  • A film bought to you from the Cairns Professional Game Fishing Association (CPGFA) to showcase our historical connection to the Great Barrier Reef together with those men and women who set out over 50years ago to fish these waters. Where we were and now where the CPGFA has evolved to. Conservation and Professionalism are forefront of the CPGFA and it’s code of conduct for all members which shows throughout the film.
Today, the CPGFA has over 40 member vessels representing the very best professional charter fishing operators in the world.
On The Edge gives you an insight to the day to day operation of the marlin charter fleet in Cairns and the majestic giant Black Marlin which draws anglers from all over the globe to Cairns, Australia each year.
Magnificent vessels, spectacular reef and great big fish. Please enjoy this production and support the CPGFA and it’s member operators.

Seeing the dance in person is a must for those trophy fishos and is a sight second to none, that even a person that isn't interested in the sport can be hooked them selves, lost alot of nice bill fish but was happy enough to see the majority of them walk the water, catch and release to preserve our oceans for our future generations, Cheers

Had “Goose-Pimples” watching these Superb Videos of the most beautiful of Marlin Species, making their fantastic Ballet-Jumps in their fight for survival. Fantastic Job for all the contributors in putting together “THE EDGE” production, and would like to give a Bear Hug to Capt.Laurie Wright, Capt. Ross Finlayson, Capt. Hayden Bell(my Hero in the Catch & Release of an Est. by Capt Haydon and Capt . Ross to have been 1,100+ lbs). May Hat OFF for all to contributors in putting this Video together in a very Professional manner🙏👌

Great video! During the 90s I caught 5 granders, 2 weighed the rest released, and I love fishing the barrier reef. I will always remember the marlin fishing, popper fishing, the swimming(snorkeling), the motherships, seaplane rides, and the odd party on the reef hosted on one of the motherships.

I have had dreams about being hooked up to a big black that stands up at the stern, and I'm looking up at it.
This was someday going to be my honeymoon. The closest I've come is hooking tarpon in my kayak. It's a thrill I can't describe.

post more and someone will, as some people are new and will need a crew. I'm personally looking to buy a boat in Vancouver Canada and organize fishing trips. For you? You need to realize that world is going to hell and inflation will eat up your boat payments. So your debt will disappear in couple years. You can also live on boat and rent it too, so it doesn't have to be a burden.

Just turned 37. Three years divorced. Let go from good job and can only find mediocre/shit jobs. Working two shit jobs to pay bills. $40k in worthless student loans I did not want. Financially ruined. Only thing holding me back from selling my house and all my shit is that I wouldn't be there for my daughter who is four and she wouldn't be there for me. Still thinking about moving to Cairns for a year and trying it... Dreamed about being a charter capt. in Cairns and fishing the Lizard Island black marlin fishery since I was a little shit catching perch and walleye on Lake Erie and snapper and grouper in Florida.
If any kid reads this... Don't take advice from people you respect or are in respectable positions if it doesn't align with that gut feeling that tells you that you would not be happy doing anything else but this. At least trying it. Going for it and failing is not failing. Never going for it and not failing is truly the failure. Whether it be a Dr., rock star, charter capt., entrepreneur, whatever.
Fuck backup plans, fuck normal, fuck safe, fuck easy, fuck everybody. Only you know. Take it from somebody old enough to know that nobody knows shit, including myself. Everyone is just guessing, going with what worked for them, what they think will work, or what they were told should work, etc... Everybody is just making it up as they go along. They may have your best interest at heart and may be the person you most respect. If they aren't telling you to go full go at whatever you want because they don't know what is best for you or what the future may hold, fuck 'em. They are dishonest, disingenuous, or disconnected. Either way. They don't know shit, nobody does.
We're all just winging it day to day and making it up as we go along as best we can. Anyone who tells you different is just a bigger fucking idiot than those who know that they don't even know what they don't know. The smartest people on Earth barely know a fraction of what they don't know. They make up, maybe, less than .02%. 99.98% of humanity are dumber than hammered shit. We all are riding the coattails of Jonas Salk, Copernicus, Einstein, etc. And, hell, even Einstein fucked his cousin. They just didn't not know a little more shit than most of us don't even know that we don't know...
      tl;dr
Nobody knows anything. Fuck everyone. Advice is all moonshine. Including that advice. Go after what you want to do, full go before it's too late and it becomes a no go, never go.

Excellent Video. I have always wanted to go there. I think I'll need to get my name on the list. Is there a website that has a waiting list and boat list? One other question, I noticed on several clips that you guys are cutting the leader on a lure caught fish, and letting the lure fly. I guess if you just got a grander to the leader and want to release it safely, the $100 lure is meaningless!!

Marlins are very delicious both raw or grilled. I think Marlins are easy to eat for American people who doesn’t eat much fish for the taste witch is not so fishy.
By the way I’m from Japan so we love seafood like crazy
