at all, frieza arc was split into namek, Ginyu and Frieza arcs even though Ginyu is a small part of the story, imperfect cell and perfect arcs being split makes no sense, not to mention Majin Vegeta part of the buu arc being called the babidi arc even though babidi isn't an important villain compared to buu himself, I think Funimation did that for 26 episode seasons and stretched it out.
You really have a knack for publicly releasing milestone videos when a hurricane is coming 😅 As for GT, I overall like it as the issues I had with Z are ones fans enjoy so we're still stuck with...25 years later that GT sadly did succumb to as you said. Still it has my favorite Vegeta (Papa!), SS form, music, concepts, art even, I just think its neat! I give it more leeway than DBS as it had far less time for its good ideas to make full sense but given the fever dream that is SDBH and Freeza on his...4th? return maybe the fanbase doesn't actually want sense they just want cool punchy punchy which GT did fail at. So hope I'll be able to weather another financial hardship from the storm and get to enjoy DBD December on GT from someone whose critique isn't just "BUT CANON!!!"
Very interested to see your thoughts on this series. Given your different attitude towards some material I feel it will be interesting to see your thoughts as well as an in depth review of GT on your end. Also glad to hear the 10th anniversary movie is gonna be in the batch with them in December. It's honestly one I haven't watched to much besides for the beautiful color work so I am interested to hear your thoughts.
Aya Matsui starts out as the series composer (head writer) but once Baby is introduced, it seems Atsushi Maekawa takes over the role despite her still being credited throughout the series.
It’s really interesting to observe that GT tried to do so much for the fans and, at a glance, has a lot to offer, yet it “crashed and burned”, as you say. It’s hard to pin down exactly why more Trunks, Goku becoming a kid again, new transformations, a return of Cell AND Frieza, a voyage through space and having the dragons as villains, doesn’t work.
Because it wasn’t Future Trunks and transformations (from Super onward which yes, super is BEFORE z ends) are garbage. Super Saiyan 4 is great Repeatedly bring dead villains back is not. It lessens the impact of their “death “
The main reason it didn't work was because the writing staff at Toei had no idea how many episodes they were going to get to work with... and because of that they had little direction in the beginning and ending arcs... stuff just happened for the most part or the arc was sped up prematurely like in the Super 17 and shadow dragon arcs... that's why the best part of GT is the baby arc halfway through the series
Shoot, I meant to finish my rewatch of GT before you started this. Guess I better start clearing my backlog. The best thing about GT is definitely its abundant inclusion of Pan-chan. However, DBS Super Hero also abundantly features Pan-chan, so I feel GT's position has become somewhat redundant now. Good opening theme, though.
my first dbgt expiereince was weird cause they cutted dbgt hard in germany i always thought i missed some episodes but they cutted out entire episodes and even skipped fights
For me when it cones to "What's Canon" and what isn't, I look at Dragon Ball having multiple timeliness of continuity. The Manga is the Prime Timeline, with both Anime adaptations as more of an Alternate Timeline of continuity, with GT, the Movies and Specials, and Super all branching off of the Anime's continuity. Each Movie takes place in their own self contained timeliness, along with the Super Manga and Anime branching off the Z Anime, bur existing in their own Alternate Timeliness where it's established logic has always existed. But that's just me. Love the new logo.
Franchises can have more then one canon. Look at super it has manga and anime canon. They’re the second and third time we meet beerus Gt is canon and so are both dbs versions, they’re just seperate canons.
Well, "timelines" might not be the best word, as a timeline in Dragon Ball would be something like Future Trunks' timeline. It's better to say that they all live in different canons, the toei anime is canon to GT's story and the movies, some of the movies are also canon to GT, such as the first Cooler movie. The Super Anime and Manga are in different canons, but both follow the manga canon and not the anime, GT or the Movies prior to Super. The original 42 volumes of the manga are the main canon that Toriyama as the creator aknowledges. While the anime, movies and GT are "gaiden" stories.
@@JackOfen the dbs anime uses filler like me satans henchmen and Gregory that wasn’t in the manga. It only uses Kai filler and not stuff only in z so it’s clear it’s meant to be a Kai continuity thing
I am GENUINELY Sooooo excited I LOVE dragon ball gt. I know it’s an underrated opinion but I genuinely enjoy it and think it’s a good show. But even more so I LOVE DRAGON BALL DISSECTION!!!! And hearing that it’s almost dbdecember brings a GENUINE smile to my face
Great video as always, and I'm really glad you're covering GT. I wanna say off the bat that SSJ4 Goku is one of my favorite designs in the entire Dragonball universe.
GT's concept is pretty brilliant in the way it was meant to deal with the series' escalation problem, which peaked at the Buu Arc, and they did a fine job with it for the first half of the first arc or so, but then they hit the issue that, despite fanbases often claiming they want something new and fresh in their franchises, the most minor deviation from formula is received with rabid rancour, and they overcorrected into the all the same crap that had plagued the Z portion of Dragon Ball, to the point they even copied the antagonist pattern of the Z Arcs (Alien, Artificial Human, Mythic Beings). A breath of fresh air that became the the same stale, sweaty and stinky room Dragon Ball had been shut into.
Black Star and Baby being two separate arcs never made sense to me when I watched it for the first time. Black Star doesn't really have a proper ending. It long transitioned into the Baby arc by the time everyone returns home. Everyone coming home means nothing because Baby took over Earth and it's inhabitants. The only way you could argue they're two separate arcs if you considered them concurrent arcs, like how comics and other shows have two separate storylines going on at the same time. The fans I imagine aren't arguing this. Most fans get their ideas from Funimation's VHS/DVD marketing and not airing the first 16 episodes, opting for a English-only recap episode - "A Grand Problem".
It is 2 different arcs because dragon ball have this weird thing of a full story being 2 arcs, Saiyan Arc and Frieza Arc are the 2 arcs of 1 Saga, the Frieza Saga, The Androids Arc and The Cell Arc, are the 2 arcs of the Cell Saga, Majin Boo Saga was just one big thing, so it didn't follow the pattern, but Dragon Ball GT followed it again, with the Black Star Arc and The Baby Arc, being the 2 arcs that makes the Baby Saga.
I agree gt coulda implemented some better executions, but what dragonball arc ISNT like that? It’s not like piccolo ever saved the day before. GT was mainly about goku but let’s not pretend people like yamcha and tien were any better off in Z. If you’re not goku or gohan you’re just there to stall and hype up the villain until goku saves the day. Only accept is the garlic jr saga. The rest….yeah super buu was just kinda fluff. Gotenks, gohan. All did nothing….
@@fridaynightnicktoons6885 Gohan is even more useless in GT though than in Z, and pretty much does nothing besides get possessed by Baby and be a rechargeable battery for SS4 Goku. So really, Goku is the only player who matters even moreso here (except Vegeta's reasonable role in the last arc and 18's assist kill on Super 17). Piccolo does nothing but die, Goten does basically the same amount as Gohan, Trunks had promise but ends up in the same role as Gohan/Goten...you get the picture. Yeah, they didn't do much in Z either, specifically in the Boo Arc when Goku steals the rug out from under everyone, though side characters tended to do a little more even in the Boo Arc than they do in GT. (And this is coming from someone who likes GT). Also Piccolo did save the day against Raditz, but that was back in the Saiyan arc when other characters were actually involved besides just Goku lol.
The beginning is certainly more imaginative than Super, but afterwards it's really, really derivative. Super 17 is pretty much fanfiction and the Dragons arc is chock full of recycled DBZ tropes.
Honestly the end of the musical openings is quite unfortunate. Drargon Ball GT the OG Japanese has an amazing opening. And I always loved that touch in DBD
6:01 remember that Simpsons episode when Bart is hanging around the comic book store, then he grabs a DC comic and the cover shows Superman moving home to Gotham, Comic Book Guy is quick to point out that it's an alternate world story and "it didn't really happen" then Bart responds "What are you talking about? none of this has really happened"
Hell they still doing it today Super is a prime example of that and that's more like everybody missing Dragon Ball so much that they ignore all the flaws that comes with super because honestly super is now a kid show and nothing but oh let's change the color hair of these characters and let's ignore our continuity lol
i personally love GT as it actually moved character arcs forward unlike super and i LOVE the shadow dragon saga i love that the heros are punished for abusing the dragon balls which is a thing elder kai warned about in the buu saga
As Grand Archpriest of the Recommending Numbers, I will inform you that MistareFusion is covering Dragon Ball GT. (Yes, I was planning to make this comment on the next MistareFusion video, no matter the content.)
The line you say about people being obsessed with a show being canon is so true. By that logic why talk about the Dragonball movies, well the movies are entertainment. Same with Sailor Moon. Technically most of the anime content we love, like Nephrite turning good and saving Naru is non canon, because those storylines never happened in the manga. Everyone should enjoy content their own way!
I just wanna say I love the main casts designs. Pan is well designed and Trunks can rock most outfits anyways. Only Goku is a bit dry but that fits his personality.
I am glad you are still making content. I have enjoyed all your previous videos. Looking forward to watching more, GT may have flaws like any other series but it also has it's pros. Thanks again, it's always good seeing a different perspective.
Recently got into modding mechanical keyboards and started watching these again after waiting a while for the Buu arc to end to marathon some. These videos are such a great companion to listen to while tinkering away~ Always looking forward to DBD December! 😊
Hmm, in a way i kind of see the Baby Arc spanning from episode 1 to it's end making more sense than the usual divide, but i always thought it was an official division of the stories.
For me, the problem with GT was always that it was “Goku Time”. Pan, Trunks & the other characters are pushed to the sidelines in favour of Goku, & especially by the Baby arc, the series started to become a weaker retread of Z, with Goku just beating up bland, uninspired villains such as Super Android 17 & Omega Shenron. It really disappointed me, especially since how so many characters in Z were already tossed aside & sidelined. I mean, Piccolo is killed like a punk & as he was my favourite, I was NOT happy.
Similar to the buu saga, it kinda hit its stride the more it deviated from typical dragonball fair Its part of why a lot of the best arc is the baby arc to most people. But the best parts of the arc overall was the actual setups to it rather than the arc Most people could probably admit to the arc taking a bit of a dive after it transitions into typical dragonball fare after he infects vegeta But even then, the fact that it stayed true to its themes of baby becoming exactly what he hated and feared the most in his last moments was still enough to leave it as a highlight in such a drag of missed potential
That’s fair but tbh z was the exact same way. Name one thing anyone did in z besides goku and besides gohans 2 big wins on garlic and cell. One thing they did that wasn’t just stalling until goku saves the day at the end. You can’t. Piccolo literally gives up his individuality TWICE only for it to be stalling until goku saves the day. Gohan did on cell but only because goku held his hand the whole time. Nobody but goku could save the day. Tien, yamcha, piccolo, gotenks, ect, all basically fluff until the conflict is resolved by goku.
@@theradionicrevival8068 not just buu but all of z. Only thing in all of DBZ that was “everyone is basically stalling til goku saves the day” was garlic jr and that’s it. Gohan beat cell, but the whole cell/androids but was just waiting around til goku saves the day, even if it was through his son. Gohan wouldn’t have won without goku. Piccolo save the day? Tien? Nope. Just stalling. That’s what mystic gohan and gotenks amounted to. Android 16,everything. DBZ is formulated as hell. Fun,but yeah it’s got flaws. It started with king piccolo.
I've been watching DBD since the 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai arc. (!) I remember you getting to Muscle Tower and thinking "wow, look how much ground we've covered." And here we are. Dragon Ball (Z) is behind us, and GT lay ahead. This transition has been oddly emotional and I can't put my finger on why, yknow? I've personally never even watched GT so my own experience with this series is going to be very different. Thank you for all you've done, Lance, and I'm so very excited to continue on into this new territory.
Probably! But it's sort of like the difference between calling the very first arc "The Hunt For the Dragon Balls" versus "The Emperor Pilaf Arc". Or calling the penultimate arc "The Cell Arc" versus "The Androids Arc" (which frankly is more accurate of a name, since it starts with Android Freeza, has two sets of Androids in the middle, and ends with the artificial lifeform Cell). Neither approach is technically wrong, it's just a choice between naming the arc after an overall concept or direction versus naming it after the final big bad.
Dragonball GT had so much potential to work with the best of early and late Z era DB to make something unique. The Grand Tour space theme is nothing short of genius and the only parts of GT I actually remember besides SS4.
the beginning of a new era with a new logo and no more opening music. Bit of a shame since those bits in the openings from early dragonball is what got me to watch it in the first place but I am happy you have to deal with less pain. Very much looking forward to the part of the series I know next to nothing of.
I think that the defenses of kami's lookout are offline because goku never removed the power pole from korin's tower thus leaving the lookout tethered to the mortal plane.
Was GT a respectful sequel and follow up to the Dragon Ball franchise that respected what came before that didn't retcon or ignore his own Canon just the sake of selling merchandise GT was 64 episodes of a straight story plot no filler they knew that they couldn't have a overpowered Goku at the time and they really wanted to get back to the fun of what Dragon Ball was about you know the actual Dragon balls that a lot of people tend to forget the show is called Dragon Ball and yet for the past couple of arcs in Dragon Ball z we barely touch the Dragon balls until we needed it at the last minute while the plot of Dragon Ball GT really heavily focused on the Dragon balls So what is GT a respectable ending closure for the Dragon Ball franchise better than super and anything after.
wooooow!!!!! when i first started this series, you weren't even close to being done with the boo arc, and i hadn't even watched or read dragon ball now, i have and while waiting for this to come out, i finished gt in about 4 days loved it felt it was a genuine attempt at making dragon ball last a little longer and i love the feeling of finality the last half of the show has i loved how vegeta and pan were handled in this show, and i love almost all of the new character designs, especially pan and vegeta i don't understand the pan hate, she was annoying at times, but that was kinda the point anyway, i can't wait to see what you have to say about gt! can't wait to enter the grand tour! thnaks for reading, and may you always have joy in your heart
Gah, forgot to remind you to open this episode with "Dragon Ball fans, I told you I'd be back! Again... And again... And so I am, with a new series I hope you will all enjoy!"
Looking forward to the new DBD Marathon with GT. And 1996, what an interesting year. The year not only DBGT began. But so did the Manga series of both Yu-Gi-Oh and Card Captor Sakura started to come out.
OMG I had no idea you were doing GT too! Ok enough joking around I am really glad you're doing GT because I've never really watched it, I never gave it a chance, and honestly unless it's a glowing dissection I likely won't so this will be a very nice way to sorta kinda not really experience it.
The reason so many fans seperate the two halves of what you consider the baby arc boils down to how GT got localised. In case you weren't aware, OG DB straight up got skipped just to go to Z since Western audiences simply didn't have the attention spam and simply advertising the series as "Super dudes scream at each other" was much easier. They later did OG DB dubbings during the Buu arc but it was more so to "get it out of the way" more than anything. When it came time to dub GT, they came across the same issue. They can't just have a lighter tonned story right after the buu arc, right? So what they did was air a 25 minute recap of the first 15 episodes, then it skips right to Pan infiltrating the main base by episode 2, just so they can get to the "cool" part sooner. The funniest part of this is that they had the balls to later drop the first 15 episodes as "lost episodes" on DVDs, which basically solidified the distinction between the two arcs. It got so wild spread that modern DB games also now make the distinction, albeit at a later point (they seperate the two arcs starting from when Pan and Goku arrive on earth) The good side of this story is that this caused GT to get a popularity spike. Still looked at as the black sheep, but it eventually gained a cult following. GT products consistently out perform OG DB in the west too, so it actually paid off somehow.
"in the west", the entire west isn't represented by english speaking countries, particulary the US. In germany they aired the OG DB first in it's entirety at least twice (there was third rerun but that weirdly started in the middle of the Red Ribbon Arc) and only then did they air Z. With GT it's almost the complete opposite to the US airing. We got the first 28 episodes and then once the cool fighting starts that you americans love ENTIRE EPISODES were cut, particulary episodes 29, 38, 46, 47, 54, 55, 56, 57, 59 60, 61, 62 and 63. Yes they skipped the entire climaxes of the Super 17 and Shadow Dragon arc. And those were never even dubbed in german, so on DVDs those episodes are just in english or japanese with subtitles. They censored and skipped some episodes because at the time, due to a school shooting, the censorship on tv shows and video games became a lot more strict (they also censored two episodes of the Buu Arc, the ones where those two assholes go on a shooting spree and Mr. Satan gets shot).
@@blur7491 Sorry, I called you american, but you are wrong again. Dragon Ball is insanely popular in South America, much more than in the US. And I also know that it is hugely popular in France and Germany too.
Yeah, this show always felt more like two arcs to me than the four it's usually split into...with one little five-episode interlude between them, like a Z-era disposable-bad-guy movie they accidentally stuck into the series proper.
yeaaaaaaaaa dbcember is one of my favourite things about christmas time CANT WAIT also just thinking back on super i really do think super and GT are about on par with each other
I can get why you would have it be one arc, but it really never felt like one story to me, once they get to M-2 it feels like a totally different saga. (one that's actually interesting >:)
Very excited for DBD December this year! Between starting GT, and covering Path to Power (a movie I've been wanting to hear your thoughts on for years), it's sure to be a real treat!
Dragon Ball GT makes Goku physically a kid but leaves him mentally an adult and Dragon Ball Super makes Goku mentally a kid but leaves him physically an adult.
Excited for this! GT wasn't perfect, but for what it was, I enjoyed it. You should consider buying the Dragon Ball GT animanga. I saw 3 volumes of it at the bookstore a couple days ago. It might help.
If given more time for the writing, GT could be the best series in the franchise. I don't know much about modern Dragon Ball, but I believe that I have yet to hear people claiming that the modern stuff had covered the GT part of the timeline. I wonder if the people in charge are afraid of not living up to the expectations.
Ouch...no Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku... I know the reason why but still a video review of DBGT without that gorgeous song feels so wrong... I hate TH-cam so much. Speaking of Dan Dan Kokoro. I love the Spain version (not the american latin) of that song, it is my favorite version 🎵 Anyway, I hope you talk about GT Trunks. Easily one of the most underrated characters and probably one of my favorites versions of Trunks. I am happy he is not 'serious and badass' like Future Trunks (and that's why I hate how they made GT Trunks just like Future Trunks in Xenoverse) Such a shame the writers didn't use him after the first arc.

One dumb detail I enjoy about the name "GT", and I don't know if it's intentional or not, is that G and T are the 7th and 20th letters of the alphabet, totalling 27, while Z is the 26th. So GT is "one after that".
Aw, that's so fun! I never thought of that!
"The Baby Arc" makes sense to me just as much as having a single Cell Arc does, the "Hunt for the Black Star Dragon Balls Arc" wouldn't have an ending. It just smoothly transitions into the Baby stuff on Earth.

Going into fan’s obsession with canon and with the knee-jerk reaction for people to take GT without Toriyama to be insulting towards him being kind of unfair (even moreso if you read pretty much any statement Toriyama has made about GT).

@@justinarzola4584 super is BEFORE z ends
@@nitecore-wx9lj Oh man. I had forgotten the GT rap existed..
Yep thats why im so exicted! I love the early baby arc aswell as stuff like the sugoro space!
My guess is, he will enjoy the Black Star Dragon Ball arc (which is funny since that is the arc most americans absolutely hate) and maybe a bit of the Baby Arc, but the rest he will dislike very strongly.
Most hate come from English dub which made everything worse. Most fan prefer to watch dub and so they don't give sub version a chance.
True i unlike many loved babys first form and his possesion gimmick how he took over the boy was crazy!
I think the justification for it being two arcs is Funimation condensing 13 or so episodes into a single episode so they can get to the action faster.
Baby ties back all the way until Lord Luud which is halfway through the "search for the dragon balls in space" arc, and we spent a lot of time in Giru's planet and building up to Giru's mystery before that, all of which ties to Dr. Myuu and to Baby by extension.
Wait until we get to Baby tennis and Uub becomes the Frieza arc Piccolo of that arc.
SSJ4 is one of if not the BEST transformations in the series imo! It takes what makes a Saiyan a Saiyan in the Super Saiyan and Oozaru aspects and brings them to a fascinating merger....MOAR worldbuilding and such please??
Yeah but It is also a contradiction, the biggest weakness of the Saiyans was the tail and the ozaru form, that's why when Goku and the others surpassed the strength of the Saiyans the tail disappeared,
@@Ivan-fg8fo nahh tails went away because Toriyama didn't want to keep drawing em.
9:55 "Who knows what adventures they'll have between now, and the time the franchise becomes unprofitable?"
@@fridaynightnicktoons6885 it's one of the reasons why i dislike super, no tension cause of the uub tournament being a thing
Slimming down the cast is great and all, but it's just downright weird they didn't make use of Uub as one of the new major characters.
16:12 that’s a very nice drawing of Tien
Remember when everyone had gigantic earlobes?
I agree that, as a concept, GT had much more premise to work with then Super ever had... too bad, they didn't stick the landing...

And yet Super's filler episodes are more enjoyable to watch than a lot of GT...
GT has gotten a lot more appreciation over the years so there will be a lot more fans excited for this dissection.
I was wondering if we were gonna group the Black Star Dragon Balls Arc and the Baby Arc together- even though most sources leave then separate (sort of like the Android Arc and Cell Arc), I think it’s smarter to combine them this way
True although the beginning of the arc is really vastly diffrent than the end!

Also the disturbing nature of Dolltaki and Luud haha. This is going to be a ride.

As for GT, I overall like it as the issues I had with Z are ones fans enjoy so we're still stuck with...25 years later that GT sadly did succumb to as you said.
Super Saiyan 4 is great
Repeatedly bring dead villains back is not. It lessens the impact of their “death “
@@HistoryandReviews Which is funny they didn't learn this and did it with Frieza many times and somewhat Cell.
Because the execution of all of it was HORRIBLE.
@@kevinlee9929 Funny how you say that when DB Dissection has been about how DB in general has mid execution.
"What Is GT?" Better than Super.
my first dbgt expiereince was weird
cause they cutted dbgt hard in germany
i always thought i missed some episodes but they cutted out entire episodes and even skipped fights
So excited to see some GT coverage! Especially how you are very detailed in your reviews!
Being here for the start of this series is nice. I found DBD over the pandemic and it was so fun to binge
Rip the musical intros
Great video as always, and I'm really glad you're covering GT. I wanna say off the bat that SSJ4 Goku is one of my favorite designs in the entire Dragonball universe.
Wow, I never thought I'd see a Halloween series reference in a DBD video but here we are.
Looking forward to diving into GT in earnest next month!
Beautiful new logo for a fresh new chapter. I'm very looking forward to this.
"Groping for direction" .. perfect phrasing
GT has some good ideas, in some ways it feels more imaginative than what we've gotten in the last decade, but the execution is subpar.
“How dare Toei think they can get that Dragon Ball themselves?”
Hell they still doing it today Super is a prime example of that and that's more like everybody missing Dragon Ball so much that they ignore all the flaws that comes with super because honestly super is now a kid show and nothing but oh let's change the color hair of these characters and let's ignore our continuity lol
kinda like the homage to how toriyama changed the cartoony dragon to the plain DRAGON BALL text
i personally love GT as it actually moved character arcs forward unlike super
and i LOVE the shadow dragon saga i love that the heros are punished for abusing the dragon balls which is a thing elder kai warned about in the buu saga
We can all agree that mustached Vegita is the best part of GT, right?
Without him, TeamFourStar would never have given us the "moostache" song.
No more music openings?? Dammit Toei… I just can’t see the Buu arc intro with that jazz piano piece and now it’s not even an option. I’ll miss them…
I am SO looking forward to this! I'm STRAPPED IN!
Similar to the buu saga, it kinda hit its stride the more it deviated from typical dragonball fair
Its part of why a lot of the best arc is the baby arc to most people. But the best parts of the arc overall was the actual setups to it rather than the arc
Most people could probably admit to the arc taking a bit of a dive after it transitions into typical dragonball fare after he infects vegeta
But even then, the fact that it stayed true to its themes of baby becoming exactly what he hated and feared the most in his last moments was still enough to leave it as a highlight in such a drag of missed potential
That problem started with Frieza arc.not a gt problem but a problem with the series as a whole.
18:01 In that case, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to call it the Black Star Dragon Ball arc?
Probably, though Cell and Boo didn’t get introduced until halfway through their respective arcs either.
@@DidgeridudeEX maybe, but the story began and ended dealing with the fallout of the BSDBs
I can’t wait for this dissection, GT may be bad but it holds a special place in my heart
Dragonball GT had so much potential to work with the best of early and late Z era DB to make something unique. The Grand Tour space theme is nothing short of genius and the only parts of GT I actually remember besides SS4.
looking forward to the GT dissection, never really heard anyone talk in-depth about the series.
Just here to say DBGT openings and endings make me cry bc nostalgia, they are beautiful
9:24 I'm in my thirties and I'm still in denial about this not being in the manga...
Bobbidi crashing the hamburger franchise was definitely the highlight of whatever manga existed in my imagination
the beginning of a new era with a new logo and no more opening music. Bit of a shame since those bits in the openings from early dragonball is what got me to watch it in the first place but I am happy you have to deal with less pain. Very much looking forward to the part of the series I know next to nothing of.
Can't wait for the next part! It's gonna be a grand tour down this winding road....or something like that!
Love the new logo & no intro music! Very hypeee. Was excited for this video
A new era has begun
Good video,what I like about GT is Ss4 Goku,Ss4 Vegeta,Nova,Omega,Opening and ending 2 don't you see,Baby Saga,Ss4 Gogeta.
wooooow!!!!!
when i first started this series, you weren't even close to being done with the boo arc, and i hadn't even watched or read dragon ball
now, i have
and while waiting for this to come out, i finished gt in about 4 days
loved it
felt it was a genuine attempt at making dragon ball last a little longer and i love the feeling of finality the last half of the show has
i loved how vegeta and pan were handled in this show, and i love almost all of the new character designs, especially pan and vegeta
i don't understand the pan hate, she was annoying at times, but that was kinda the point
anyway, i can't wait to see what you have to say about gt!
can't wait to enter the grand tour!
thnaks for reading, and may you always have joy in your heart
Gah, forgot to remind you to open this episode with
"Dragon Ball fans, I told you I'd be back! Again... And again... And so I am, with a new series I hope you will all enjoy!"
Arrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh! You totally did!
Looking forward to the new DBD Marathon with GT.
And 1996, what an interesting year. The year not only DBGT began. But so did the Manga series of both Yu-Gi-Oh and Card Captor Sakura started to come out.
And Inuyasha. Also, Pokemon was released in japan.
STEP INTO THE GRAND TOUR
I absolutely LOVE your fancy new logo!
It got so wild spread that modern DB games also now make the distinction, albeit at a later point (they seperate the two arcs starting from when Pan and Goku arrive on earth)
The good side of this story is that this caused GT to get a popularity spike. Still looked at as the black sheep, but it eventually gained a cult following. GT products consistently out perform OG DB in the west too, so it actually paid off somehow.
Jesus. The english distribution of this franchise its just... damn.
@@JackOfen brother I am not American, DB is mostly known in America and Japan, which is why I compared the two.
@@blur7491 Sorry, I called you american, but you are wrong again. Dragon Ball is insanely popular in South America, much more than in the US. And I also know that it is hugely popular in France and Germany too.

Looking forward to the Grand Tour (grand tour)...
6:00 Never thought _this_ would be how I found out I'm living in a simulation, but here we are.
"Unfortunately, no one can be _told_ what the Dragon Ball GT is. You have to see it for yourself."
Get ready for the Grand Tour
Yeah, this show always felt more like two arcs to me than the four it's usually split into...with one little five-episode interlude between them, like a Z-era disposable-bad-guy movie they accidentally stuck into the series proper.
yeaaaaaaaaa
dbcember is one of my favourite things about christmas time CANT WAIT
also
just thinking back on super i really do think super and GT are about on par with each other
Looking forward to the rest of the review! Always interesting to hear your thoughts on DB.
I was literally just thinking about your channel and saw this!! Love you fusion!
I can get why you would have it be one arc, but it really never felt like one story to me, once they get to M-2 it feels like a totally different saga.
(one that's actually interesting >:)
Grand Tour is going to be a wild ride
Very excited for DBD December this year! Between starting GT, and covering Path to Power (a movie I've been wanting to hear your thoughts on for years), it's sure to be a real treat!
🎉 just happy to be here in the new era of DBD
I love the Spain version (not the american latin) of that song, it is my favorite version 🎵
Anyway, I hope you talk about GT Trunks.
Easily one of the most underrated characters and probably one of my favorites versions of Trunks.
I am happy he is not 'serious and badass' like Future Trunks (and that's why I hate how they made GT Trunks just like Future Trunks in Xenoverse)
Such a shame the writers didn't use him after the first arc.
I didnt play any gt based story but doesnt he have the parapara dance?
Also atleast hes a echo unöike gt vegeta whos just a jerk for no reason!
