- The first of its kind, Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) is building the first driverless, all electric, light rail transit in the United States.
The Honolulu Rail Transit Project (HRTP) will construct an 18.9-mile passenger rail system connecting East Kapolei in West Oahu to Civic Center in Honolulu’s dense urban core with 19 state-of-the art stations and a combination of at-grade and elevated guideway.
Stantec is providing construction engineering and inspection services supporting HART throughout the entire project life cycle, providing services like construction management (CM), pre-construction support, constructability review, resident engineering, project controls, and inspection.

This cost a tenth of what California high speed rail costs.
Not autonomous, automated, big difference. It’s also not the first. The Las Vegas Monorail has been in operation since 1995.
Tren Urbano in San Juan was designed from the beginning to be capable of automated operation, although they have chosen to have an operator on board for security reasons.
“The line will be governed by full automatic train operation, allowing possible driverless operation, although this is unlikely to be implemented for security reasons.” railway-technology 7/6/2000
It has come a long way though.
“The plan also includes $2.7 billion for mass-transit projects, including $2.5 billion for a fixed-rail system between Kapolei and Manoa.” Star Bulletin 2/19/2006
