  • In 1885, a single, sensational catch at Sanibel Island's Tarpon Bay made international news - and revolutionized sport fishing. For the first time on record, a mighty, silver-sided tarpon was taken on a rod and reel, a feat that created a frenzy for the fierce-fighting - and made Southwest Florida the epicenter of a brand-new sport.
    The newly crowned Silver King of fish lured celebrities and presidents, and transformed Southwest Florida into the birthplace of big game fishing.

    I remember my favorite book as a kid
    “Wondrous World of Fishes”
    There was a chapter devoted to the Tarpon and one photo captivated me the most .
    It was a big Tarpon launching itself into the air and I never thought I’d be so lucky as to catch and land one. But decades later while live baiting for King Macks on the end of Avon pier
    my dream came true. Just as I was about to reel up and head for home a 5 footer slid into view on its side and opened its mouth , sucking my live Spot in like a vacuum. I nearly shit my pants from excitement 😂. I set the hook before it even had a chance to pop my release clip . Jump after amazing jump , backflips , writhing somersaults. I was almost in a panic thinking it was surely going to throw my hooks , but it never did. We netted the prehistoric leviathan and released it quickly , taking no more than a minute to unhook it and snap a photo. Unfortunately it did not appear to make it. It was bleeding from its gill profusely because the wire had gotten behind its gill when it changed direction during the last few minutes of the battle. Still my most memorable moment of fishing .
    Tarpon are an extra special catch from any pier this far north of Florida and it felt like I won the lottery that day

    This is a very informative video,it not only shows the history of tarpon fishing and sport fishing , but the historical growth of Florida as a state and tourist destination, as an avid fly fisherman in Florida and seeing the equipment that people used back then has currently got me collecting a few antique rods and reels just to remind myself what it was like back in the day, protecting our fisheries and estuaries for future fishermen and fisherwomen should be at the top of the list it’s part of state history and why Florida is the fishing capital of the world, keep it clean , use don’t abuse ! 👍

    I had no idea that it starts so early. I thought tarpon fishing become end vogue around 1970 with Billy Pate,Stu Apte and Flip Pallot

    Back then they kept everything they caught, thought they would last forever. Now you can't take the tarpon out of the water. Get your pictures but don't take him out of the water. It's really helped on their come back.

    If they're no good to eat, just leave them in peace. Please don't catch any fish just for fun, or sport. Do something else...

    • @jimmymulfort4384
      @jimmymulfort4384 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Why... if you release them unharmed its better then keeping a fish to eat and arguably more ethical. Also only fishing for fish can you can eat greatly disrupts the ecosystem when you have a mass exodus of only a few species, by not targeting inedible species with the same pressure.

      Why are you so soft ? It’s parts of life stop crying about it. You can’t change anything it’s the way of life. Don’t be stupid people love fishing and won’t stop because people are crying over nothing.
