Absolutely agree have the rounds come to you. A conveyor system to the splitter and then a conveyor that takes the wood away is the ideal woodyard set-up. Stay safe my friend
Great idea. I use an old manure spreader to move my split wood from my seasoning pile to my wood shed. I took the finger gear off the spreader, but left the drag conveyor intact so I can run the wood out of the spreader, to the rear, to stack in my woodshed. Keep up the great video week.
@jlwehr6313 it is great, the height is good, I can reach all the wood from the side, no need to jump in and out of a truck bed, etc. And if need be, I ratchet the conveyor and off-load from the end.
That loading conveyor is the nuts and would certainly aid in a one man operation. As I watch these videos of the box wedge in action I continue to be amazed at the scrap that’s produced. I cut and split firewood for my own use and just use a big box splitter, although it’s much slower I can control the size and shape of the splits much better. Just my humble opinion and observation.
It's awesome, been talking about making one of these ever since I got the 22-28, even have all the chain and sprockets. You just need an excavator or log grapple at the end of it and you're in good shape. With that 37 D you definitely need an excavator in the yard.
I agree with you Dan the Conveyor is the Way to go with the Big Rounds. It needs a little Refined with an area to put the Rounds like a landing area. Would save alot of time in Splitting. Have to see what they come up with. Ron from the Woodyard in Duanesburg NY.
An old manure spreader would be ideal for feeding the splitter deck, could be run with orbit motor, could put up to two cords in one and you could split nonstop for quite awhile before getting back on the loader, wish I would have thought of this back in the day.Havent been in the firewood business for quite a few years now, makes me feel like starting again, especially when I see birch selling for $300+ a cord.
Needs a hopper at the bottom also so they don't go back on ground. Love this!! It be nice to have a log holder and push it to a saw to buck it an then send up conveyor to splitter.
If I had the equipment and the money it takes to make firewood easier I would simple buy it from someone and take the time saved and spend it with the people I love.
I made a hopper affair that was sloped on to the splitter deck that I filled with rounds, roughly half cord, with the loader, picture a ramp with sides that farmers load cattle into a truck with, only drawback was when blocks got jammed up in the hopper you had to careful poking them loose, had some pretty big birch(24 inch). Could split quite a few cords in a long day,my elevator to carry splits away was two bale elevators put end to end to make pile as high as 20 feet. I really like your splitter.
It’s a great idea, it just adds another expensive piece of equipment to an already expensive operation. The more you spend on equipment the more you have to sell to break even.
Yeah when Easton made gives you a $20,000 splitter and $10,000 conveyor, you would still need to sell 200 cords to break even on all the other equipment being advertised to make firewood easier. Endless money pit.
It's about time to see a great idea for the one aspect of log splitting that has never been adequately addressed. The physics are answered for a person with spinal fusion who loves to split firewood .
Hi Dan, that conveyor is awesome. Problem is cost. 10-12k. Might be more. I hope to put out a video showing the operation soon. From log cutting table to splitting table and round table for rounds maybe 900.00. Don’t get me wrong, that is an awesome piece of equipment. Check us out.Very interesting video.
Something like this definitely would help...or I thought about a mobile version with wheels that you could tow around, gather up the rounds and back up to the splitter...like a trailer but have it bring the wood to the back.
The conveyor would be a life saver ( knee saver )when I am splitting large rounds Im transferring the splitter to the vertical position, then wrestling the log while on my knees. Breaking the log down to manageable pieces. Then transferring the splitter back to the horizontal position so I can stand up. Splitting while standing is the most comfortable position to be in. I also love the log bucking rack your friend has
I'll send you a couple pictures of my setup. I made a rounds table that is 8' wide and 10' long and 36" high. For the top I used 4 sections of roller conveyors with 3 1.2" spacing. I put blocks under one end of the table that slopes towards my splitter. My splitter has a 30" wide x 72" long table on that side. The rounds roll down onto this table and are pulled into the splitting chamber with a rake. I load the table using my tractor and a manure tine bucket. The table holds 2 bush cords of rounds. It will keep you busy for awhile. I have 4 silage wagons sitting in my yard for the next update to it. One is already a hydraulic setup with 6' wide x 12' long steel apron fed deck on it. And on wheels. That one cost CAN $500.
Dan, i am actually thinking about making a cutting table onto which i will load a log, cut it, then roll rounds onto a slightly downward shute to the log lift. Would have to make some stop board to gate the flow...
Would be a game changer! Might also be better with less of an angle so chunks wouldn't roll back down or off from it. Maybe a decent sized gravity fed hopper/funnel type area in the beginning of it to really load it up and funnel the chunks onto the conveyor for even more split time without stopping as often once it's loaded with chunks? Log lift on that part or load with equipment? I think it is way better than without it and with just a log lift on the splitter. Not that a log lift isn't nice on a splitter, but this is WAY better! Anyway, thanks for showing this. Again, brilliant idea to the folks that thought of this. Please pass on ideas to those folks to think about.
It sounds like hammerhead attachments is working in the right direction to comer a corner of the market that has some need. We are trying to do something similar to that conveyor but we’re using an old homemade dump trailer to load the rounds into it with the tractor grapple . We have the trailer right up on the splitter like the conveyor but we lift the trailer to get the rounds back to the splitter . I actually think the conveyor method would have more control but we didn’t have an old conveyor to work with .
Im waiting for someone to build a machine that would take the logs and cut them into rounds then split them and send the pieces up a conveyor into a pile...... if it had a way to hold a bunch of logs so you could just keep going..... That would be great ... hehehe. I will say the overlooked piece in this vid is the table at the end of the box wedge to clear some of the scrap. I have always said if the scrap problem could be mitigated on these box wedges they would be the only way splitter would be made going forward. Great vid ! enjoy your channel !
The one concern I have is the log rounds kept rolling backwards down the conveyor belt. The solution to stopping that from occurring would be extra helpful. Tim in northern TN
I've wanted to build some sort of large table to hold rounds for a while now, just havent gotten around to it. I saw on hard working man he uses a large metal table, but the cost of that table is absurd and i cant imagine they'd sell well. I was thinking about building one out of the metal frame my grapple was shipped in, should be relatively wasy and cheap, im thinking $100-$150 max. Cant wait to see what you come up with!
I built a wooden version of that table. It works great. But I’ve also been thinking of finding an old manure spreader to dump rounds into in front of it for longer splitting time
Build a staging table framed with 4x4's and 4x6's and some 2x12's as a runway...... keep it tilted towards the splitter. An axel and wheels on one end and your forks can easily move it around as required... No power needed... load with your bucket.
You could achieve something similar by setting 1 or more roller tables. If you see those up the right way anything on them will gravity feed down to where you want it (your splitter). Advantage no engine or electricity needed. I have no idea about price though. A powered conveyor does have some advantages, it depends on your situation and priorities to determine what works best for you.
I did learn by splitting wood and getting enough for 4 years it gets so dry you have to mix in some of last years splitting or it burns fast I always stayed a year ahead splitting by hand
I've split wood my entire life I bought my first splitter 8 years ago and enjoy it but it could use a convear to bring wood to it and one to take wood away

Seems like this is built for firewood youtubers who get free promo equipment, or people who don't make a good business plan. Putting a 15k-20k splitter next to an at least 10k conveyor ramp, and then still need to bring the rounds to the conveyor or have that expense saw head. Might as well put that money down on a cheaper processer and save the effort.
But a cheap processor isn't going to be able to handle bigger logs, would probably be limited to around 12"-14" diameter wood that would go through it. AND a processor is going to require the logs coming in to be straight...processors are more limiting than many think.
It might help get the wood to the splitter, but look at how much work you are doing sorting the splits....a second person is still necessary or you will be going back and forth splitting and sorting, splitting and sorting. I would like to see you do that and see what you think about it then! You are only doing half the job.....the sorting and you are super busy. Lets face it, the laws of physics state you cannot be in 2 places at one time! HA HA. You are concerned with commercial production here, but you claim to have a home wood yard, and not be commercial! I do not get it.
It needs some taller lugs on chain so pieces dont roll back down and would be nice to have a taller side on one side. It would help with pieces rolling out the opposite side when using a tractor bucket to load. I am all for automation, but unfortunately it all comes with a cost that would need to be recovered some how. Yes, firewood production will eventually be almost hands free but us Hobbyist firewood guys will still be swinging a maul!💪🪵🔥

Get yourself a Tajfun DN2000 mod it with a cut off saw and hold down clamp , and a conveyor that goes to the splitter

Converor
Seems like this is built for firewood youtubers who get free promo equipment, or people who don't make a good business plan. Putting a 15k-20k splitter next to an at least 10k conveyor ramp, and then still need to bring the rounds to the conveyor or have that expense saw head. Might as well put that money down on a cheaper processer and save the effort.
But a cheap processor isn't going to be able to handle bigger logs, would probably be limited to around 12"-14" diameter wood that would go through it. AND a processor is going to require the logs coming in to be straight...processors are more limiting than many think.
@@Back40Firewood you are correct Dan, that's why lots of us have both a processor and one or several splitters.
Too much wasted wood with that splitter!!!
So much waste…
It needs some taller lugs on chain so pieces dont roll back down and would be nice to have a taller side on one side. It would help with pieces rolling out the opposite side when using a tractor bucket to load.
I am all for automation, but unfortunately it all comes with a cost that would need to be recovered some how. Yes, firewood production will eventually be almost hands free but us Hobbyist firewood guys will still be swinging a maul!💪🪵🔥
That’s pretty cool Dan back saver for sure, like to see one in your videos 👍, 🪵🔥🚜🏰🚀⛄️
