Yes it is I got this situation once when I made some checking on a OBD II device I plugged into the obd socket its kinda weird when I scan for faults my remote did not response... then tried to look for TH-cam instructions and got this instructions from Dick Hannah... Thanks Dick its a big help its so simple as ABC, I was able to activate my remote again as in a tutorial open book for everyone.
Great demo! For Australian model Subaru's with the fob, you still cannot lock the key inside the car after you have disabled the proximity sensor by just closing the door after manually locking it from the inside. Attempting to do so will still unlock the door again as soon as you close the door, but this is not fob detection - this is standard mechanical door behaviour in Australia going back decades to prevent you locking your keys in accidentally. To lock the key in the car after enabling your PIN, you must manually flip the lock inside, then close the door whilst holding the door handle out in the open position, THEN the car will keep the door locked. Additionally, if you don't want to disable the proximity function outright, but still want to lock your key in the car, just put the fob to sleep by holding down the lock button on the fob and then tap the unlock button (Subaru logo) once and let go of all buttons. The red light on the fob will flash four times to indicate that it has gone to sleep (proximity and car start functions won't work now). You can then lock it in the car without disabling proximity mode outright (but obviously remember to set your PIN first!!). Wake the fob up by pressing any button again. Note that the fob enters a sleep state anyway if it hasn't been used to unlock your car for more than two weeks (try proximity unlocking your car using your spare key without pressing any buttons on it - it won't unlock - then press a button on the fob to wake it up, and try unlocking again to see for yourself).
Appreciated that! This is the only way that works on my Forester SK Thai model. It's also easier to put the fob to sleep state than disabling the proximity function which requires manually lock the driver side door.
My dealership (Subaru Colfax Denver) had no idea this was a thing first time I asked about it. Next time I brought it up they said it would cost me hundreds of dollars to do for me. Thanks for the video!
I've owned a push-button 2017 Forester since late 2016 and I can't believe I just learned this was a thing. Also, super strange that I randomly learned it from a video posted by a dealership that is, like, a mile away form me.
Thanks for the video as it appears this method changed on the 2017 models forward. This was far better than trying to understand the manual on how to set the PIN Code. It's too confusing. 🙄
Best instruction on TH-cam. Unfortunately, my 2020 Outback doesn't respond to step one. Push and hold lock while pushing and holding the right rear button. Nothing happens, even giving it extended time to respond. Why?
Try again holding key fob lock button down before you touch button on back of trunk/hatch. Supposedly a problem if you start pressing car button first.
So if I go through these steps and keep the fob disabled, does this mean that I can longer unlock the car with my key in pocket and touching the door handle? I frequently run and would love to not carry the fob, but I don't want to re-enable and disable every time.
I don’t think you’d be able to start car without fob but should be able to get in if your key fob was somewhere not near the car. Like in hubbys pocket.
Just got a great 2021 Forester. I attempted to set the pin code access on the gate before seeing this video and really managed to screw things up. I now can only get through the initial step of hold the lock button on the fob and the trunk lock button. It chirps but when I hold down thefob’s Subaru (unlock) button nothing happens. I called the local dealer and they said I’d have to bring it in to be reset. Is this true? I hope not!
Does this process work on a 15 legacy? Also. I misplaced one of the key fob. I found a few used on flea bay. Am I able to program the fob from home or do I need dealer or locksmith? Thanks
Is that possible to do? I was thinking the same. Once the key proximity is disabled, is it even possible to start the car until you re-enable the key? For models with push button start, how could you start otherwise? Without the proximity key you’re stuck, no?
@@Laborchet It is possible, and would not be stuck. With the Proxy Key disabled, the fob itself still has an RFID function. You get in the car, put your foot on the brake, hold the key up to the start button, the car will ding once, and you push the start button and can go. You still need the key to do it, but say if the battery in the fob dies or you're an avid outdoors person and don't want to go through the steps of enabling and disabling it to make a short trip where you'd disable and enable it again, the RFID tag is how you would be able to start the car.
@@717dash_cam gotcha! You’re correct! I just went and tried it out, with the key disabled, you can still use the buttons to unlock the car and once inside, the car started as normal when holding the clutch down and key up against the button.
My 18 Forester only has hatch button no button to the side. Does it mean I do not have this feature or do you use hatch button as stated for the Legacy?
You can do all of this by yourself. Dealer not required. As long as you have the keyless start fob as shown in the video, you have the system and can do it.
@@jean-pierreboudreau7269 You just go through the PIN enablement process exactly as shown in the video again. The new code replaces the old code. You don't actually "erase" the old code as such.
You make it up. They have rules, like no 22222 or 12121, etc. I assume no zero because there is no way to press zero times. Saw that info in manual (available to see online and save to files on iPad).
The closest you get to zero is 1. You have to press the button to initiate data entry, so there is no way to type zero unless the entry sequence started with zero to begin with, and that will confuse everyone except programmers.
Useful for those who are in areas rife with radio extender thieves. If you disable proximity unlocking on your car, then this method of stealing cars doesn't work. It removes a degree of convenience of course, but at least your car can't be stolen without getting physical hold of the key.
I followed every step... Pin was established. Keyless deactivated. Then key left in car, and flicked the lock tab on the driver's door, then door closed. But the car didn't lock. What have I missed? 2016 Forester iP
Imran Shamsul , I have a 2018 outback and had the same issue- use the button on the driver's door to lock all other car doors (as you would of sitting in the driver's seat and wanting to lock all doors), then flip the driver's door latch to locked as per this video, and finally close the driver's door whilst holding the door handle open. All your doors should now be locked.
On purpose. You don't want just anyone being able to set a PIN on your car, do you? If you want really complex, check out the manual describing how to disable and re-enable proximity mode using your door unlock button and several open and close actions of your driver door!
I've watched several videos on how to use the Pin Code Access but this is BY FAR the best!

Better explanation than the book for 2018. Thanks
Can confirm that it hasn't improved in the 2019 manual either!
Works great thanks. You don't have to redo steps once the code had been set. I love this feature.
Thank you for helping the community, it works on my 20my STI, the manual is very confusing!

This was a perfect video! Excellent explanation of setting the code *and* using the code!
Great explanation. New to the Forester family.
Thanks. The 2019 manual tells you to "Perform step 5 again..." However, there are two step 5's!
Awesome, thanks for the video! Worked perfectly on my OB 18.
Can you adjust the "beep" volume louder to hear while entering PIN? I am frequently in places where it is loud and I can't hear the beeps.

Excellent, thank you for doing this. Could not get it to work on our Ascent while following the manual. This works.
Excellent video Jeremiah!
excellent video, no B.S.
Very interesting, didn’t know you could do that but I’m curious in what situations would you want to do this?
Going swimming. Don’t want to carry the fob in pool or place in locker.

Can I program the rimont key that by myself or do I need to cam tho the deal t. Roni
Sir, how can I know what battery type that car has?
Can it be a 4 digit code or does it have to be 5 digits ?
Has to be five. If you're used to four digits, just double-up the first or last digit.
Fantastic, Thanks for the simple explanation!
Can you lock the car with the pin code as well or you still have to go to the driver's side door to lock it again?
The PIN only unlocks the car. You manually lock your car the traditional way you always have before smart keys existed.
That button is also on the 21 Impreza.
Does this work for 2013 Outback with push button start?
Is that the same step to Promgram a new key fob to start the car?
No.
Does this process work on a 15 legacy?
Also. I misplaced one of the key fob. I found a few used on flea bay. Am I able to program the fob from home or do I need dealer or locksmith? Thanks
I was told that you need the dealer.
Thanks 😊
This would have been a good opportunity to show how to start the car with the proxy sensor disabled and/or when the fobs battery is dead.

I tried this on 2017 outback and when I go to put in code the hatch keeps opening. Why is that happening? It won't let me set pin code. Thanks
Make sure you're using the button to the right of the hatch release button. Remember, you must have keyless/push to start.
How do you reset the pin code if you entered it wrong and now don't remember the code?
Follow these steps again.

Hi Dear, does it works with Legacy 2.5 GT 2010? Do you know if this procedure also programs a new key? Thanks a lot. Best regards, Hercules
did you start the car with the pin code as well?
No. It allows you to unlock the car. Then reactivate the key fob. Then you can restart the car.
