I was trained by the JKA while in Japan as a Marine. I continued under various JKA teachers in America. I was warned early that the JKA has left the spirit and true techniques of Okinawa. I investigated for years and found the warning to be true. The JKA installed sports into it's syllabus under Nakayama............... karate is not and never was a sport. As such, JKA technique has become sports oriented and it's soul has become adulterated by Japanese nationalists. The JKA vision now is to conform to modern BUDO which has no real enemy in mind, only so called development of character under the BUDO umbrella. I left the JKA, was deemed a traitor because I had been licensed to teach. For decades now I have concentrated on finding original karate, learning of it and studying it in practice, I would NEVER go back to the JKA or any of it's lineages, it simply does not fit the model, spirit and syllabus of Okinawan karate and as such is not karate at all. Is baseball played with a football, one base, one out and a four person team really baseball? NO and the exact same applies to the JKA, the original art can not be corrupted and still be the original art and don't give me any of that evolved BS................... Naka travels to learn of Okinawan karate, they do not go to him and the JKA. The Okinawan karate community knows the truth and that is why they use the term "KYOGI TE." It means false karate. "A lie told by millions for centuries is still a lie."

It's amusing how the MMA types yammer on how old style karate doesn't work, should they ever go to Okinawa & test their theory, my money's on Sensei Higaonna.
Gunnar Nelson, a MMA fighter, has a Goju-ryu Karate black belt. I don't really care about what they say. I have a great respect for traditional martial arts (especially Karate). If you wish to practice them, then go ahead, work hard and don't let these morons distract you from his path.
okinawa does have its native languages, but its till part of japan so people know Japanese. theyre bilingual. one of my neighbours is from okinawa and he said people pretty much speak either or heavily dialectal japanese. (in any event im sure he gets MANY visitors from all over japan so he has all the practice partners he needs, he even speaks a decent amount of english)
incidentally my neighbour also said he considered himself okinawan, not Japanese. im not sure if that was just him or if many people have a similar mind set
I am a 3 Dan ashihara karate and i met this sensei in Okinawa at a contest , his hands were hard as steel
