Note about Desert Bus: if you veer off the road, you don't just restart. You get towed back to the start and you have to watch the bus being towed back for the entire duration you've driven.
Yep, and we learned this from AVGN, i still can't believe such a game was made. and i'm sure you remember the other one, Crazy Bus. that one was even weirder.
@@BlackMaleLion Yep, it was made to be awful and that just makes it all that much funnier that it even exists at all. Joel's highlight video of it is still a fun watch just because he ends up entertaining his audience.
Actually the idea behind desert bus was actually a quite genius idea. In actuality it was supposed to be a middle finger to congress and the video game censors. In 95 when doom and mortal kombat was getting bad press because of the violence congress was pushing onto the video game companies to stop making violent games and make more games that resemble real life. So penn and teller created a game (it was for the sega CD by the way) called “smoke and mirrors”. And on that game they purposely made the most boring and lame game ever. You drove a bus from Tucson to Vegas in 8 hours (actuality time) and you have to control the bus the entire time. Just you, a bus, and the desert. After you completed your trip you were rewarded with one point. lol.
The story behind Desert Bus is hilarious. It was that period of time where the first Mortal Kombat was in arcades, and released on game consoles. There were also games like Night Trap on different platforms which was a game where you were intended to protect women from home invaders by setting off traps, but the fail conditions were... well, if you were very prudish, you might find them inappropriate. Politicians began a campaign to start policing video games and rate their content as well as who they sell these games to. During the hearings regarding this, someone said that because video games were violent, they inspired violent action, and therefore video games should reflect real world jobs to encourage employment or whatever. Penn and Teller were currently in development of a game for the Sega CD called Penn and Teller's Smoke and Mirrors, which was a collection of small minigames with a "trick" baked into each one to prank a friend. There there was Desert Bus. An eight our drive from Tucson, AZ to Las Vegas, NV. In real time. On a straight road. Speed limited to 45MPH. The only things to see are Bus Stop signs and the occasional cactus. And the bus constantly pulls to the right, so you always need to adjust otherwise you break down on the side of the road. And the bus is clearly empty in the rear view mirror. It was an attempt to highlight that the the idea from politicians was absurd, and would have work if it had been released in its time.
Additionally, a successful eight hour trip nets you... one point. And then you get to drive *back*. For another single point. If you do go off the road for whatever reason, you have to get towed BACK to your starting place, in real time. "Desert Bus for Hope" and other charity streams will have a team of people trading off, enduring the game to raise money for charity.
The minigame collection Desert Bus is from is called “Pen and Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors”. There are several other games, most notably the titular minigame which is a story-based platformer where you play as Penn and Teller and have to bring down a pair of “evil” stage magicians who are a parody of Siegfried and Roy. All the other minigames are designed to be rigged so that you always win while your friend always loses.
For the past couple of weeks now I've been selecting uncleared courses with Normal difficulty. You really never know what kind of level you're going to get. I often end up getting the following types of levels: - Courses with average length and difficulty that are only uncleared because no reasonably skilled player really gave them a chance. I often first-clear these courses on my first or second try. - Courses that are average difficulty but take multiple minutes to clear, and are uncleared because nobody wanted to play a long level all the way through. I often skip over these as well but sometimes I do play them and clear them. - Absolute garbage levels that essentially require the level viewer because you have to find invisible blocks in unexpected locations. These get a boo from me. - Well designed platforming challenges that really belong on a higher difficulty setting. Presumably a level doesn't become eligible for Super Expert until it has gotten a certain amount of (usually unsuccessful) attempts. So newer levels go into Normal by default. - Tech levels where I may or may not be able to figure out or do the tech required to beat it. Level viewer doesn't help with these since it involves knowledge of game mechanics. - Miscellaneous themed levels: boss rushes, puzzles, button mashes, etc. I've even gotten a couple of automatic levels.

That being said, WHAT IS A BEAN BURRITO LEVEL?! I hear that term here a lot but have no idea what it means. Could someone be super cool and explain?
A bean burrito level is a level that makes the player do extremely tedious and sometimes downright painful tech, sometimes to a frame-perfect degree, for however long the creator wants. Term was coined by the level called Bowser's Bean Burrito iirc, but I don't remember what that level entailed for it to have started a legacy of frustration, boredom, and questioning your life choices... much like eating a real bean burrito, I suppose. 😂
@@jewelxiat Thanks, that was really bugging me. I sort of suspected that as the ones Dave play seem to be extremely time consuming and repetitive. I was just wondering if there was anything specific to a bean burrito. Thanks for the response, now I know.
