Dipping them in water to get a lighter gradient works on crappy paper, I think it's one of the few techniques that still works well! I've done that on amazon paper with good results, though I loved it a lot more in Mythographics, I was able to mix the colors together like you did and do gradients from light to dark with them there very nicely! I have the Ohuhu set but they're basically the same as these. I had never considered mixing with watercolor pencils, I am definitely gonna have to try that myself!
