I just had the privilege to meet James Prosek yesterday when I was metal detecting an old historic house in his neighborhood. The property owner told me that I should check him out on the internet cause he's an important guy. Indeed he is and I hope to be able to meet him again. As this video shows he is not only a great fisherman but a magnificent artist, naturalist, and writer that has a passion and reverence for life as exemplified by Izaak Walton himself when he said, "Study To Be Quiet." Beautifully filmed and narrated by the artist himself, his intimate revelations of the deeper personal inspiration he gains from trout fishing and the personal interviews with Irish and English notables make, "The Complete Angler" a must see for any lover of fishing. His award winning video expresses the reason why a contemplative trout fisherman loves fishing so much.
I was born in Winchester where Izaak Walton is buried, and used to sing in the Cathedral choir. His burial date is also my birthday as it happens. Just above Winchester the Piscatorial Society held an extensive complex of water on the River Itchen, where I used to help the keeper as much as I could. There I met some of the greats of modern day fishing, John Goddard, Sir Michael Horden, Richard Walker, and one of the truly magical anglers, Oliver Kite, with whom I spent many hours as he magically took fish after fish. His books are still very much relevant. When he died in 1968 I went to his funeral, and only yesterday (14/05/2019) returned to his grave for the first time. His headstone was almost obliterated by lichens, and so I returned later to clean it up, and to reveal his name once more. I just felt it was the right thing to do for someone so special. He was a delightful man. He is on utube and his dvd there is simply titled Oliver Kite, Fly Fisherman, exactly the wording on his headstone. On this delightful film it is stated that in the end fishing is about the people one meets. That was certainly true of Olly.
I remember Olly and his daughters, one of the river Test and Avon great fisherman, the man who could do 3 rolls, you will find a vid of him with Jack Hargreaves aboard G. Aston-Smith Boat N.D. Neptune Daughter out of Lymington
Thank you, thank you for this quiet interlude in my otherwise frustrating afternoon. My Dad also taught me the importance of studying to be quiet while fishing. I long for those simpler days. It does my heart good to know there are young people who are respectful and willing to learn from "old men". Thank you again.
i dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost my account password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Bruno Case I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process now. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I return to this wonderful homage to the pastime every year, immerse myself in the message and the moral code. I found this film first searching for a copy of the book , read it and followed a lifelong passion as a result, thank you!
I was brought up in Ireland and my many uncles took it in turns to take me fishing on lakes such as you show. I'm in my mid fifties now, and though none of us are big on emoting, I have found time to tell them how much it all meant to me. Your beautiful film brings it all back to me. One of the strongest senses I have of it is the democracy of fishing. In England trout lake fishing is something to aspire to: when I was a boy in Ireland it was what we all did when the time and water were right.
Killarney I have toured there the lakes the guide o the boat He had a fish finder I sat with him was great he knew a lot I asked of him the river that runs from these lakes have trout rising can I pay to fish them? He said O no,Sir you can fish them for free you can fish for salmon on these lakes for free for salmon you just pay for a boat and the gily
This is an inspiration film, I felt in touch with every clip. To me fly fishing is life, and I might have just found one of the best fly fishing films of all time. Thank you for producing this masterpiece.
A veritable gem of a film, captures the very essence of fishing. Well worth investing an hour of your life - it refreshes your soul. Study to be quiet......
I've little interest in the UK. But I am very glad I watched this. The history lesson is priceless and the scenes are remarkable. I have a deeper understanding of why my wife has an interest in this material. Thank you and all the people made this version, that has numerable life lessons to it as well as the story of Sir Izaak Walton.
I am an English angler that has never touched a fly, but only used bait and new forms of angling, but , I watched , and enjoyed your film. It will make me take up fly fishing in a small way ,as the trout taking the fly made me smile as much as wen I see my float sail under!
Did I just see a Yank do justice to English literature and to the noble art of fly fishing??!! Not only that but it was compelling from beginning to end. Top marks, Buddy!! 😉
Brilliant film, fantastic narration, beautiful music and a work of art. I now live in the glitz and glam of Monte-Carlo, Monaco but grew up fly fishing these rivers in Northern England. When I retire, this is what I want to be doing every day, fly fishing at home on the rivers' Ribble, Lune, Hodder, Wenning, Wharfe, Calder, Nidd etc, etc. How I miss those places.
Thank you! What an amazing story, I only wish that I could have experienced it myself! What a tribute to Walton and all those who fish. Truly magnificent!
Amazing film! I have only recently began fly fishing, and with this new discovery I've managed to spend much of my waking hours thinking of nothing but the great outdoors and the hidden fishing streams.
Thank you for such a heartwarming video. I too grew up fishing for wild trout in CT and have a special place in my heart for small brooks and browns. I was given a beautiful copy of The Complete Angler as a kid and I finally read it all the way through years later when I could enjoy it more. I am grateful to everyone i have met on the banks and waters of life and grateful we haven't changed that much as anglers over the years. Thanks again, Brandon
This video had brought me to the times when I was living and working in England and Scotland. I was only 20 years young at that time. I have very good memories from that time. I still have a book about fishing that I bought when I was in England. I wanted to see more of England and Scotland, not only a hard work. And to go fishing of course...I and my workmates visited some places during that time, but I didn't have time and opportunity to go fishing. However, England and Scotland left me only good memories; very glad for a chance to be there 🙂. Greetings from Lithuania 🌲🌳. (Forester Nerijus Pavalkius)
I loved the story and the passion. Thank you so very much for sharing this with everyone. And personally it helped me to reflect on some long ago memories that have been tucked away for far to long.
Wow. I recently realized that fishing helps me to reach my own "zen" state. I love that it is a universal feeling. Fishing seems to be all about living in the moment. Beautiful film.
Anglers who like this should watch A PASSION FOR ANGLING it's regarded as the best British fishing series ever made. Superbe camera work by Hugh Miles and the very best of the British countryside and coarse fishing.
That was fantastic. I talked to a grizzled old fisherman who owns a hatchery. He told me in the 80's the ponds would be shoulder to shoulder with families. Dads and moms out for a day of fishing with their kids. Sadly he has seen 5 kids this summer. They all play on their video games and electronic play stations. A loss of a society that will never feel the magic of fly fishing and the thrill of the outdoors. He was almost crying when he told this story. Some reflection on where we are going.
What a lovely film - perfect in many ways and with a lot of empathy and respect for the "good old days" without looking down to different kind/forms of fishery. Sometimes I had a little tear in my eyes during the film ... but all that in a good way. I will look into this film again. It maked me happy looking into my own background and what luck I have had during the live. Best wishes - tight loops and lines ..... :-)
every time i watch this the same feeling about feeling complete keeps getting me fired up to go out and search for the perfect cast!dear sir i thank you for this art you did with this video!mutch respect from Romania!
Respect from Romania!i watch this at least 2 times a month!it motivates me to search more and more for fly fishing material! This should be in schools to teach kids the real values of life! Nature and respect for it and alsow how to be real gentelman!
Makes me realize how much I love fly fishin, from small trout in streams to snook and reds on the flats it's all fun and always gives me the same completing feeling
Elegant and beautiful video indeed. As a fly fisherman, this depicts the side of fly fishing that people don't know about, that it is a form of art. One must study the creature, habitat and surroundings with an elevated concentration, being one with oneself and of course learning to be quiet. An enjoyable video.
Thanks for the effort that you put in to make this rather special film. it is great to hear someone express the other reasons that some of us fish, the connection with nature, the peace and the solitude that allows us to ponder on who and what we are. Staring into deep water from childhood - a pond, a river whirl-pool or a lake has a profound effect on one's adult life. You seem to have grown up very nicely, good luck with whatever you do.
A lovely film altogether, and reminds me of so much I enjoyed about fishing back when. Indulge my sensitivity: I don't think Sir John Swire was wearing a 3 piece suit in any of your film, unless he was hiding the waistcoat/vest (the 3rd piece) very well. It's tempting to assume a traditional suit has to be 3 piece, but nope. A lounge suit isn't and a tweed suit (more for outdoors) can be but rarely is. Ah, bring back the lounge suit - distinct from the business suit - for afternoon visits that no-one makes any more. Thanks for all the lyricism and gentleness in your film; it captures a time and a style so well.
I found your film very compelling, I'm so glad that I'm not alone in my fishing world. I didn't know until watching your film that Izaak Walton was buried at Winchester cathedral, I was taken there once when i was in the light infantry by my corporal. I felt a strange eeriness as I walked around in there and now you've made it all make sense.....thank you so much!! I often feel lost in this era, as if i should have been living years ago, it's so refreshing to find people making films like yours.
Peabody Award winner I believe. " won a Peabody Award in 2003 for his documentary about traveling through England in the footsteps of Izaak Walton, the seventeenth-century author of The Compleat Angler."
Such beautiful sights, words and music. Really enjoyed this film, James, and now looking forward to seeing your exhibit of 'ocean fishes' in the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia - round the corner from where Roan now lives! All the O'Sullivans send you our very best wishes, and with fond memories of Easton days.
Fantastic Video. Thank you so much for the upload. Truly a special way of showing and explaining the way in which we anglers view fishing. Greetings from Ireland and Tight Lines.

I've been following James Prosek from his earliest illustrations. Such an impressive young man - though he's put some years under his belt. This and much of his other work and attitude give me hope for the future.

Glad this came up on my feed; enjoyed it immensely from start to finish.

What a beautiful production.......very enchanting it left me feeling at peace with my own good fortune.
So many wonderful little quotes in this film. I've never fly fished but have angled all my life and this film really speaks to me, beautiful!
This is an inspiration film, I felt in touch with every clip. To me fly fishing is life, and I might have just found one of the best fly fishing films of all time. Thank you for producing this masterpiece.
Thank you, as a fly fisherman, actor and artist I thank you for helping the world to understand our passion as an art.
A veritable gem of a film, captures the very essence of fishing. Well worth investing an hour of your life - it refreshes your soul.

Wonderfully fine-tuned film about the soul and history of fly fishing. Many thanks from a fly fisherman in sweden 👌👏❤️
This was absolutely wonderful; a glimpse into heaven.
Thank you James Prosek for this wonderful film. The narrative, cinematography, and content is exceptional.
People like Izaak Walton, is no longer among us! That is a shame. Cause, it was men like him, who gave life a deeper meaning!
Greetings from Denmark !

I logged on to TH-cam 45 minutes ago to look up something else, but now I can't remember what that thing was. Nor do I care. This was amazing.
