There are three PC games I have held onto my original copies of: Black & White, Black & White 2, and Clive Barker's Undying. I make sure any PC I build always has a disc drive just for these games ❤

Seriously, I have copies of NOLF and NOLF 2 along with hundreds of 9x era PC games that I can install and play on retro laptops.

B&W and B&W2 are such classics and I'm so happy I held onto the physical copies. There was supposedly going to be a console game of B&W or a spinoff in between the two games but didn't get far in production. B&W deserves a resurgence just like how Fable is getting reborn.
Was thinking the same thing and going to do an install tomorrow until I thought "oh right no dvd drive" about a second before Jules said the same.
Well time to see if I can get an old laptop to boot so I can rip the iso then apply the no cd crack I've still got on a HDD.

@@Apocalypsewar1188 Black and White 1 will run just fine on modern systems as long as you have the no cd crack applied. I even used a portable install that would export and update the registry with the creature data as needed when I ran the game.
Black and White 2 has major instabilities on modern hardware. I have gotten as far as the fourth land in BW2 on a modern PC with many crashes, but couldn't get further than that.
@@epiphaner I downloaded them both from myabandonware a couple weeks ago and B&W 2 runs absolutely fine on modern systems after applying the patches. B&W 1 on the other hand is notorious for crashing every hour or two no matter what version or fixes you have, which sucks because I'm not a huge fan of the 2nd one.

VR in its current form is still such a gimmick.
"VR" support screams gimmick with no *real* integration. It'll be like that until I'm bed ridden and can't participate.
And more things. Lots more things. That game was such a playground, and today the could do so much more.

@@Seattletyy93 I disagree on both points. I've played VR first games that I really like, such as Arizona Sunshine, and there's tons of great VR integration. American Truck Simulator, Elite Dangerous, and MSFS2020 all have really good VR that's getting better. I'd like more environment interaction, MSFS2020 has done pretty well with the cockpit at this point, but the experience is not tacked on anywhere, it's all really good in those, imho.
Wow, didn't expect to see NOLF1 and 2 and Black & White on the list of which I do happen to own physical copies. Super fun games in my younger years.
I randomly have physical copies of a lot of these games. No one Lives forever was bundled with a PC my parents bought like 20 years ago, I bought the Movies on a whim (although never actually played it) and loved Black and White so have physical copies of both + the Creatures Isle expansion. Great games!

I loved Black and White. I'm pretty sure I still have my discs for it in a box with old games. I always loved how my creature would sometimes accidentally start eating people.
Kinda surprised that Gotham City Imposters wasn't on this list, absolutely loved the game on the PS3 and 360 and I really want a version on the PS4
one game i played through once on Gamecube, borrowed from a friend i think, was TimeSplitters Future Perfect. the story, settings, and all the crazy time paradoxes you create through the game were unforgettable. and the multiplayer had a ton of characters, since it pretty much just allowed you to use every NPC in the game, to my knowledge. i never played the first 2 games, but i may look into them at some point
I rebought Future Perfect on my xbox a few months ago. They have all three games and they are only about £2 each.

Hard to explain just how much I loved and looked forward to The Movies. I legit got a computer for it and had a guy from my dads work install a graphics card for me, all so I can play it. I wanted to be a movie maker, so I couldn't believe there was a game just for me. Ah, the memories. I still have my disc(s)

It was the definition of a flawed masterpiece, imo. And as pointed out in this video, just slightly ahead of its time.
Its not lost on me that 3 of the games on this list are all Lionhead studios games... I do have to wonder what it would take for EA to invest in another Black & White title.

I bought Shank and Skank 2 on psn on ps3 years ago. Never played them on my own console but played a bit of one at a friends. Went to download them recently and you can only download the 2nd even if you bought the first :(
I've played Black and White, I use an old computer that my uncle had. Never finished it, but it was still one of the most fun games I've ever played. I think it might be broken now though, since it doesn't save anymore.
I loved the black and white games. I had the disc tucked away in that draw everyone has where everything and anything goes into it. Two other games I can't seem to find anywhere these days is Freelancer and a game called Para World. Oh man Para World was so good. It's an RTS but you have dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures in your army.
The misses found it in a bargain bin in HMV for two quid. But sadly I can't find it on any online store.
Love paraworld. I have a physical copy and a digital copy I bought from Gamersgate back in 2014. Unfortunately the installation file doesnt seem to work properly and the disc is buried in the back of a cupboard that I can't be bothered to dig out. Same with Black & White 1&2, freelancer and several other games.

Surprised you didn't mention Unreal Tournament. Still hurts me to this day I can't play it as it was one of the first FPS games that got me into online gaming
I LOVE Wolfenstein 2009! Still have my physical copy and give it a replay once in a while. I also found a copy on eBay for a friend of mine. I played the Bethesda reboot and I like 2009 much better.
I think the original Black & White should be remade as a VR game. I think that would work really well.
Honestly with the gesture system it had for miracles and the default way of interreacting with the game world being a godly hand it's almost as if it was meant for VR before that was even really possible.

I loved the Black & White games, got so many hours in them, especially the first one, i didnt think the 2nd one was as good.
There are so many games from the fourth, fifth, and sixth console generations that fit into this list. Just a some of my favorites:
Panzer Dragoon Saga - had an extremely limited run in the US, incredibly rare to find and no rerelease
Shining Force 3 - still one of the best tactical RPGs I’ve played. Was supposed to have 3 episodes, but only episode one was released in the west.
Xenogears - incredible RPG with one of the best stories.
Brave Fencer Musashi - it was like playing a Saturday morning cartoon as an action RPG.
ya but if you still have shining force 3 and get the other 2 Japanese disks shining force central has basically a complete translation for the other 2 (to make a translated dish requires you to have English disk one but Japanese disk 2 and 3)
The suffering and Ties that bind. Amazing games. Wish they could be remastered.
I'd take a remaster any day... But more than that, a RE style remake would be welcome too!

I still have a physical copy of Black & White. It’s sitting in my old CD rack.
I played the hell out of wolfenstein 09. Thought I was cringe for liking it. But it had great maps, open zone, you always felt very sneaky despite it not really being a stealth game. Not to mention you wielded an amulet with powers that had to cool down. There was a puzzle like quality to some encounters. Cool bosses. Underrated gem.
Honestly baffling that SMB 35 is gone, and only was available for such a short time. It was so good!
How about 8 fanmade mods and remakes better than the original game? So many come to mind, but I'd love to see how your list ends up!
They've just released an F-Zero 99 on the Switch, which is the old SNES F-zero with 99 players simultaneous.

Black and White makes me cry, I grew up with it and it was amazing. So amazing.
WH40k: Eternal Crusade... the developers had all these plans for adding in extra factions and doing periodic campaign location changes so that over time the game would progress through various warfronts with new features and factional benefits and that just never happened. They took the servers down in 2021 and never made it so users could host their own servers so it is unplayable. You can't buy it because it was _only ever_ digital only and they delisted the game, and if you still have it installed you just get a screen telling you you can't play it.
Great list! I was hoping Overwatch would be number 1 on here because the game I bought in 2016 is unplayable now 😢
I wish we could see new Black and White or the Movies games. I loved both when I was a kid, and it is so unfortunate that there were no continuations of either. That or remakes/remasters would be wonderful.

I loved playing NOLF and its sequel. They were great games and the story was fun to play. I can still play it by running an old copy of OSX on in VMWare Fusion.
I'm pretty sure that lionhead had something to do with both the movies and black and white. I did a bit of testing for Lionhead on fable 2 and remember some art work for the movies on the walls

The one I think is the BIGGEST shame is Transformers: Devastation. For gamers who are kids of the 80's the game was like liviing a dream, but it got delisted (trademark expiration) VERY shortly after launch. You can still find used copys rather cheap, and there are torrent links for it but ZERO seeders. I miss that game

The Movies. That was such a great game, even if my movies made Ed Wood look like Francis Ford Coppola. That was so much fun to play.

Ok heres a game you missed,
I got it on Xbox 360 for like 2 bucks at gamestop, It was called "Shadowrun" not to be confused with its top down games, this is an online FPS team game with different classes, and it was freaking awesome. Was so sad when they closed the Servers.
Another one is Nosgoth, That Square was making on steam but canned, Vampire team TPS.
Prime examples of how dangerous and unfair it is that gaming publishers focus on Digital sales and sometimes make games digital ONLY. If at any point after you've purchased that digital game, the license expires, the publisher pulls it due to poor sales, etc... you just wasted your money and perhaps lost a beloved game
Battleborne was an absolute blast, the PVE anyway, would love to play it again with a good group

I just watched this video. He mentioned Black & White 1 & 2. I'm literally staring at my physical copy of Black & White 2 that I kept thinking "I should throw that away. I don't play it anymore."
Nope! That's staying in my desk drawer until the sun burns out. I don't want to play it today, but I will in the future, I'm certain!

Starblood Arena was easily one of my all time fave VR games, i remember it had server issues at launch which is just the death sentence for online only games, after a couple of weeks I gave up on it, when I came back a few months later it looked like everyone else did the same, such a shame

The biggest game from my childhood that this missed is Gangsters: Organized Crime. It was a masterpiece in strategy games. Technically there is a work around digital version with the help of github, but there's no normal easy way to play the game

I loved Mario 35 (and others on this list) but it was such great fun.
My pick would be Lemnis Gate. I loved playing that game and a Turn Based Shooter sounds like a awesome idea. But because the game is very hard to understand, no one wanted to play it and it unfortunately meant that Ratloop Games could never support it. I wish another developer would give the game concept another ago, maybe even make a Single Player Campaign for it.

It should go without saying that, while some of these games are lost to the annuls of time, some of the files for others do actually exist online (albeit not entire legally. Though things like NOLF does classify as Abandonware and is at least a bit more legal as a result). This includes other games, such as Alpha Protocol (pulled from Steam in 2019), Resident Evil Op RC (pulled from stores in 2020 I think), the ENTIRE Sims 2 collection (no longer sold on EA's store front), and almost all Dreamcast and Sega Saturn games ever to exist (which only a handful surviving on different platforms, like Sonic and Shenmue).
Now, again, companies get pissy about this stuff even though it's like throwing out an old shirt and then complaining when a hobo digs it out of your trash: You weren't using it, you never would again, shut up, but the internet holds many sites of people who I honestly respect for maintaining the history of gaming. So while I can't name names (I'm not betraying people who protect gaming history), I will say there's still ways to get your mitts on some of these.
Though if you do try to get any PC games, bear in mind that your OS is VERY different. GoG is great for old games if you want them legally and without any hassle, but for anything else you're looking at DOSBox at best and VirtualBox at worst (it's more effort).
I saw updating my Xbox 369 Halo 3 console and thought about two games that you mentioned. ABC and OOR. I have both on an HDD. I have the physical copy of the game and fire it up from time to time.
And no, you can still play both in 2022.

The amount of people loving black & white is great, it was one of the first games I played back in the day - will always remember it.
I owned black & White 1 & 2. I remember for whatever reason I couldn’t get them to work on my computer at the time but held onto them for years anyway. Did eventually play them years later. I wonder if I still have them boxed up somewhere…
I'm amazed that Battle for Middle Earth II and it's expansion didn't make the list if not the top spot.
And also Lego Island was an amazing little game that is sorely missed.

I always wanted The Movies. Black & white needs a reboot.
Lucky enough to own Wolfenstein 09, The Movies and Black and white 1-2 on disc. I still play Black & White 2 now and again. I’ve got a video of it running on my channel. Still, I would love a digital version of all of them and would buy them in a heartbeat. Another one to add to this list is Aliens vs Predator 2 which suffered the same fate as No one lives forever. The former being a pain in the arse to get running on Win 10 from what I remember. I hear there’s a patch to make the process of running it easier on modern windows. Haven’t tried it out though.
I’d sell both my jewels for a Black & White 3.
One of my favorite games is a game for DOS called Skyrealms of Jorune: Alien Logic. It was a great RPG based on a tabletop RPG by the same name. It's came on a 3.5" floppy disc and was never rereleased.
I am surprised that Echo VR didn't make the list, It had e-sports deals and most Quest users had at least tried it. Meta delisted it and closed all servers in August siting that it was more cost effective to shut down the game and use the money that would be spent on upkeep on other projects. (Like buying more developers and forcing them to not make anything.)

I have my physical copy of Black and White right there. But these videos are the very reason why realities like Gog exist. For the preservation of classic games.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine needs a mention. Just an awesome wolverine hack'n slash with awesome mechanics and easily wayyy better than what we got from the movie. How his wounds would come up and heal on the fly in real time was also so cool.

Why does "Games that must be purchased on physical media" automatically mean "Video Games You Can't Play Anymore" ?
There was a time when you had to buy EVERY game on a physical medium (and the hardware to go with it).
In this logic, a VERY high percentage of my games from my retrogames collection are "no longer playable" - but believe me: I can still play them every day :)

Ah, number 2 hits hard. I actually have the physical disks kicking around, but indeed do not have a disk tray. Sure, I could buy an external, but it's just one of those things you never get around to.
What else you cannot play: all the games Peter Molyneux promised. You can play most of what he delivered, but nothing he promised.
Transformers games belong on this kind of list, War for Cybertron, Fall of Cybertron and Devastation. But... if the Activision sale goes through, Hasbro apparently wants the series rereleased on Game Pass. So there might be hope for that.
I was shocked that "Marvel Heroes" was not on this list. I STILL mourn that loss 😢
it's called the "Keep Circulating the Tapes" trope. Star Trek Bridge Commander was like this for a LONG time, and its mod community was the ONLY thing keeping it alive until about '13 when there was a buyout of the mod server (supposedly to repurpose the drives for use as storage space for ads). five years later, and thanks to other mod archives, the whole lot was brought back and even online multiplayer got restored (that's right people, a game from *2001* had online play!) unfortunately, spring of this year, the OG modders and scripters, spotting the revival, popped in to see where their efforts went, noted that everything had been screwed with after nearly 20 years of "presumed abandoned efforts" and attempted to torch the community and run.
I was actually really hoping to see Battleborn on this list. For anyone who doesn't know, it was the original Champion-based shooter. Basically it was Overwatch before Overwatch was a thing. It was so much fun with PvP modes, Online Co-Op story mode, and a dynamite Single Player mode. When Overwatch hit the shelves however, it was the beginning of the end. It had so much style but it couldn't compete so its servers went offline. The sh*ty thing though is that it was one of those "always online" games even in single player, so its permanently dead in all firms. Breaks my heart.
