    Great advice. It works. Two quick supplemental thoughts. 1) plan a route that gives you bail out points, if you need one. 2) as much as may be possible, ride with the wind at your back ... more so in the last 30 miles. Thanks so much!

    This is great!! I'm going to use this video to prepare for the next Century!!
    My first century, at mile 80, I wanted throw my Cannondale off a bridge. LOL Mile 85, I got my head back in the game. Mile 90, I accepted that I was gonna be on the bike forever. Mile 101. I was thinking about doing another Century. I did my first Century in 6.5 hours. Maybe next time it can be 5.5hrs.
    Rest and proper nutrition really helped me on that ride along with training. It also helped I took the day off from work before the ride.

      They will definitely test you mentally, more so than physically. But you did it. Keep rocking

    I've only run a mountain (i.e. trail) marathon and I consider i ran it well and it was in large part thanks to my cycling training, as I'd ridden 100 km, 160 km, 200 km a few times.

      @@wege8409 Great ride. How LONG it took does not matter. People will ask "how long" then do the math in their head and judge you. You did a century and that is quite an accomplishment. Never let anyone diminish the achievement by suggesting it "took a long time" Just say it was a great ride.

    Well said. After riding 12 century rides in the last 5 months, I would say your video is spot on. Rest and nutrition are very important. The mental game is vital. Building yourself up definitely helps. I know some who attempt riding a century while never have ridden more than 50 miles. That is very challenging to say the least. Enjoyed your piece.

      Yes. I have seen a lot of unprepared efforts result in 10 hours + of riding time. Preparation and build up is key

      Did my first Century last month. I did not know the route was 25% gravel with some rolling hills. Finished in 8 hours😢

    Good tips on nutrition. May I add: 1) When eating and drinking on the bike, wait until you are in the back of the peloton, so that if you drop something, nobody behind you will run over it and crash. 2) You can carboload more comfortably (digestively speaking) by eating the big meal of carbs 2 days before instead of the night before. Glycogen is stored in the liver for more than 12 hours. But I don't really carboload any more. I just ensure to eat properly while riding.
    What you say about the first 60 and 40 miles is is very true! It is important to feel good during the middle of the ride, so relax and stay fueled.

    Did my first century today 120 miles in 8:30 hours. My neck upper back was stiff the last 40 miles :/ my previous longest session was 45 miles. Thanks for your videos they motivate me to ride 🚴🏽💨🌉

    Great video. I ride a recumbent racing trike…the Catrike 700 model and believe me it is so much easier on your hands, wrists ,neck, back and butt. Not as fast as a road bike . I’m retired and cycle 30 miles everyday and take off every fourth or fifth day for recovery or skip a day when weather is awful or I have plans that don’t allow ride time. On every birthday I ride my “birthday mileage “….. btw I’m 72 and have been doing this for about ten years. At the end of each month I ride a century on what looks like the best weather day. It takes me about 61/2-7 hours . I live on Cape Cod and we have fabulous long rail trails with virtually no traffic interaction so it’s safe. I pack OJ, Gatorade zero, PB and J , bananas and power bars. I do it alone as none of my cycling pals can do the deed. Several cycle 15-20 miles with me in intervals to keep me company. Earbuds and some great podcasts or music and I get it done. It’s not a race against time at my age. It’s simply guts and determination and being stubborn. Btw I come down to your neck of the wood for 4 months in the winter and I’ve seen your group several times. Your pace is a bit much for a guy my age but I can go the distance. If you see a fit old man in colorful Lycra on a bright yellow recumbent trike speeding along…it’s me. Stop and say hello. Your channel is great. Just rode the Pan Mass Challenge which raises money/ for Dana Farber Cancer Center at Mass General. Biggest fundraiser in the state. Raised over $50 million this year and bypassed $1 billion over the past 40 years. Did 84 miles from Bourne to Provincetown at the tip of the Cape Cod. 7 hours including three eating/hydration stops. Extremely hilly the last 15 miles going through Truro to P-town.

    Great video, terrific advice! The last 10-20 miles grueling but I always find extra juice as the end approaches. The 40-60 section is the toughest part for me mentally. As a practical matter, I learned the hard way that two water bottles might not be enough for an unsupported century unless you know in advance where you can refill. Really important to have that figured out in advance!

    Thanks a million! This is my next yr goal. This yr I am participating in 2 aqua bike races (1.2 mi swimming, 56 mi biking) and 1 gravel bike race 24 mi with 3000 ft climb in the mountains of colorado.

    You hit on the nail. Some the things you mentioned I can relate to. My first century last year the one big mistake I made is I had half the grocery store on me. My camel pack, and the pockets of my bib were full. I stopped alot to use the restroom. It was very interesting. It really is mental. When I got around mile 80 I hated cycling...lol. I just wanted to quit.

    I have been riding for seven years and while I can go long distances, have not attempted a century, so In some time, in September 2021 I am claiming my first century. Great video and tips.

    Always enjoy the solid advice in your videos. The part about your hands was great and not something that is commonly mentioned. One add is electrolytes during and after the ride. For me they help prevent muscle cramps during and after the ride.

      Miles 60-75 were tough but after that it was smooth sailing for the last 15 miles.

    I did a century and it was the last 10 miles that really got to me because I live near the mountains and the hills getting home.... Talk about acid burn in your legs.

    I do the monthly Strava 100km (62miles) Gran Fondo in usually 4hrs including 2500-3000ft elevation. Been wanting to do the 161km/100 miles but think I need to sort a couple of things. 1- my weight...need to be lighter so the additional time in the saddle doesn't become unbearable 2- find a route that's flatter which means going to the coast (I'm in the Scottish Highlands) 3- ideally get a route that has say 50 to 65% into the wind and a return for the last 35 to 50% with a tailwind.... I've done a few 100km indoor rides on RGT and fastest for a a flattish route (Borrego Springs) in 3hrs 20 so yes, adding altitude and wind IRL is significantly more difficult!! I need to maybe up that mileage to 120-130km before going for it too....

    On my recent century I ate 2 pieces of pizza, and ice cream sandwich, pb and j sandwich, small bag of cookies, 2 bananas, a bag of chips, a pickle.

    I’ve been training on my indoor trainer for 1-2 hrs also get outside and ride rolling hills for the same time. Any cons to training on an indoor trainer?

      For fitness, no cons. It's a great way to build structured training.
      However, there is no substitute for actually riding outside where you are using your entire body to control the bike👍🏾

    Right from the start I disagree with you. When you say a century SHOULD be done in 6 or 7 hours are you suggesting that one SHOULD maintain a constant speed of 15 -18 mph to "do it right"? Nonsense! I SAY take as much time as you need, enjoy the ride, start early and get home before the sun sets. If it takes 8, 10 or 12 hours you have done 100 miles in one day and that is quite an accomplishment.
