I just stumbled upon Nourishing Minimalism. I have had a very tough time since becoming a single empty nester who moved from a 2300 square foot home to a studio apartment. It is hard to let go of a lifetime of objects and memories that mark times in our lives. My entire lifestyle has changed and these videos make me realize I need to adjust to the life I have now. Instead of looking at letting go as a loss, I need to look at it as a renewal. New beginnings can be tough but the clutter is making me crazy. I no longer cook for six or throw dinner parties so out goes the dishes for twelve and the oodles of fancy serving trays and champagne flutes. Goodwill here I come.
TA, I’m clearing out my small home with a similar goal. Have just retired and know I’ll downsize, but when? I too am trying to look at it as a new adventure.
This may be new and challenging right now, but the amount of " brain space" you declutter in this process will amaze you! You will gain the ability to plan, to dream, to do. How long that takes is uo to you...theres no timeline. Best wishes to you!
I did that too. Children all married n left. We are in our sixties and dnt throw parties anymore. I had to declutter and gave away my dinner sets n serving plates away. Felt sad but being practical was better than being emotional. Cabinets look cleaner and best of all have less to tidy up inside
I have a tip for families like mine, where we sleep on shifts. I go to bed early because I am a morning person. My husband worked 3rd shift most of our marriage. Now retired, we found that we still like our personal private time. So there was no reason to change. So since the kitchen is clean before I go to bed, he uses paper plates overnight so there's no snack dishes, cuts etc in the morning. He has limited mobility, so he is not able to stand to wash up after himself but does not want to give me extra work so its a compromise. Regular meals are taken care of when im awake, and we use our regular dishes during those times. Just works for us.
I agree with you ...in my case i would often want something expensive but due to the price i buy more cheaper things that dont really satisfy and regret. Rather buy the item you really love and would make you happy for years to come than clutter. Into jewelary instead of costume jewelary. A big statement piece vase instead of having 6. A nice piece off wall decor etc.
Routines are so important. After breakfast I clean up the kitchen. Spotless. And it is satisfying and give me the push to move forward to do other things like laundry. When I cook lunch (I'm from Germany, we eat the warm meal in the noon not in the evening) I clean up after it, spotless. And what helps me, I have just the mandatory items in my kitchen. It makes me so happy. Cleaning up the kitchen is so easy. And because of this routines in the kitchen I'm in peace to not have the kitchen spotless in the evening, when I'm very tired. Also the bathroom is just mandatory items. My husband has a lot more stuff, but it is okay, he has a cabinet and I can close the door. But not everybody (me included) put everything immediately away. So I created the habit to organize things and put them away, every time I'm in the bathroom. It takes a few seconds and it is always organized. That is cool and hive me a lot of peace. I hope to create a habit for my paper clutter... I still procrastinate every single paper in my house. Urghh.... Before Christmas (and also the children's birthday) I declutter toys with my children. They have fun to sell them and earn money or give it to poor chikdren and they are looking forward to receiving new things.
Hi, I started a couple of years ago and followed Marie Kondo method. I was pleased with the results but after a while I found that there was still too much stuff to deal with. I then discovered the minimal mom and, more recently, you. I'm so glad I did! I have felt very motivated and have become a regular face at the donation center! I have started cleaning up, or resetting as you say, after breakfast and after dinner, it's so much better! I used to come downstairs in the morning to the dishes and pans from the night before and found it so depressing! I love all your ideas and tips, thank you! ❤
That's so wonderful Kirsty! Thank you! I enjoyed Marie Kondo's method, and found it helpful, but yes, I want to go deeper into simplicity to make life easier. ❤️
Setting myself limits was hugely helpful to me. I can keep as much fabric as I like….as long as it fits in this drawer. I can keep aaaallllll the yarn I want…..that will fit in this basket. It’s SO simple and SO obvious yet it wasn’t until a few years ago that I realised it was the case. Previously I’d have gone and bought another basket because “my yarn doesn’t fit in the one I have”. Now I know that 1 basket is a reasonable amount and I have to either use some up, or operate a 1 in 1 out policy.
Limiting your dishes really works! I deliberately have less dishes in our RV, which forces me to do the dishes throughout the day. At home, we have a dishwasher and we are "empty nesters" now, so it isn't as much of a daily thing anymore. I also wanted to say that as of June 17, 2021, I have crossed off 1548 boxes on my "2021 Items in 2021 Challenge" sheet! I did count individual pieces of paper most of the time though (because I had kept every single receipt for the past 12 years and I had an entire desk to go through. End result? I now have a clean, organized, functional desk!). I recommend the Challenge sheet. It's so much fun!
@@thieu-tietparsons9369 Just take it a bit at a time and you'll make progress in no time. One summer I cleared out 2 bedrooms FULL of stuff I wasn't using in about 3 weeks. You couldn't even open the door to one room! It's kind of embarrassing to admit but I did it by watching a movie on TV every afternoon and seeing how much I could get done during the commercials. It became a game! Devoting small blocks of time consistently really do work! Good luck!
I just started last night on the office supplies - I love office supplies! Now I have a big pile of dried up pens and markers I can get out of my house. This is a hard category for me but I must face that things have changed with the computers and we don´t use this stuff like before. Thank you for your great videos, I just subscribed.
Yah, what is it about office supplies that is so alluring so desirous. I LOVE to get new pens, new markers, new notebooks of various sizes. My grownup daughter once decluttered for me told me, “you may not get any more notebooks. You have these many unused ones.” If these notebooks were like women and I were a married man, I would be commenting adultery right and left. I have roaming eyes for notebooks. All right, getting off to go back to decluttering now :)
I'm so happy to come across your videos. I'm a solo 54 year old mum of a beautiful daughter. We moved about 6 mths ago and I'm really struggling. I'm so very overwhelmed with the amount of clutter that's in our home. I so badly want to be more minimalist with what we own but where do I start ,I'm so very confused.
I heard about the 2021 items in 2021 challenge in April. I knew I had done more than that in January alone, so I challenged myself to declutter at least 2021 items each quarter. Since I'm still on my first round of decluttering, this has not been difficult. I decluttered more than 2021 items in April. I don't even bother counting items now. As long as I keep at it, I have no doubt I will reach the quarterly goal. I would make it a monthly goal, but that adds pressure, so I'm happy with quarterly.
I love the set a goal tip! I have been doing it on a room by room basis but with no timeline. I have a HUGE problem with paper. It overwhelms me. The points idea is super motivating. Will check out the challenge!! Thanks so much1!
When I still lived in a home with a dishwasher, I would run 2 loads a day, even though I felt guilty wasting power, water and detergent doing partial loads. But if I waited until I had a full load to do, I wouldn't have enough space in the dishwasher! Sometimes you just have to pick your battles.
Daniel, Yesterday mine ran 3 times and I was home alone at the weekend, - regular load, glass quick gentle load, then last thing cooker top/ oven shelves etc heavy load, a real miracle to open in the morning, have everything sparkling clean, don’t be feeling guilty, if like us you have a boiler which takes ages to heat water, revel in efficiency, hygiene, time saved.
We have 5 dinner plates so when my mum comes for lunch she’s now used to following me into the kitchen and we chat while I wash up after lunch, she lives alone and prefers to watch up every few days because she hardly uses much in that time. 20 personal items is something I’m going to aim for next.
Love your Westie! We had one. Her name was Holly. We now have 2 Cairn Terriers, Winston and his mom, Dixie! I enjoy your channel very much. Dawn from minimal mom recommended your channel.
That's great idea of tracking how many I get rid off. I have finally finished kitchen and now is time to sort out the cooking books. I have to listen once more you video where you have mentioned how to get rid of them
I am crying my eyes out as I am so overwhelmed and embarrassed by the way I have given up. I want so much to declutter but just struggle with starting. Can you advise me on how to take that first step and feel good about my efforts?
PTL Cindy…it’s going to be okay; cry it out, just refuse to quit. Watch how you talk to yourself, stop saying things to yourself you would not say to a friend.
do the easiest space, a shelf, drawer, cupboard, room. Whatever is easy and not emotionally charged for you. Then you will have some success to build upon. edit= and I will add, you can look at that space, & think I did that, how lovely.
@@lilithstuff8355 thank you for your reply. I like the term constipated to describe my home. I always say I am lazy but not a hoarder and not dirty, just cluttered. 🤣 I luv home department stores....I look at pretty sheet sets & cozy blankets, I ask myself do I really want to have more laundry?...😒Nooooooooooooooooo, the same for bath towels, nooooooooooo.
Just called my daughter to see if she wants my instant pot. I had to have it. I don't use it and she loves the one she's got so it will be a blessing to her. The one I have is larger. I find it too big to store easily and I can make anything I want with the other things I already have.
I did put away my expensive crockery etc many yrs. ago when children were small , did use some on weekends when we felt like special dinners were needed. But the showpieces remained in storage. At present my problem is to get them dusted .I am overwhelmed. I asked my daughter to help but somehow other matters demand her attention.
Love your Ideas.....I'm working on Embracing them for myself! Do you believe a person can achieve minimalism in most areas and have a single vice area of excess....such as artwork & art pieces on a rotating display?
Off topic...but in your boys bedroom, wouldn't it make more sense to put the beds on the other wall so as not to block what looks like a bathroom /closet? Also, could the bed rails be bleached? Minimalism means something different to different people. Marie Condo didn't have children yet when she became famous. After having children, she admits its a whole different thing when it comes to minimalism. I have a beautiful new dishwasher, but tend to hand wash thru the day. It's so easy. Letting it pile up is not only disgusting, and messy, but it makes for harder work if left until the end of the day or (Ewwww) the next morning :P I choose to (and have to) keep my kitchen in order at all times, because when you walk into our home, you walk right into the great room consisting of the large kitchen, dining area and living space. But its not hard for me because I enjoy keeping up my home. And yes, you are right about how we tend to make a job bigger in our minds than it really is. tfs 🥰💐🌱🌿🌷🌼🌻🌞🌵🏜️💞💗 from Arizona
I wish investing in a course would help. I paid a lot of $ to tidy tudor for a course, but did only 1 day of 3 hours or so, and never was able to do the weekly zoom meeting, as I had a different one on my schedule at the exact same day and time EVERY week. This is all my fault, I know, not hers. I just can't motivate myself. All my friends are working, or too far away to help. I could hire someone to help, but once when I hired an organizer for 2 hours to get me on track for paper , it turned out to be a waste of money, as I didn't like her personality I guess, and she was into micro-organizing, which I can't do. I'm trying to donate a lot of my crafting items to "disabledArtists", and that helps motivate me to clear some of it out. However I only do it once a wk or so, a bit at a time, it's too overwhelming. Washing my dishes and making my bed every day is no problem. I need to DECLUTTER! Love your videos, thanks.
I’m hearing a lot of “ I can’ts “. Try some “ I wills “! If you won’t sacrifice for what you want…what you want IS the sacrifice. Get up right now and clear off a surface or a section of a surface. Put everything where it goes…and some of it may go in the trash or a donation bag….and keep moving. Momentum is a real thing. Soon you’ll start looking forward to the next time you have a snippet of time and energy to clear off another space. Start with the visible clutter first so you can get a sense of accomplishment. You can and you will do this.
But we must not be too hard on ourselves because we don't realise how many interruptions there are in actual life when you are doing something. it could be a courier at the door asking for a signature, Security cone to inform about something without bothering to use the intercom. Children asking for things while you are focused on a specific chore on hand, and similar interruptions.🙏
"This is not the hill I've chosen to die on". I need this on a t-shirt! Thank you for your ideas x
I wrote that one down. I just love that. I have a new mantra. lol. Actually, it will be my first one.
Just printed out the 2023 declutter challenge sheet. Thanks! Excited to get started!😊

I wash our dishes after every meal .I keep a tub with soapy water in it that they go in.
Intakes 4 minutes.
