    Lyrics:
    Peter Pumpkinhead came to town
    Spreading wisdom and cash around
Fed the starving and housed the poor
Showed the Vatican what gold's for
But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees
    Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
    Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?
    Peter Pumpkinhead brought to shame
Governments who would slur his name
Lusts and sex scandals failed outright
Peter merely said, "Any kind of love is all right"
But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees
    Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
    Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?
    Peter Pumpkinhead was too good
Had him nailed to a chunk of wood
He died grinning on live TV
Hanging there he looked a lot like you, and an awful lot like me!
But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees
    Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
    Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?
    Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
    Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkin?
    Hooray for Peter Pumpkinhead
Oh my, oh my, don't it make you want to cry, oh

The arrangement is very true to the original by the British band XTC (recorded only 2 years prior) including the 'Let's begin' nuance, the main difference is Ellen's voice.
One year later, they covered also another XTC song "All You Pretty Girls" (originally from 1984 album The Big Express) on a tribute album, helping XTC out when they faced recording obstructions imposed by the recording company. You can hear it too here on the Dummies channel.

      "Peter pumpkinhead was too good.
Had him nailed to a chunk of wood.
He died grinning on live tv.
Hanging there he looked a lot like you and, an awful lot like me"
I believe that last verse I quoted was not only referencing JFK but possibly Jesus Christ as well.

I searched for this song because some random memory was triggered in my head. I was a kid and my dad came home from work and was telling me about this song his coworker showed him called Peter Pumpkinhead. At first the coworker thought it was funny and dumb and easy to make fun of but then my dad really listened to the lyrics and was very moved by them, so he came home and told me all about this song. But I never heard it anywhere. I just remembered it from what he told me that it had the line "hooray for Peter Pumpkinhead" and told of wonderful things this person did.
Well some 25 years later I have found it and it was every bit as good and as profound as advertised. Thanks, dad.

She’s got such an incredible pitch, my god. I love her choices, just flawless. And I love how they cut to her feet turning in at the climax, another great little artistic touch. And there’s something so alluring with her, I couldn’t keep my eyes off her. What a rocker babe. How was I not obsessed with her in the 90’s?? Great work CTD. 5/5 super underrated cover. I always have to give credit to the original, but I think a cover can do just as good as an original - just in a different way. I like hearing different versions of songs that I enjoy, so long as it's not done poorly. But then again, I don't really know what I mean by "done poorly." I still appreciate DEVO's covers for their differences, though they're just _so_ off from the original.
On "done poorly," I remember a B-52s "Private Idaho" cover in 2007 - 2009. It was just _bad._ The guitar wasn't on target (though the guitar parts do have some subtleties behind their simplicity that aren't easily heard, and I hadn't yet written my Guitar Tab for the song at Ultimate Guitar, so the group had no reference.) One female vocal just felt like they weren't even trying, but instead, it seemed like it might have been a mockery. It sounded like a $1 cover CD from the Dollar Tree.

Both XTC and CTD did right by this brilliant song and both made very cinematic videos to take their songs to the next level. XTC's video mirrors JFK's assassination and relationship with Marilyn Monroe. Crash Test Dummies video reprises Jeff Daniel's role as Harry in Dumb and Dumber and has elements of Life of Brian by Monty Python. Spectacular art all the way 'round.
