    The bathroom tile in my new house looks exactly like this tile and with the thin grout lines as well. I will have to save this video for my next project. Thanks for the tips.

    Thank you for posting! Followed your video to a tee and our tile floor looks AMAZING! The tile floors to the house we purchased is what drew me to the house in the beginning but after we started moving in I noticed that the grout looked uneven in certain areas. We hired a professional floor cleaner to help us clean the grout, but he told us that the grout wasn't dirty. The grout looked uneven because certain areas of the grout was starting to come out. Just spent 2 whole days with my fiance to regrout our tile floor. He kept telling me to do other things that he read online, but I told him he HAD to follow EXACTLY what you did. Thank you so much for sharing!

      That's great, Melissa. Glad you guys took on the challenge. It is work no doubt, but sounds like it was well worth it. New grout can make a huge difference in the way old tile looks. Had to smile at your conversation with your fiance. He has learned a valuable lesson and don't let him forget it... if he will only always listen to you, things will work out great! Thanks for your comments.

      Thanks, Steven! I appreciate you watching! I do not envy you, however, for the job ahead of you. It is a lot of work and very boring!

      I haven’t done another regrout like this one since, John, and really struggled with how monotonous the job was. Based on how much you can do in a day, it is easy to calculate how long you are going to be on your knees doing the same thing for days on end! There was a lot of square footage here! Was just in the home about a month ago adjusting some drawer slides and the grout still looks good!

    Those tools look more helpful than my screwdriver. Thx. Does Travertine have divots ? How would one clean travertine esp when dirt settles in those divots ?

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since Travertine is real stone, it will have divots, imperfections and stress cracks that can develop over time. Dealing with dirt in those spots is just a part of it for having the real stuff, T El.

    Congratulations on the completion of this project.. this video was done 6 years ago and depending on his house's square footage, he probably just finished. 😂🤣🤣

      You're a little off, but two weeks seemed like six years! This was my first TH-cam video so I reflect positively on the memories of the video, but not on the regrout job! Grouting is my second least favorite job. Regrouting like this is the worst. This was for some friends or I would not have done it!

    This was a great video and helped me to grout a few tiles in the house I purchased that needed it. However, during the process of cleaning out the grout lines, the tool I was using slipped out of the crack and added a nice scratch to my floor. I wasn't really expecting it to do that or I would have been a little more careful. Nevertheless, any tips on potentially buffing it out or, at the very least, reducing the severity of the scratch? Thanks so much again for the helpful video. You definitely helped me do this myself!

      Thanks, Fanatic! I appreciate you watching as this was the first video I ever did and am surprised I had a couple of comments on it on the same day recently. I had the same experience of losing my line on the grout joints and scratching the tile in a few places. It wasn't that big of a deal in my case because it was an actual stone floor so cracks and imperfections are part of its character. I could just enlarge or modify them a little and fill them with grout to make them blend in with other imperfections. If it's a porcelain tile that you have scratched, that's a little different because the glaze of the tile is damaged. In that case, I don't have good suggestions apart from replacing the entire tile itself. You only have that option if there were leftover tiles from the original installation.

      I have an idea: Some clear top coat nail polish just over the raw scratch.
      You should first play with the nail polish on some rocks, or similar texture item to get a sense of how much product to leave for some gloss, and how much to wipe off with a clean cloth.

    Great video, I have the exact travertine what color is the grout you used for this ?

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think it was a Mapei grout from Lowes, Tina, and was a basic off white or light beige color. Any of those grouts in that color range will work fine with this tile. Good luck! That was my least favorite job to ever do!

    Thank you for the video. Great. What is the product you use to seal the grout is the enhance and seal that is used for the travertine tile as well? Thank you

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a basic natural stone type sealer by Mapei that I bought from Lowes, Mari. Nothing special. Almost like a water type consistency but has some type of silicone water repellant as a part of its ingredients.

    Hello
    I have some grouting to do , is it better to regrout the entire area or just where the grout is damaged ?
    Hopefully I can get away with just the damaged areas

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can start with the areas that are damaged, AO, and see how it looks. You can always continue on if you think you need to. Often you see the improvement the new grout brings and decide to do the whole floor! 😬 Good luck!

    Very helpful Rusty! I've just started cleaning out the old grout this evening. Question: Should I reseal my travertine floor before I grout? It hasn't been sealed since it was installed 6 years ago.

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You certainly could. When you regrout, it should help the grout on the surface of the tile to release easier during cleanup. But, it's probably not going to make a big difference either way. Good luck, Jeff. Don't envy you.

    Is this something we should be doing on a regular basis? We've been in this home for 8 years, and just had it professionally done for the first time lst year when we installed matching tile in another room. But it seems I should be scraping, adding, and sealing my grout like, what, yearly??

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s kind of up to you, Valerie, on how often you want to do this. As you know, floor grout joints will darken over time from normal use and cleaning. A freshly grouted floor always looks better than one that’s not. It just depends on how much you want to spend to keep it looking great. The function is not affected by re-grouting at all.

  • @XER239

    do you need to clean and reseal the stone tile before regrouting?

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally speaking without looking at the tile, I would say, yes, that would be a good idea.

  • @riaku4444

    How big was the area you regrouted and how long did it take?
    I need to do my kitchen floor and not sure if I need to do it in stages (one section at at time) or just attack the entire floor.

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was actually about 2,000 square feet and took around a week, probably 50 hours! Glad to say I have done another one since! Whatever method works best for you and your back, knees, etc. Sometimes changing up the routine to break up the monotony helps because it is a boring process! Looks good when it's done though.

      Same thought, maybe grout was coming out? Idk if grout doesn’t need to be replaced he could just have color sealed the grout

    I am sorry if I missed it but what material did you use for the grout itself? Thanks

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is just a standard sanded grout that is available at any store that sells tile products, Christina. In this case, it is a Biscuit colored grout that I got from Lowe’s and is manufactured by Mapei.

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the amount and type of tile, Greta. This is the most tedious and worst job I can think of, but it does look nice when it is done. I think I charged $2,000 for this job and vowed that would be the last regrout I would do! 😬

    Although this is 6 ago, the grout work looks GREAT! The tile itself looks dated... how quickly styles change!
    And grouting IS extremely mind numbing and tedious work!

      Totally relate, David! This was actually my first TH-cam video, so I appreciate you watching. This was for friends and it was a lot of tile. Most miserable 10 days I spent in decades except for learning to shoot footage in the process. Can't remember the last regrout I did before this one and this one was definitely my last!

    Not a good idea using metal tools on a natural stone surface.....there are hardened plastic grout removing tools available.....this is wrong !

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a terrible job to take on, Mark! It was about 2000 square ft., took me about a week and I haven’t done one since. Yes, you have to be careful with whatever tools you are using to remove the grout. If a tool is hardened enough (plastic or not) to remove sanded grout, it would also damage the travertine tile in this video if you were not careful.
