He’s been wrong about Vizio Tvs in the past Saying stuff like no TV has VRR 120hz working at the time when Vizio was working fine with Local dimming enabled
Man your explanation on the cables was on point. I had ordered 2 HDMI 2.1 cables for my Series X and PS5. They needed to be about 10ft or longer because they have run through the wall since my TV is mounted. And when they came in I was wondering why there were so thick. I've being trying to find answers as to why they were so thick and you answered it.
My new favorite channel! This video saved me buying a new TV because I felt I was missing out. The clear, easy to understand explanation and delivery method is 2nd to none. Keep it up!
Most of these arguments made sense when there was a big price difference in cables. But now for the lengths I need (~6ft) the difference between the basic 2.0 cable from Monoprice and the 2.1 in-wall rated cable is like $2-$3. Given that it's not the easiest thing to do to run the cable through the wall, I'd rather just get the 2.1 cable and know that I'm covered for the next 10+ years.
Excellent thanks for great advice. I ordered the optical hdmi 2.1 Ruipro 33ft. Currently using 25ft hdmi 2.0 copper from Denon AVR to LG 65" CX Edit: since received the 33ft Ruipro, works fine without the active usb power. Ordered a 2nd 33ft optical hdmi to run through floor to basement PC.
Thank you. What a thorough, easy to understand explanation shared. Had been looking at various vids for hours and this cleared up every question I had. Being non-tech savvy, I hoped 2.1s would give some enhancements but learned in my applications they won’t. Thankfully the 2.1s I already purchased were not expensive at all.
I had no idea eARC was unnecessary for streaming ATMOS from TV all this time. Saving me some cash on cables... thank you for the knowledge share and tips you provide!
I just bought the ZesKit 2.1 cables because they weren’t that expensive, and now I know I’m set for any hardware upgrades or technical improvements in the coming years.
Thanks for this. I went overboard trying to research all of this last night after purchasing a QN90A and Senn Ambeo (my old tv is some Samsung I got in 2011)
You have saved me from upgrading my tv as i have ARC and not eARC I use streaming services to watch content with Dolby Atmos. Great informative video regarding the tech.
I have qn95a 2021 model tv and hwq990c, initially I was using premium high speed hdmi (2.0). Since I switched to Ultra high speed hdmi (2.1), I definitely hear the difference. So in my case it does seem to make sense to go for 2.1
Great rundown on HDMI cables. I've got a couple 10ft copper rui pro ultra high speed cables and then some other cheaper 6ft ultra high speed cables. It's nice to be able to run diagnostics on my own cables with my Denon AVR to test their speed.
You always inform us about what the deal is with the things we think we need. 2.0 HDMI is good enough for most people and you pointed that out. 2.1 you said is for a special purpose for certain situations and you also pointed that out. That's why I feel you are the best at the information you give to us.
Going back to the length of Cable runs and what is preferred and what works best I’ve been running 50 feet runs and copper wire 2.0 with no problems due to the fact that you can add junctions for boosters This is usually done for a splitter. May take a feed from a cable box to a splitter to multiple TVs in your home. Between the power of the splitter in the power of the TV I have yet to have any problems and if I do have a problems, a simple, USBHDMI power add this in that issue
I have a Sony bravia Oled TV, A80L 55”, Sonos arc and two sonos ones plus the sub, I also have the Sony UBP x800 m2 4K dvd player. To have better image and sound, is an HDMi 2.1 cable necessary? If so, what would be a good value for money? Thanks for the excellent content.
I don't know that I can trust monoprice anymore. That LTT video showing how often the monoprice cables failed was depressing. I know it wasn't for all cables. It just seemed to indicate either terrible incompetence for quality control of their brand products, or willful dishonesty.
Thank you. I am moving and buying a whole new TV and AV setup. The AV landscape has changed so much since I was last purchasing (7 years ago). Great video.
A couple use cases not illustrated and very important. If you are going to fish a longer cable for a projector for gaming, you need it to be long, you need to be flexible, you need to have a head connector to go through 3/4in or 20mm and you want to futureproof because it can be quite a hassle to run/fish that cable. The RUIPRO has a head of only 0.69in which is perfect.
EARC has its place if you are going from HDMI 2.1 TV with Xbox Series X/PS5 to say a a pre 2021 receiver EARC 2.0b like stated. 120hz framerate direct to TV, that way with lossless ATMOS to the receiver or storage files with lossless. Also your TV as a switch could have a use case with upconversion, it works better with TV than receiver, and less in the chain for degradation. You can still run legacy 2.0 devices (4k bluray, etc), component/RGB, and composite connections through your receiver as a switch. TV/Projector will always have the latest connection upgrades way before a receiver as well. Didn't get HDMI 2.1 until this year in receivers and most didn't do it right and need an external box.
Thanks, I needed this information, I was on the fence on getting a new reciever with eArc. I decided to take the jump since I have a 4k blu ray player, PS5, and PC.
HDMI 2.1 cables are relatively inexpensive these days. So you might as well just upgrade to those cables instead of 2.0. It’s getting to the point where there’s not much difference between both versions in price.
I don't know how it was back then when this video was posted but Netflix does have Dolby TrueHD when I'm using it on my Xbox Series X. Also Sony Core has DTS-X as well.
There is still alot of confusion on eArc and hdmi 2 vs 2.1. I ordered both and am going to do a test. One of the big applications for using eArc is having an older av reciver that is non HDR and does not support eArc. I bought an orei eArc sound stripper that will allow me to take my audio via eArc and strip the audio into an hdmi port on reciver. Blue ray, direct TV, and eArc are running to TV for best picture and audio is returning uncompressed for blue ray and dlna server which has 7.1 true HD sources. Will see if it works.. It will cost a few hundred but much better option than dropping 3k on a new av just for video and support of HDR
Wow, this guy made me look at cables entirely different from what I thought cables were. Thank you so much , I wrote down this info so when I go to Best buy, I'm well armed with info to buy cables for my new LG OLEd 65 inch TV. Thank you very much. Robert C
This is EXACTLY what I wanted to know. I have an Lg C1 4K Oled tv coming, but I am using a ten yer old BD player to show my movies on. I didn't know if I need the 2.1 cable or not. thank you for clearing that up. I will stay with my 2.0 HDMI cable. ❤
Caught a mistake at 13:53 . The chart you showed says eARC has optional lip sync correction and ARC has mandatory lip sync correction where as you just said the opposite.
Good info. In regards to EARC, I like to plug my 4K Blu-ray player directly into the TV so it has its own input for picture settings. If you plug it into your AVR with your game consoles, then you have to share picture settings, or change them.
EARC is noticeably better, even when streaming. I didn’t even know what earc was until I turned it off. It maybe not be true HD Dolby but there’s definitely an improvement.
Great video. Im in the edge use case and I can say hes right. But in defense of eARC. Hes right that most technology is years away from fully supporting the advantages eARC brings. However, today PS5 also supports VRR (Like the Xbox SX) via update so its starting to become more relevant overall. And again, he right that most games will not be played at 4k 120HZ. But most next gen games will have the option from going quality mode with VRR which is 4k 40FPS vs 2k 80-100FPS. VRR is absolutely essential for this. Most soundbars/AV receivers HDMI pass throughs DO NOT support 120FPS and/or VRR even if they support HDMI 2.1. So having eARC allows you to maintain max graphics that your shiny new hardware is capable of while sending the uncompressed surround sound audio through the tv to the soundbar. But this is an expensive setup. TVs that support 4k 120HZ are usually over a grand. And soundbars with enough speakers that can fully support 7.1 uncompressed audio are over a grand as well. Lastly youd need to get a device like a blu ray player or a ps5/xbox series x that can actually provide the content.
So, if I wanted to connect a XSX to my TV via HDMI 2.1, would it be enough to then use a HDMI 2.0 cable from the TVs eARC to the AVR? The goal would be to game at 4k 120 and still use my dedicated home theater system, which by itself doesn’t support HDMI 2.1, so connecting the XSX directly to the AVR wouldn’t be an option.
Good stuff! That's why I bought the Vizio M8 2 years ago so I could have it all (Atmos via eARC) (HDR10 +) (DVision) at a budget price compared to Sony and Sammy who didn't even have all that.
Amy Samsung models for the past 5 years supports HDR10+. Older set will require and update to enable it. LG is going down the Atmos and DolbyVision path. I guess they worked out a licensing deal they can live with. Samsung and Sony just does not want to be paying Dolby any money.
I started watching your content to help me decide which OLED TV to buy, and have done that (I went with the Sony Bravia A80J 55"), but your content remains so interesting and informative that I keep watching (and have subscribed to your TH-cam channel of course). I would nit-pick your recommendation for gaming "locked at 4K 60Hz" - VRR can still matter since some of the frames will take longer to produce and drop below the 60FPS (60Hz) mark, and in that case VRR can help smooth out your experience. You would need the game to have 1% (and .1%) lows that remain at or above 60Hz to make it so VRR doesn't matter, and I don't think there are many games that will run, even on the best hardware available today, that will never drop below 60 FPS at 4K. (Obviously my choice of TVs wasn't based on gaming - I have a different setup for that - but for those buying with gaming in mind I'd personally recommend getting a TV with a GOOD VRR implementation.)
My new Epson 3800 can handle both simulated 4k and 8K (even though there is currently no content available to view). But being I am going to have to pay someone to run my in-wall cable through my attic above my home cinema room, I am going with the HDMI 2.1 48Gbps 8K 25ft. cable so I am future proofed! I'm too old to be gaming, therefore I don't really see a need for the higher priced active fiber cable.
Some games on PS5 offer vrr in the performance options. It may not be required for ps5 to specifically support "vrr" if it can be accomplished through the game itself.
My TCL 55P605, will not pass Dolby Atmos from my new AppleTV to my receiver through the regular ARC. The TV has build in Roku, and it will pass Atmos to the receiver using the apps I have on the TV. I guess I’ll see if the new TV with eARC will do any better. It arrives tomorrow. Love your videos.
i got a aq carbon 2.0 4ft works very well on my CX & Ps5 it can can most of 2.1 can do, is hard to replace it because i purchased it too expensive. love the topic😎
@Fomo. Do you see any problem running 4K data over 10ft hdmi 2.1 cables .. other than it’s not necessary. Meaning, will the 4K signal struggle over the 2.1 cable? Thanks
@Fumo, Yeah companies are making 6’ or 10’. I’ve been searching for 9 feet in my favorite cables 10 of the best I can do I’m returning to 13 feet that I have not opened yet.
There is a mistake in Gaming 4K/60 HDR. It reads that HDMI 2.0 supports 4:4:4 12-bit. This is not truth. Image 4K/60 12-bit 4:4:4 needs 24 Gbps of bandwidth, which is HDMI 2.1 speed. Please correct this. Maximum HDMI 2.0 support over 4K/60 is 4:4:4 8 -bit or 4:2:2 12-bit, both of which need 18 Gbps.
Great Video really helped with my decision making to buy a new TV I think I will go the Sony XR master 83 inch OLED now, I was worried it only had eARC and 1x 2.1 hdmi input only have a PS5 to plug into it and the 4K Apple TV so we will be just fine and they have a awesome price on it at the moment so I’ll get that one. Cheers
I use Audioquest HDMI cables for years and I never had a problem. They sell cable for long runs and you pay for a premium cable with lifetime warranty but it doesn’t break and the video and sound quality is phenomenal.
so if i have various components and only have 2 hdmi ports and 1 earc port on my soundbar do i need to buy a hdmi switch box if i more than 2 devices for my soundbar? and if yes which do you recommend? thanks
Another great informative video! Currently utilizing the internal apps on my A8H OLED SONY tv. Would the APPLE 4KTV purchase improve the quality of the audio & picture significanlty enough to justify the addition? Currently have the SONOS arc system connected via eARC , which I just learned from you, it does not make any difference for the audio. Julio
Great! You are so informative... Now question?? What cables to get for my new Hisense U8H tv I just purchased. Picture quality is amazing! But which HMDI of the 2 do I plug in - eARC or HDDI 2,1? Thanks so much man. Happy New Years!
Tv does not send more current in a long cable. Its the signal/noice ratio that get worse. If anything if cable resistance is bigger, I=V/R means less current not more. Also when in fibre extend the length as long as you want almost. E.g. 100m should be no problem. Otherwise good info on hdmi cables.
I see active or aoc cables, but the description notes does not require external power. You state use active so you don't strain the equipments power supply. Can you explain? Also, I don't see any aoc fiber hdmi with a separate power source. The one you show is the type I described. Power is from hdmi port. Please list some hdmi fiber cables with external pwr source.
Dosent earc enable 5.1 and 7.1 .. does earc need hdmi 2.1? Some say you need an hdmi cable with Ethernet in it(Samsung)… also the lg c1 has feature to use tv speakers with a sound bar or wisa does that require earc and 2.1?
Thanks for the video I saved I few bucks because I was going to buy 8k hdmi for my Apple TV 3rd generation and it was pointless,I noticed that I have 1.4 high sped hdmi right now and when I am watching Netflix or hbo max it suddenly shuts down, I suppose is because of the 1.4 hdmi,I have it plugged to a Samsung tv ru8000 model
Am i doing my sony no Justice by using a 1080p soundbar on a 4k tv? And doesnit reduces resolution to 1080p via the soundbar connected through hdmi with hdmi 2.0 cables

So I got a Q90A recently and I am also trying to get audio set up in the next couple months (new aprt) I am planning on getting a ps5(disk for bluray functionality) and have a high end PC. I have been thinking about getting the HW-Q900A or Q950A some time early next year for the gaming surround features. I am also planning to buy a new turntable(thinking Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo) for the vinyls I have been collecting and am trying to figure out if there is a viable way to set up my vinyl playback in a way where playing from the Q900 would make sense from a sound quality perspective or if I would just be better served buying a more traditional speaker set up and using that for all my home audio needs.) are there amplifiers that would do well paired with such a high number of channels or is the audio coming off the vinyl just not engineered in a way where the sound bar surround system would handle them well? hope the question makes sense. I haven't been able to find much resources talking hifi connectivity to these new soundbar systems.
Hi please suggest which cable is good for me. I have 65inc android tv 4k@60hz+HDR. I wan to connect from my pc that range between them up to 10meters. Question 1: So which cable should i buy for that length that able to full support of my tv specification? Question 2: Will optic cable 2.0 18gb 15meters length support? Question 3: if i buy 2.1 48gb optic cable, does my tv support since it model only come with 2.0 hdmi port. And might had compatibilty problem to connect as well? @@ChumpyChicken2 that was an update from a few weeks ago. The vrr part wasn't for the a80j or a90j or x90j or x95j it was for the x85j though they just threw it in there in the specifications of the update. The new uodate fixed posterization at 4k 120 hdr to a point, it also fixed the color space mapping on the sony tvs. It also seems to of fixed the near black issue. is it possible to get uncompressed dolby atmos with a tv (arc) receiver (earc) and ps5? basically im ok with upgrading my receiver at the moment but not my tv.
I’m going crazy here. So the vivify 2.0 cable is active or isn’t active? I just ordered it in a 50 ft length but now I’m looking at it and I can’t figure out if it’s active or not. I thought in the video it said you need an active cable?
My qn90a has only one earc hdmi and im using bose 900 for that, but if i use apple tv im not getting e arc dolby atmos sound anymore when watching on apple tv? Am i right?
Hi, fantanstic video. Very informative. I got a sound bar HWQ850A (that you mentioned in your best budget sound bar). I find that the rear surround channels are very week (+6) and the same for the top firing channels (+6). Have you heard that and some suggestions to fix it. Second, what do you think about Q symphony? Is it worth it? Thanks
How tall are your ceilings? Anything more than 8 or 10 ft Vaulted/High ceilings wont work with Up-firing speakers or ATMOS "toppers" on top of your fronts. You will need dedicated down-firing ATMOS speakers mounted to your front / back walls to be able to get the best sound. Bouncing audio signal off the ceiling losses a LOT of sound in a very short distance. SVS Prime Elevations are good if you want to go that route.
Hey, I’ve found a cable from goobay that is 10 meters, hybrid optical whatever that is, no usb. Will that actually work with my tv that is 6 meters away? As I’ve tried so many cables and they lose signal.
Fomo is right, I took my 8k 10 foot back because Picture start looking funny and I always had to restart the Xbox series X. I got a 6 1/2 foot and no problem. However, in theory I cant mount my TV. :(
I have a Yamaha Yas-108 sound bar whose loan bragging point is that it has DTS X. Yet, no where on the soundbar or any of the information does it say it has eARC, just ARC. If that's the case, are we really getting the DTS X sound out of it or was this just a marketing scam. Are other sound bars doing the same thing where they talk about supporting a certain sound codec but they don't actually give you the HDMI capable of it?
May be off topic, but... Is it possible to plug a HDMI cable from a projector ARC to a soundbar eARC or do both have to be the same...ARC to ARC and eARC to eARC❓️

He made it clear that is the one exception where you would want 2.1
Thanks for clearing that up. Almost spent way to much.
Old tech!
Name the games? Interested to see if this is true.

Yes!! you just saved me about $1000.00! . . . nevermind that A90J, I'm off to Walmart to grab that 70in. ONN!!! 🎉📺💫👀
It must be true. I read that your hands are invisible, and you wear gloves so we can see your hands. Love your content!!
I read that arc only supports up to 5 1... what about 7.1 and above?
i got a aq carbon 2.0 4ft works very well on my CX & Ps5 it can can most of 2.1 can do, is hard to replace it because i purchased it too expensive. love the topic😎
My Series X with Samsung qn85a 4k 120hz vrr is amazing. My soundbar is eARC compatible and enhances my gaming experience.
I am an edge case lol
Thanks dude this confirmed my thoughts I need minimum a 15ft hdmi 2.1 cable to run from my lg cx to my pc I'm going to have to reconsider things lol.
No, digital is either on or off. What you pay for may be a more robust cable. That's it.
so if i have various components and only have 2 hdmi ports and 1 earc port on my soundbar do i need to buy a hdmi switch box if i more than 2 devices for my soundbar? and if yes which do you recommend? thanks
great video cleaning up all the myths
If you have a soundbar, use eARC, otherwise any HDMI port works. Cable recommendation is Anker amzn.to/3YT1saf
Just doing audio from earc port, can a regular hdmi cable support this?
Dosent earc enable 5.1 and 7.1 .. does earc need hdmi 2.1? Some say you need an hdmi cable with Ethernet in it(Samsung)… also the lg c1 has feature to use tv speakers with a sound bar or wisa does that require earc and 2.1?
You really liked how the relaxing end TH-cam channel uses the white gloves huh?
Thanks for the video I saved I few bucks because I was going to buy 8k hdmi for my Apple TV 3rd generation and it was pointless,I noticed that I have 1.4 high sped hdmi right now and when I am watching Netflix or hbo max it suddenly shuts down, I suppose is because of the 1.4 hdmi,I have it plugged to a Samsung tv ru8000 model
Have a Samsung HW-Q90R soundbar and don’t think it passes Dolby Vision so I plug 4K bluray player into TV for DV and use eARC for Dolby True HD
Thats right, Samsung products don't support Dolby Vision. But they fall back to HDR10 (+).
Am i doing my sony no Justice by using a 1080p soundbar on a 4k tv? And doesnit reduces resolution to 1080p via the soundbar connected through hdmi with hdmi 2.0 cables
Hi I am Jamie I have a Tanggula 4GB 128GB and it has 8k and I game on it and I stream watching TV and movies on it what should I use 2,0 or 2.1 I love your videos keep up the good work bro what would you say is the best modem is arris surfboard good one and what would you say about Linksys Max
Thanks FOMO. I just bought the 85" X95J, waiting for delivery. Being that I don't game, I just ordered the Vivify cables you recommend. Hope I understood you correctly?
HDMI 2.0 cable
How about Dolby vision? I have a HDBaseT hdmi 2.0 but it does not seem to support earc or dolby vision..
Good stuff FOMO. Thanks for the helpful charts!
Have you checked if EARC Atmos works in optical at 20 meters? The return channel is copper and I am not sure it works for 20 meters..
My grandfather's VPN was the Cone Of Silence.

A new hdmi 2.1a is next in 2022 and will likely create more confusion over standards used in tv and audio.

My pc spec: ryzen 3600 32gb ram rtx 3070. PSU 750W GOLD.
Please do a video on the new Support for the A90J in a update today.
New support? What update? I own an a90j
@@reviewforthetube6485 VVR support and something for the PS5… I’ll look for it.
They snuck soem good fixes in there imo it helped. I've also noticed that content is much more consistent imo. Also it gave us thw auto tone mapping feature for the ps5 but yeah that was weeks ago. is it possible to get uncompressed dolby atmos with a tv (arc) receiver (earc) and ps5? basically im ok with upgrading my receiver at the moment but not my tv.
I’m going crazy here. So the vivify 2.0 cable is active or isn’t active? I just ordered it in a 50 ft length but now I’m looking at it and I can’t figure out if it’s active or not. I thought in the video it said you need an active cable?
This was really useful so thank you, just saved me wasting money 👍
That was an oversimplification.
@@sjsphotog 8ft ceiling
Hey, I’ve found a cable from goobay that is 10 meters, hybrid optical whatever that is, no usb. Will that actually work with my tv that is 6 meters away? As I’ve tried so many cables and they lose signal.
If you only have a 5.1 AV Receiver doesn't seem like you need eARC. Also why does eArc require network version of HDMI Cable?
Fomo is right, I took my 8k 10 foot back because Picture start looking funny and I always had to restart the Xbox series X. I got a 6 1/2 foot and no problem. However, in theory I cant mount my TV. :(
You did stop my FOMO !!
I’m debating on moving my Apple TV to the Sony oled and have the tv send the audio to the AVR
Can you use hdmi 2.0 for dolby atmos or you need 2.1?
Now that you help me with cables can you please do a video about AVR to get for HT new to this stuff.
Dear Fomo thank you for excellent explanation. You clear my mind from all the questions l had.. you are best..

May be off topic, but... Is it possible to plug a HDMI cable from a projector ARC to a soundbar eARC or do both have to be the same...ARC to ARC and eARC to eARC❓️
It should work fine. Earc is just higher bandwidth for higher quality sound and video
