    Getting away with serious crimes:
    Pre-1900: leave town.
    1900-1995: wipe prints and leave no witnesses.
    1996-2018: avoid surveillance cameras every 10 feet, don’t use cell phone or car, clean up crime scene and get rid of all physical evidence.

    She was my 5th grade teacher in 1990 and the loss of her life affected me in so many ways. Even today I watch this and grieve for her. She was such a special soul and made a huge impact on her student’s lives. I watched every minute of this trial online and just have extreme gratitude that some level of justice was served. Great job to the folks who worked so hard to take down her murderer.

Furthermore, if the investigation thought it was someone she knew, didn’t they question friends and people in Catherine’s life and then branch out from there? I don’t understand this. However, cudos to those people who did all the genealogy. They worked really hard and figured it out since the investigations didn’t focus on friends in Catherine’s present and past .

Only the victims know the real side of him. He never showed that side of him to his ex-wife. I’m sure we all hide things from our parents and they don’t even know half of the things we do even if we live in the same household.
      A rape allegation in those days didn’t mean much unless there’s concrete evidence. It could be mutually-agreed sex but the girl regretted the sex the next day. That’s of course not the case here. But his ex-wife didn’t know and so gave him the benefit of the doubt.

    How did he gave *probation* for *rape*? Were times really that different in the 80s? Did he have the world's best lawyer?

    • @Mataylor17
      @Mataylor17 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      Yes, times were much different. No dna. No rape kits. No sex registry. Rape and beating women wasn’t quite the big deal back then as it is now. It started changing in the 90s.

    • @jmbond6728
      @jmbond6728 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      Yep, and a lot of the thinking was, “oh, she just regretted it so she’s accusing him to make herself feel less guilty.” Men AND women believed that. And if a girl was SAed, she probably did something to deserve it or she lead him on.
      I had a friend who was assaulted in the early 80s, she told me she was walking home from high school basketball practice, in a baggy sweatsuit, no makeup, hair messy, covered in sweat. As she passed an alley, a guy grabbed her by her hair and yanked her off the sidewalk, she didn’t even know he was there. She was still grilled by the police, accused of provoking him in some way.
