    I have a 23 Forester. I disable the fob by holding down the lock button and pressing the Subaru button twice. That was a well done vixeo.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you for being specific that you need to press the lock before you press the button on the tailgate. I watched many other videos and that part seems to have been left out. I was pressing them simultaneously and could not figure out why it did not work until I watched your video.

    Cheers Rick, I actually knew about this feature, I just haven't got around to setting it up myself.
    Just a reminder as well to another owners, _don't , just don't use your number-plate numbers as the code or anything on the vehicle as the code._ While this might not be a feature that is well known by Crosstrek owners, I can sure as shit say that car thieves know all about this feature... just don't make it easy for them. It's like passwords for your computer/phone etc don't choose obvious ones.

    Thanks for the step by step. That's a neat tech feature to know. Here's another option. My 2018 Crosstrek (Ice Silver) is a Premium. At time of sale I opted for the Subaru Starlink subscription that includes Auto Door Unlock feature. (First 3-months were free.) It has proven to be wonderfully convenient. When our daughter stays later in NYC after work, dropping the car at the train station frees me from being on call to pick her up at (all hours). She enters the PIN code to open the door. The spare key is in the glove box. The app alerts me at the same time. It's removed a layer of possible family friction so we really like it. The convenience is worth the cost and I will pay it til she moves out or gets her own car.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Matt, thank you for sharing the info on the starlink system. Very cool story about your daughter and leaving the car. Honestly, that could be a Subaru commercial. :) Great stuff. I did come with my car as well, but I didn't really explore all of the benefits too closely because I wasn't planning on keeping it. You have made me want to look into it further. Thank you Matt. Cheers.

      Very glad I could help and thank you for the nice feedback. I only just found out about the feature myself. I think it is a great option for those of us who are active and don't want to lose or damage the key fob.
      I was on the fence as well when I traded my 14 and it was Sirius/XM that moved me up to the Limited. I am so happy I went that way as I have come to really like the keyless entry and push button start. It is so nice to just keep the keys in your pocket and open the doors etc. The bigger head unit screen has been nice as well.
      Best of luck with your new car and let me know what you end up with. Cheers

      Hi Rick , we have the start of new taxation policy in Saudi waiting for the market dynamics to take shape , for leasing offers might take another 6 Months to have things setup here. Currently I drive a European Spec Ford Focus Sport Hatch , with kids growing up is what's making me go for an upgrade or give my car to my wife for ladies can finally drive 3rd quarter of next year.
      With Recarco seats in the focus got used to so much comfort of these , or for that matter any European cars seat cushion that supports and keeps you nimble.
      Having to have driving 2011 Forester for a month in the past was not happy with its seats , what would be your opinion for Crosstrek seats on a long drive ?
      And it would also be good to know passenger seats feedback on long road trip.
      I had looked in to 2 options before I finally scaled down to Crosstrek to be a perfect fit, the other option was Peugeot 3008 which is car of the year 2017 in Europe.
      Some other things which I came across was Thin Paint coat over sabarus not sure what's the reason for them to keep it this way.
      And Finally wanted to ask you on recurring Maintenece cost and are you using Motul as standard from the agency ?
      Thanks a lot for your Help.
      Cheers
      Abdul

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bet the Recaro's are nice. When my wife bought her WRX awhile back I noticed they were an option on the 18's, but they were quite expensive. I believe the package was seats and painted calipers. She was good with the standard seats so I have never had the chance to try them.
      I have yet to do more than about a 110 mile day trip in the 18, but so far the front seats have been quite good. More supportive and comfortable than the 14's seats were and I did a few 9 hour days in that car with no issues. The Driver's side is power on the 18 so you can really adjust it very specifically to your comfort. I don not have a great deal of rear seat feedback for you, but my son, who is 16, says they are great and there is a good deal of leg room back there as well. I have been back there for a few short trips and they seemed pretty good.
      As to the paint issue I would agree with you there. My 14 had a bunch of paint chips up front and my STI was similar. You might have seen in my videos that I put on a clear bra up front and I highly recommend one when you get your Crosstrek. Worth the investment if you play to keep the car for a few years.
      Maintenance wise my 14 came with free oil changes and basic service for 24,000 miles so it was nice to not pay for them. My last couple I did at the dealership and I believe they just used the Subaru synthetic oil. My 18 also has a free maintenance set up as well. I ended up buying a maintenance plan through Subaru because my buddy over there set me up with an amazing price. It covers everything with no deductible including brakes, shocks etc.
      I hope that is helpful Abdul, please let me know if I can answer any other questions. Thank you very much for watching the videos. Happy New Year.

    Worried about the battery in the proximity key fob battery suddenly dying?
    I have wondered about how long the battery in the key fob of my 2018 Limited Crosstrek would last and didn't want to get stuck with a dead key fob. I just learned that after having the car for just over two and a half years a message appeared on the dash indicating that the key fob battery is low. You can then get a new CR2032 battery and replace the old one in the key fob. This is a very handy feature!

    My 1995 Legacy 250T wagon and 1997 Grandwagon (Outback) both have this feature, but using the driver's door handle to enter the PIN. You can tell if a car has this feature (even if it's not been enabled by the owner) by locking it and then lifting and releasing the driver's door handle. If the car beeps then it has this feature.

    Great feature. I said something about it to my salesman when I was in getting my first oil change and he didn't know about it! My first Subaru. Big GM family here in Michigan. People were shocked when I bought it.
    Got her loaded up now for first big scuba dive trip to Florida.
    Is there any cargo pods out there that work with a roof bike rack? Kinda tight with tanks and dive gear.

      @AZdroptop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats Eric! Fellow diver here too. I have not researched the pods because I have 2 fork mounted bike racks on the car all the time, but I know there are a couple of sizes available so maybe you can get away with both up there.. Because of the space problem when you start carrying gear and people I bought a hitch basket and it has worked well. Only downside is you will have to get a hitch first. Have a great trip and thanks for stopping by.

      Hi David, thank you very much and congratulations on your new Crosstrek. I have not done a specific X mode video as of yet, but that is a great idea. I was out yesterday doing some filming and had to use X mode a few times to get up and down a few areas and it really is a great feature. The hill decent part of it is pretty cool too. I have demonstrated the use of X mode a few times in different videos, but nothing all in one place...My first review had a quick X mode shot and in my first Santa Rita Mountains Video I used the hill decent. See the links below. I have yesterday's video done, but had to re upload it because of a section of bad audio. I didn't realized I had accidentally turned up the volume on the opening monologue. Oops. Should be up here again soon... Thank you David cheers. Let me know if I can answer any questions...

    How to lock the doors with the engine running
    For Subarus with the proximity key fob, here is how to lock the car with the engine running: with all the doors locked, unlock driver door by pressing the Subaru button on the key fob; get in and start the car; exit the car and close the door; take the hard key out of the fob by pressing the little silver button on the back of the fob; insert this hard key with the engraved side to the left (it will only go in about three quarters of the way); turn the key to the left (it's quite stiff for the last part of the turn - I sprayed some graphite lubricant into the lock opening and that loosened it up); take the key out. The car should now be running and fully locked. To enter the car, insert the hard key and unlock the driver's door by turning the key to the right. This is useful if you want to warm up the car in cold weather or cool it in hot weather before driving off.
    Here is a link to a good short video explaining how to do this th-cam.com/video/ajz_EkS2rmg/w-d-xo.html

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Rick, just bought a 2018 Crosstrek (XV here in Australia) and am looking forward to getting it out into some rough terrain (we call it suburban streets as our roads here in Sydney are pretty average). I surf so this feature is going to come in very handy.
    Like most if not all new car owners I was given two key fobs, one my wife uses and one I use.
    I was wondering if I use a pin code with my fob, would my wife need to use the same code with her fob?
    and ...
    Can you change the code you use on your own fob or are you bound to use the original pin?
    Thanks

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Garry. Congrats on the new Crosstrek! What color did you all choose? That is awesome that you surf. Something I have never tried over the years despite all of my visits to Hawaii. It looks quite difficult but amazing. Do you use a GoPro on your board at all?
      As for the key fobs and the pin code. My understanding is the pin code is actually programmed into the car, and not the specific key fob as you do not need a key fob with you to use the code. In most cases you will deactivate your key fob, leave it in the car, then come back and use the code for entry. At home I will sometimes need something from the car and instead of grabbing the key I just enter my pin code to get in. So I believe you will both use the same pin code. Hope that makes sense? Let me know if I can help with anything else and all the best to you and your wife! Have fun with the car. Cheers.

      Hi Rick
      Thanks for the quick reply. I bought a white XV because I liked the contrast between the body colour and the trim. Since buying a Subaru, I've noticed just how many there are in Sydney, especially on the coast where I live. No, I haven't attached a GoPro to my board when I've gone surfing but my daughter has one. She took it on a trip to Europe and came back with stunning footage which she edited into an amazing movie.
      What you said about the pin code being programmed into the car and therefore possibly only using one code makes sense but I'm wondering how those people go who buy a used Subaru that has a pin code already programmed into it would be able to use the function.
      Sorry but I have another question. I am nearing 1,000km on my car and, as others have noted, have found that it is sometimes sluggish when it comes to relatively steep highway stretches and I'm not a lead foot by any stretch of the imagination. I was watching another video of someone who had bought a Subaru Crosstrek/XV and they spoke about how they noticed an improvement in performance after they'd done more than 1,000km. Did you find that with your Crosstrek?

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great color choice Garry, I would have chosen white if they had a Crosstrek in the configuration that I wanted. Very clean looking. I bet your daughter's movie is pretty awesome...it is really amazing what GoPro camera's have allowed us to see and film.
      As for the Pin code, you can reprogram a new code at anytime as long as you have your key fob and just follow the steps. So if you forget your code a few months down the road just put in a new one. Just don't deactivate your fob and then forget. :)
      I didn't notice a big change with the 18 like I did with the 14 as it broke in over time, but I did feel a little change. If you have the CVT try going into manual mode on climbs and keep the gear a little lower so you get the revs up. Had to do that a lot in my 14 when going up the mountain climbs here in Arizona. Cheers Garry, let me know if I can help with anything else.

    hye rick, great video. i hav a question, is this pin code works for single use? means do you have to set the code every time you want to leave the key? or you just have to set it once and it’ll work every time? thanks

      Thank you. Your pin code should work until you change it. After making the video I put in a new code and that one is still working for me a number of weeks later. If the battery is disconnected My guess is you will have to reset the code, but I am not 100% sure on that. Cheers.

    Hello Rick, I am thinking about getting the 2018 crosstrek, and wanted to ask you about oil consumption on the new crosstrek? Did you notice any?
    I know that in America, 0W20 oil is used if I am not mistaken, and in Europe we usually use 5W30, and this may influence more or less oil being burned, but still would like your feedback on this. Did Subaru solve this issue?

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thank you for watching, subscribing and for your question. At this point I have not had any first had knowledge of any 2018 Crosstrek's having oil consumption issues mine included. In the past I know Subaru's have had problems here and there with it, but personally over the 4 Subaru's in my family we have not experienced it. My wife has a patient who did have an engine replaced by Subaru because of it. His car was a 15 Outback if I remember correctly. I will check in with my Subaru buddy, he has worked for them for about 10 years, and see what he has to say. I think if you did buy a Crosstrek and had an issue Subaru has a good warranty and seem to stand by their products. If I hear anything I will respond here and let you know. Cheers and let me know if I can answer any other questions. Rick

      Rick Hutton I went to the dealer and tested the car, and it is brilliant.
      I really enjoyed the drive, and it is a really comfortable car. I could drive it all day with no issues.
      The other thing that surprised me is the interior space, I mean I didn't think it was so big inside, I had a lot of headroom an legroom, the feeling from inside is that you are driving a bigger car that what it actually is.
      Materials felt premium, everything looked and felt well put together.
      I am from Romania, and got an good price from the dealer, but when I searched in Germany, I contacted a dealer from there, and got an excellent deal, the exact same car 2000 Euro (~2400$) cheaper.
      So I am Set to buy the car from Germany apparently, as it is cheaper there.

If so, and I don't have my car here at work today so I will have to double check tomorrow morning, I would either just wait about a minute or so and then reenter, or go ahead and enter numbers even if wrong, until you have entered 5 numbers and the car rejects the wrong numbers and then reenter the correct code. Each button push represents a number, 1 push =1, 3 pushes=3 etc. You will get a beep with each push. I believe it explains it in the manual as well.

    I see one problem with this. You left your your fob in your car. What if a burglar smashes your window? Now, they can drive off with your vehicle. One solution is to put your fob in a metal box (Altoids box) or a faraway pouch and hide it somewhere in your vehicle.

      @@AZdroptop yes of course.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  ปีที่แล้ว

      In that case I am not sure why it wouldn't be working? As long as you have a code programed and the fob in deactivated you should be good to go.

    • @reneehamers
      @reneehamers ปีที่แล้ว

      My dealer solved the problem. After pressing the lock button on the door, you have to hold the door handle open (towards you) while you close the door. Otherwise the driver door won’t lock. A crucial detail missing from all manuals and tutorials.

    I get it, but if you leave your key in the car and somebody breaks in and sees the key, you have it disabled, but they can actually look it up to enable it again and steal your car.

    For people in Australia or other places that followed Rick's explanation but couldn't lock the driver's door, hold the outside driver door handle open as you close the door. This will lock the door and secure your keys in your car. Everything else is exactly the same.

    Read the procedure in the manual to set a PIN code and I was really scratching my head. Explained in a video makes it *somewhat* clearer but I don't think I will dare to use this. Steps are a bit too complicated to remember. Nice try Subaru.

      You push the button in the back. So push it 4 times, beep, then the next number beep etc.
