I always liked this generation S80 for its restrained and elegant looks that are unlike the German competition and this Yamaha-developed V8 with the custom exhausts makes it even more appealing. Great sound!

Can disagree. Yes, they sound loud and somewhat brutal but become boring to hear quickly. There's no special vibe in these like in v10s or I-5s. I'd prefer a boosted JZ or RB any day.

Swedish cars are something else really. I currently have a Saab 9-5 wagon with built 2.3L engine, pushing quite conservative 330hp as it's a daily. As I have a family on it's way, I would love S80 V8 or XC70 T5/6 as a second car.

I don't think that Volvo have the guts to do that anymore. Reality shows that they don't and they won't. Only 4-cyl 2.0l engines. Shame! But we still have Mercedes-Benz, Jeep and some others to choose from. Volvo is gone in my opinion. However, they may still come up with something like full electrification. God knows what they can do with the help of Chinese capital.
Unfortunately it was never a very popular vehicle here in Uruguay, I am a friend of the Multimotors staff (importers of Volvo) until 2 years ago, they had a 2007 D5, they never managed to sell it, the s80 was too expensive, here only came under demand, that The unit was for a wealthy veteran, who had ordered it, but during the order until arriving in the country, the guy died and had only paid the entrance fee. I looked inside and out, and it is in an absolutely perfect state of conservation, only 894km. At the time it cost 85,000 dollars, but according to the staff of the company, who`s came with 50000 in hand, fast and easy to take it (but that was 2 years ago, I do not know if they still sold it) but I know if I won in the lottery, not to mention it would be mine, may be 2007 but it is a beautiful car. From 99 until the time it was made only sold between 15 to 20 units here, it is a very rare car around here !!!
Wow, this is making the S80 really unique there. But that's the story of some markets where there is no deep involvement of the "mother-company" and only local importers work. They do the job but on a small scale. The fact is that this is a very nice car indeed. Very elegant.

Interesting but I think that there's a lot of truth in that. If you mean the last V70 R, then I wouldn't be so sure if it actually driver very well. I have some experiences with an S60 (2001) and its suspension was an absolute crap - the loudest thing in the world. Otherwise would give a comfy feeling but at the end not at all. Build quality inside was also not very good with handles that you could break with your hand. However, if you're talking about the "classic" V70 that was introduced after 850 model, then that may be a different story.
Have a 2006 XC90 V8 AWD - bought it upon the birth of our 2nd baby.... for the last 13 yrs it’s been the car our nanny drives and in which I carry my 4 dogs. Now also have a 2019 XC90 AWD Inscription.
Shame they don't put a V8 into the new XC90. At least this would give it proper character. However, I heard that the T8 hybrid can give a proper kick. Hope you enjoy the new one.
Sounds like some of the trucks around here, I prefer a bit more crackle in the exhaust note. This is still pretty great though, not to mention this car doesn't look like it should make those sounds.

I'm very happy that you like it. It took a while to tune the sound properly. Yes, to tune the sound sice we were working on it to get the perfect note (perfect in my perception of course). I'm glad others like it too.
Old 850 R and later S60 T5 and R was my dream car. And now, I own one of my dram car Volvo s60 T5 MY2009 (P2 platform) :) And I am so happy. Maybe one time I will buy S80 V8 too :)
S80 V8 seems like the last solid car from Volvo. Except for its gearbox perhaps. But at least it had something that was making it different - a crazy, extremely-quickly-responding V8. Now these Volvos are all the same with the same engines and even interiors. Cheers mate!

Yes, it’s a crossplane V8. But it’s not any old crossplane V8. Unlike a typical crossplane V8, this one has a 60 degree bank angle rather than a 90 degree bank angle to make it more compact. This necessitates that the crankshaft have split crankpins to maintain a crossplane V8 firing order (and sound). Unfortunately, it also means that the engine does not have the great balance of a 90 degree crossplane V8. This forced Yamaha to add a balance shaft in the vee, which was stupidly open to the elements. This turned out to be the achilles heel of this engine, and caused many failures. I’m not sure if there is an available balance shaft delete to eliminate this problem.

If you still have a V8 XC90, I assume it's the older model. Man I loved those XC90's!!! One of the better looking SUV's to me. Loved it when Volvo was still all about quality.
You cannot find such an exhaust but you can build one just as I did. That's the only option that makes sense. All these ready-made exhaust do not sound in a nice way. It needs to be custom and done in a way that you will like it.

im confused on your exhuast setup in your description. SO you have primary cats, no resonator/mid muffler, no secondary cats and custom muffler? ALso did you replace the mid muffler with a xpipe or straight pipe?
Yes, first set of cats is there, then second set of cats is gone, no mid muffler (this was unnecessary to remove) and two custom rear mufflers. The mid muffler is replaced by a straight pipe/pipes - I don’t remember exactly at the moment.
These are custom-made mufflers. If you're looking to get some better sound, then I my advise to only change the two rear mufflers as they influence the sound the most. you don't need to anything else with this car to achieve fantastic results in terms of sound.

Jak oceniasz 4.4 w S80 ? Sam szukam jakiejś fajnej S80 AWD i sam nie wiem co wybrać żeby była radość z jazdy i nie był to co chwilę mniejszy czy grubszy remont
Silnik jest bajka. Na skrzynię trzeba uważać i najlepiej, aby miała już wymieniony/wymieniany olej. Poza tym jak każde inne auto. Byle bez zawieszenia Four-C, bo to jest kosztowna sprawa jak przychodzi do wymiany amortyzatorów. Chyba że nie planuje się autem tak dużo jeździć, a amory są całkiem sprawne i świeże, to można śmiało polatać machiną trochę. Nie obiło mi się o uszy, aby ktokolwiek, kiedykolwiek cokolwiek musiał robić z tym silnikiem. Tylko przed zakupem dobry test skrzyni trzeba zrobić - aby wyczuć czy działa ok.

I recently went out in my Brother's S60 2.4 diesel, what a great sounding car.
I believe that a 2.4 might still be a good old 5-cylinder engine. Great sound, good reliability and a fantastic character.

Trzeba by to sprawdzić w instrukcji obsługi. Wydaje mi się, że ja wymieniałem co 10 lub 15 tys. km.
Myślałem ze w silnikach v8 wymienia się częściej olej.

im confused on your exhuast setup in your description. SO you have primary cats, no resonator/mid muffler, no secondary cats and custom muffler? ALso did you replace the mid muffler with a xpipe or straight pipe?
Yes, first set of cats is there, then second set of cats is gone, no mid muffler (this was unnecessary to remove) and two custom rear mufflers. The mid muffler is replaced by a straight pipe/pipes - I don’t remember exactly at the moment.

These are custom-made mufflers. If you're looking to get some better sound, then I my advise to only change the two rear mufflers as they influence the sound the most. you don't need to anything else with this car to achieve fantastic results in terms of sound.

Jak oceniasz 4.4 w S80 ? Sam szukam jakiejś fajnej S80 AWD i sam nie wiem co wybrać żeby była radość z jazdy i nie był to co chwilę mniejszy czy grubszy remont
Silnik jest bajka. Na skrzynię trzeba uważać i najlepiej, aby miała już wymieniony/wymieniany olej. Poza tym jak każde inne auto. Byle bez zawieszenia Four-C, bo to jest kosztowna sprawa jak przychodzi do wymiany amortyzatorów. Chyba że nie planuje się autem tak dużo jeździć, a amory są całkiem sprawne i świeże, to można śmiało polatać machiną trochę. Nie obiło mi się o uszy, aby ktokolwiek, kiedykolwiek cokolwiek musiał robić z tym silnikiem. Tylko przed zakupem dobry test skrzyni trzeba zrobić - aby wyczuć czy działa ok.
