If you want to see who's fault it really is, look at the cam sensor position change between when it leaves tommy's shop and then the position after the tuner reshoots "base timing" (6:46) in dustin's video. It's clearly oversight by the tuner because he maxed out the sensor in its throw to compensate for the real problem.

Jimmy makes a good point, he set timing as best he could to get it on the trailer. Then all the starting and revving and all that prolly made the cam gear lose and by the time the tuner got it the timing was way off. That should of been a huge red flag to the tuner. but he just adjusted it in the ECU.

This video shows so much character because of the way everything is explained. Tommy doesn't have respect for many people, but for the ones he does, you can really actually see it. The editing in this video is also done very well with the inserts from Dustin's video (for the people who haven't seen it yet) and makes it so he really doesn't even have to like "defend himself" even though the facts do.

From what I heard, Jimmy only did enough to get the car running onto the trailer, they would have known this and should have re-timed it properly. I don't know why you would knowingly send it on the dyno with incorrect timing. Tommy/Jimmy/Josh didn't do anything wrong here. On top of that the car sat for another month at Dustin's shop, he had no reason not to let Tommy finish the car on his own time.

My question is Dustin made it sound like such a rush to finish the car, even though he had it for a couple years prior. Rushes Tommy and Josh to finish it, then it sits for a couple weeks back in CA. Why not just leave the car with Tommy to get it properly done and then have it shipped back. I’m sure if Josh had a legitimate amount of time on this car he would have went through everything and caught this and fixed it. Or worst case I’m sure josh would have heard that on the dyno, and fixed it before it broke. Also full trust in Jimmy with tuning, he’s tuned lots of cars and never seen this happen before

A tuner shouldn't have to worry about mechanical issues. You bring the tuner a sorted car ready to tune and he does his job. 380whp doesn't sound like a lot until you account for the massively fucked cam timing killing the engine's efficiency. ALSO, if the car didn't stop running when they damaged the crank position sensor, it's possible that the tuner was running just off of the cam sensor. With the cam gear freely changing position, the ignition timing would've advanced /even further/ relative to the crank.

Bingo. The tuner wasn't seeing a sync error because the crank sensor was damaged. Ignition timing was triggered by the ever-moving cam timing and melted the pistons. Is there a chance Josh didn't torque the cam bolts? Maybe, but it's irrelevant. The tuner ignored a series of red flags and went for power pulls anyway.

In my opinion whether it was Jimmy's fault or Josh's fault, which I don't believe either of those is the case, the tuner should've at LEAST had a suspicion that it was acting weird. The fact of the matter is that whoever was tuning the car should've caught the problem before making 15 pulls... Even if somebody didn't tighten the cam gears or whatever, the tuner should've noticed that problem and stopped. Jimmy set the base timing and got it running fine. They definitely started loosening up after it was out of your hands with whatever driving they did. You guys were on a strict timeline, probably induced by Dustin, and you told him not to use the cam gears so.

Greddy adjustable cam bolts ain’t tight out the box - should of been checked
Base timing was set and fine, high revving before finished would of loosened above cam bolts
Enter the new tuner, has to mess about with base ignition timing as the above bolts have probably already wiggled loose.

On my haltech elite 2500, when a timing backplate bolt backed out and fell into my belt area and tore the belt up, the moment the ECU didn't find the trigger home for the cam, the engine immediately shut off and threw a code. The base timing thing is really throwing me off and honestly making that little power at 14psi should have been a red flag for any tuner. At 15psi I was making 420 at the wheel before optimizations and adjustments. Ended up with 480awhp at 17psi. Best of luck to Dustin.

Cam bolts were loose the whole time. It probably was correct when jimmy set it to the timing because it didn't have a chance to rotate and go out of time yet. Dustin drove the car a little bit and from the time it left CT to the time it went to the tuners, the exhaust cam gear rotated from the loose bolts and went out of time. That's why the tuner had to compensate with the software timing. Bolts were still loose the whole time and once pushed it, it backed out all the way and the engine went boom. This happened over a period of time caused by those loose bolts. What's hard to understand what happened here?

Hey Tom, I do restorations of classic cars and I know the feeling of being blamed by small accidents in work, I once had a customer complain about an issue in a paint job where the metallic flakes were not laying correct in a tiny spot of the door. The car in question is a citroen CX that had BIG bumper trim on the middle of the door, where the flakes were ''to ugly to show''. Which it would not show anyhow because of the said trim.
The customer dragged my name through the dirt, and made everything hell and I was called by other customers being afraid of shotty work. After he dragged me he installed the trim, took it to a car show in Norway and won prizes for both the paint job and car in general. People sometimes react strongly, it's a passion, it's understandable. But i completely understand that oh shit feeling when it first pops up. Glad everyone made up and ended it all with smiles.
Fun fact: He paid 1/4th of what a normal shop takes for a full restoration due to him being a long time friend of the family. It still sucked ass though....

Good job. I think the entire future of your shop hinged on how you chose to respond.
