Thanks again for another very helpful video. I was able to program a secret PIN into the tailgate hatch. Not sure if it is required, but the first couple tries failed. I then disabled the proximity sensor and proceeded to successfully enter the PIN. One way or another, this was a nice feature I wasn’t at all aware of. Many, many thanks!
thanks, good to see it done before I do it, did it as you did, and manual says to repeat it to "register' it, did that, worked fine. Also put one of key fobs to sleep and leave in car.
Amazing informational vids on the Subaru 2020! We noticed your Subaru emblem on the hatchback featured mountains. Is this a sticker, a custom emblem or an add on? It looks good.
Ryan, thank you for the all the cool information! I'm sure you have it posted elsewhere, but where did you get the cool license plate frame and logo cover/replacement?
Thanks for a great vid. I was able to set up my pin. One question: can you deactivate the audible signal when you use the pin unlock as you can with the car alarm?
Thanks for the helpful videos. I tried entering the code today on my 2020 Touring XT and it doesn’t want to go into the input mode. I am pressing and holding the fob lock button and the small rear lock button on the rear hatch (to the right) but I do not get the intermittent beep. Any ideas?
OK, I figured it out. In the video you say “we’re going to press and hold the lock button, ‘as I do that’ I’m also going to press and hold the lock button on the rear hatch”. In actual fact you have to press and hold the lock button on the fob *first* and then press and hold the lock button on the hatch. I found if you try and press the hatch lock button at the same time as the fob button it doesn’t work.
The use case of leaving the key in the car if you're at the beach makes perfectly sense! Never thought about this! Is there also a way of locking the car with PIN or is it just "press the lock button on the driver's door"?
@@SubaruOwnerTips The jury is still out. It's back at the dealer. The Auto-stop isn't working properly, and the battery went dead on Thanksgiving day. I'll let you know what happens.
@@TheSilverprint, I'm sorry to hear you're having problems. I wonder if the two issues are related. A bad battery would cause the auto S/S system to malfunction (it measures the battery health before enabling auto S/S). The OEM batteries aren't the best in the world, but one failing is rather rare. One question, is there anything staying on in the vehicle when you park it? And, are you storing the key fob well away from the vehicle when it isn't in operation (at least 20 feet)? They key fob being too close can cause battery drain & kill a battery pretty fast. Other things that can kill a battery on the 2020 OB include: operating the rear gate frequently, playing with the power seats over and over, turning the ACC or power on without the engine running, turning all the seat heaters (or vents) on high, only taking short trips and not letting the battery fully charge.
@@SubaruOwnerTips Just an update. My car is still at the dealer waiting on a battery (7th day). I got in touch with Subaru Corporate, and already they've called the dealer and will follow up Monday. They, Corporate, seem to be very proactive🤞.
Intresting... since my state you get a ticket for any frame around a plate. License plate covers and some license plate frames are illegal in Pennsylvania because they obscure the plate. They might not obscure it by much in some cases, depending on the level of tint or the frame, but the law states the plate (regardless of what state the vehicle is registered in) cannot be obscured in any way.
I’m looking into buying my first Subaru. Think of the same model as you, outback XT Onyx. I hear so many mixed reviews about the CVT transmission. What’s your experience with Subaru reliability?
@@jquess296, The Onyx is great. I chose the Limited XT after carefully comparing all the features between both trims. You might want to add that one to your list to check out. For all of the XT trims, Subaru put in a CVT with a higher torque rating than the lower trims. The trick is to keep them from overheating, and to never slip one (watch cargo/towing weights, hill climbs, etc.). Only time will tell how reliable this transmission will be. My take is that they probably overbuilt it for the 2020 Outback XT. As long as there isn't a hidden design flaw, they should be good for quite a while.
@@jquess296 Worth noting is that the XT Outbacks use a different beefed up "High torque" CVT transmission than the 2.5L powered motors. If you search around the net, you'll find allot of folks that feel the Subaru CVT design is among the best. I cant speak to that but can say that the transmission in my 2020 Limited Xt feels as good as (or better than) any car I've ever owned.
I can't get past step 1. I have proximity turned off, press and hold lock on fob and small button on hatch at same time, I never get the beep from car. Watched and tried many times. Cant figure out what i may be doing wrong. Any advice?
KF5VH > N2OW Did I miss something in the video ? It seems like once you unlock using the pin code you can not relock without a FOB. FWIW. Also, when putting the car thru a car wash ... shouldn't the doors be locked? All it takes to open the gas hatch is a little pressure ... and then the gas cap is exposed and the cover is 90 degrees to the body which can't be good.
Nice to see a fellow ham in the comments. I just went out and tested it. I was able to unlock using the pin code. I then was able to lock the door again by touching either the lock button inside, or the touch-sensor on the door handle. I didn't need to activate the fob. If the fob is in "sleep" mode, you do need to wake it up first. And yes, if you go through a car wash lock the doors! I need to do a video about that. Several people are unsure how to get the car ready for a car wash.
@@SubaruOwnerTips This is my first Subaru (2020 OB Touring XT). Thank you for all the work for your videos. I have an OpenSpot3 in the OB. About a six inch USB in the front USB port, hangs towards the passenger side, and slips 1/2 way into the pocket by the passengers left knee. So far it works great! The OS3 tied to the onboard hotspot and my BTECH 6X2 and I am in business without any outside antennas.
Edit: looks like you can't do this unless you're subscribed to Starlink at the higher level that allows remote starting, etc. Cannot get this to work. Other people have done it, so I am guessing that there is some menu setting in the vehicle that is preventing this programming. It would be nice to identify that. @@brandonfranklin8108 You are going to love the XT. The turbo is plenty zippy for a vehicle like the Outback, plenty of torque. There are no issues moving the Outback around with that engine. I’m assuming that the car beeps regardless of the code being entered by the pause after and NOT a correct (and thus easily discerned) number of taps when entering the PIN. Nice color BTW, wish it was available with the light colored interior or Touring model.
I tested this today. A beep occurs any time a number is input, even if it is the wrong number. It would not be easily guessable. For example, if you tap "three" it would beep even if the correct digit is "six."
Be sure you are pressing the correct button and following the proper starting procedure. Also, the chirp can be a little quiet. If you are in a very noisy area you may not be hearing it.

The XT comes in three trims: Onyx, Limited, and Touring. The Limited and Touring are also available without the "XT" - which is Subaru's way of indicating the engine type (XT has a turbocharger).
Can ZERO be used by not tapping during the interval?
Good question, zero is entered by tapping 10 times. I'm guessing most people will want to avoid using a zero.
Just like the Cinco Phone!
