    Great advice Dustin. I did my first 100 mile ride last year at age 74 then another one this year. As you recommended in this video, riding a couple 50 to 60 mile trips within a few days then going for the 100 a couple days later is works for me.

      @@TheLazyTrucker Thank you for your comment. I wanted to ride a century for a few years prior but never made it. Just keep chipping away at that goal with 40, 50, 60 mile rides and listening to your body and you’ll know when it’s right to ride the 100. Good luck!

    I started using a Fanny pack after watching you and Ron sporting them nearly every ride. So comfortable. Don’t even notice it! And I wear it low like you so pockets are still available. Thanks Dustin.

    Good tips I wish I knew sooner. My first and only century was a huge group ride, without any prep other than some BMX at the park. Halfway through the guy infront of me crashed and I ran into him, then my chain broke on the climb and I crashed again. It was awesome!

    Good advice, Dustin. It all boils down to gradually increasing your ride lengths and working out the kinks as they come. The big thing for me was figuring out what to eat and drink, and how often.

    Your closing comment on gravel miles is beyond comprehension. Centuries on the road, fun, but easily doable. 100 on gravel is other world epic. My first gravel 100 was Unbound. Not my last, but definitely the most treasured one.

    Good stuff, DK. I remember my first Grizzly Peak Century starting/ending in the Berkeley Hills. My bike was ready, I was fit, but I screwed up my nutrition & cramped like crazy -- learned that lesson the hard way.

    LOLLLLLLLLL I feel that overprepare anxiety. The only time I go lean is on small training rides and I still toss stuff in my back pocket. Everything else its a overly stuffed burrito bag, half bag and spare tubes etc. My Beautiful 18 pound bike then becomes like 30 pounds haha cheers to another great vid!

  • @billhulley

    Great video 👍 Long rides aren't taxing it's basically administration, fixing the issues that stop you doing long rides one by one - bike reliability, all the bike fit issues, eating/drinking, clothing. Before too long 100 will become your training ride and you'll be chasing longer ones.

    Make A Wish ride. 300 mile in three days. Very well supported. Month before the ride put in at least 30-40 mile rides close to everyday. Rode a centaury in an organized ride before MAW ride to gauge my fitness. Apologized to my mtn bikes before leaving the garage. 😔 Ride was fun . Nice folks. Glad to finally get back riding single track

    quite enjoying your videos, well done! look, i frequently do 50-100km rides but i noticed that after 90-100 bum sore starts to kick in. is mostly pressure and not chafing. i think i have the right saddle and good bibs and im just wondering if its "normal" after 4-5 hours to have some disconfort anyways, or you shouldnt...thanks

    I did my first imperial century a couple years ago on a singlespeed ATB. It limited my ability to over-exert and made for a fantastic and comfortable day in the saddle. 12.8MPH which ain't blazin, but that wasn't my goal. It was frankly easy, and I'm gonna do it again.

    One other tip: Give yourself the best chance of success by choosing flat smooth roads. If possible, try to find a route where you will be riding with tail winds too.

  • @zimmejoc
    @zimmejoc ปีที่แล้ว

    I went to Clovis, NM and started riding toward Paulo Duro Canyon in Canyon, TX on a red flag day. A consistent 30mph tailwind along with dropping 1500ish feet over 100 miles made for a fast easy ride. So fast and so easy that yes I did 100 miles, but I don’t really count that as a real century 😂😂😂😂😂

    Lots of good advice in this video, but most of the century rides I've done over the last fifty years were accidental. I just went out for a ride and kept going. When I got home with 93 miles, I went an additional 3.5 mile out and back. If you're really a cyclist, the only thing you have to train is your mind. If you're planning on a time limit, a nutritional plan is mandatory.

  • @330_Crew
    @330_Crew ปีที่แล้ว

    I've done a couple 100s. The first 50 fly by. The next 25 you begin to bog down. The last 25 are a grind pushing till it's over.
    I've decided these long rides are not for me. The most I do now are metric centuries.

    Is it a possible bike fit problem if I can't do a century without a bib? That felt like the biggest necessity for me on my first century. Also digging the song on this one.

    • @robinheil
      @robinheil ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds normal to me. Most bike modern saddles are designed for padded bike shorts. But tensioned leather saddles, like the Brooks, were designed for old-school leather chamois shorts, which have less padding. So if you don't want to wear bibs, then you could try installing a leather saddle on your bike. You should also try using chamois cream if you haven't already. It really helps.
