- NEW KOI POND SYNDROME has been part of my pond for 11 months now and I'm just about completing it.
This video will take you through the stages of the Nitrification cycle I have experienced since building my Koi Pond and how I got through it using a number of ideas like POND TEST KITS, ADDING BENIFICIAL BACTERIA, POND WATER CHANGES etc...

Been ongoing the design etc! Rescued koi happy! But treatments and bacteria been quite a challenge! Algae on liner been ongoing ! Filtration for both ponds more than afaquate!

Great video, I’m going through new pond syndrome at the moment, ammonia dropped off but nitrite high. I’ve done 20% water change and added a pond Bomb. Hope this helps bring the nitrite levels down. You explained this cycle very well. Thank you

Must thank you Andy for showing me Fok pond clay. After running my 2,000 gallon pond for 25 years I recently watched one of James the koi whisperer's video's where he showed adding Mediclay & explained what it added to the water & how the koi benefit. Been adding 50 gms / week since watching & buying some & all seems good with gin clear water & happy fish. Just as the mediclay was running out I watched you compare the value of the two brands of clay, I replaced with Fok for the first time this week, as I add clay every Thursday , 24 hours later the koi seem very happy & content., the 20 x 5 cm baby koi added in July this year are dashing around the koi I how spent 25 years growing on from a baby & the others. Thanks mate !

OMG!!!!!! WISH I HAD FOUND Your video FIRST!!!! Had a Koi/Wade Pond with a waterfall installed and added $1000 (5 big koi and a couple of bits) only to all end up dead a month later .... cause I thought all I had to do was change the self dosing bag once a mth and add beneficial bacteria once a week and keep the water at a certain level. THIS IS REALLY A FULL TIME JOB: which I was not looking for....

Hi, that’s an interesting watch, I’m currently peaking in nitrite and nitrate , who would of thought it was so involved, I’ve just lost my biggest to what I believed was swim bladder disease she was at least 20 years old so quite sad, now I’m seeing some flashing and couple of fish with cotton like fungus so treating whole pond for 5 days, seems like one drama after another 😩 hopefully not to much longer till it levels out, nice to know I’m not alone, 👍

I lost 2 this year and all the time and effort spent with the fish, they become part of the family pets. I have gone through all you mention f! Salt being key! Kockney koi four bay, 2 ponds ! Both independently or joined with cascades Summer! Planning for winter poly carboanqye and reduce oxygen etc. Added water filter chlorine,

Hi, Glad you enjoyed the video. From my experience I would suggest you consider putting just a hand full of fish in a new pond to allow your filter system to 'get up to speed' with the nitrification cycle before adding your planned amount of fish. Too many fish and too much feeding hungry Koi could over whelm your filters and you will spend too long trying to reduce the Ammonia and Nitrites, while putting your fish at risk? 😉👍
I plan on just starting with 3 or 4.

Hi Andy. Been following you for a bit and just came across this video. It's been a great help. I have a 20000lph various, a 30000lph pressure filter into a 3 tier bakki shower feeding a 5000 ltr koi pond. It's only been running a week but I am starting to see an increase in no2. I did add some liquid bacteria would dropping myto the shower to begin with. I have done a 15% water change. I have 0 ammonia. Would dropping my pump down to give the waste more time to raise the NHS levels to help the cycle. Trev
Hiya, glad your enjoying the videos and you finding them helpful.. Slowing the pump down could help so wouldn't knock it till you've tried it. Also the water changes and reduction in feeding to reduce the waste will also help while the filter matures. You can't remove the feeding completely as this would remove the waste and stop the cycle.. The key is balancing feeding against the water tests 🤔😉👍... Water Tests good more feed, test bad reduce feed and so on.. Good luck.😉👍

Hi mate great video, loved it u remembered the name for K1 but forgot the flow cor name lol, I’m the same as u mate and don’t like the idea of the bacteria balls getting into my pond, u can put them anywhere in your filter, even in side a netted bag of some sort is fine, they only need your water passing by them, keep up the good work all is looking well 👌🏻

I just found your channel. This late bit of advice is to add Folic Acid supplement tablets into the pond water as it goes into the filter. I had a 10000 gallon/40000L pond that I would put a dozen or so tablets every day for about ten days. Folic acid is very cheap and works wonders. Add every time that you work on filters, clean ponds, etc. The good bacteria eat the folic acid and makes them stronger, reproduce faster, and they will continue to function much later into the cold months. Plus the filter will recover faster in the Spring when your season begins again.

I’m having an issue with nitrites in my pond and can’t seem to get rid of them would these tablets help with that?
Your better reducing the feed right down and 10-20% water change. Then re test.. you have to reduce the food to reduce the waste that creates the Nitrite. But don't stop completely as the beneficial bacteria needs the ammonia to feed off..👍😉
@@skylarkowalski5086 The folic acid tablets are relatively slow in action. Water changes and food reduction along with the tabs can help. Add tabs after water changes.
@@skylarkowalski5086 The bacteria that convert nitrites to nitrates are the most slow growing and sensitive. Along with other suggestions, go to pond or pet store and get live bacteria to add to pond after water changes. Check expiration dates!! Also add a few more tablets of folic acid than previously recommended.

Slowly catching up Andy 😁 one thing about nitrate. Have you tested your tap water? Im in Rural Lancs and our tap water has high nitrate levels naturally. So no amount of water changes helps. I had to add iris, hosta and a water lilly to lower it otherwise i was plagued with string algea.
Yes i test my tap water as it can change. Things like the PH in tap water is also good to know as well. With having no veg in my pond I sometimes put a plant in my filter system to water it so it will take nitrate out. The thing you've got to watch with that is what it's potted in as potting soil is very high in Nitrate so if you stick that in your pond your just increasing it. 😉👍👍😮
Ho congrats on the 1K sub's only just spotted it that new pond can bite and go on for 12 months or more bouncing around most people start with to many fish and keep putting in more in filters take time a year to run in K1 is a hard one that takes two years to get to a good state

Always understood Nitrate would not go down unless you have a Bog filter with plants unless you do large water changes. (Final part of the cycle)

Hiya, reduce feeding and water change around 10-20%. See if you can balance your feeding to your water test results. If your not heated stop feeding at 10degrees. If your heated then continue to feed but monitor amount vs water test results. Good luck..😉👍

Thanks for watching. That's my Orange Doitsu that always like to be near you especially when you have food in your hand. Doitsu. Refers to koi that have no scales, except for enlarged scales on the lateral line and two lines running alongside the dorsal fin. Glad you enjoyed the video...

No problem! The thing with his pond is there's no real filtration or changing of water so the fish are basically sitting in their own waste for to long? I will have a look through if he wants me to. I haven't been up there for ages...😉😉

keeping in mind that this is something many new fish/koi keepers are seeing, you have done a fantastic job explaining the nitrogen cycle in an approachable way. ive been keeping fresh and saltwater for around 12 years now and want to try my hand at koi.

Hi, thanks for your comments. I built the pond with one of the builders from work laying the blocks with me as his labourer. The rest done by myself. I made a video on how I made it and a time lapse so you see see how it was done. Enjoy....😉😉👍
It's very important for new koi pond owners to not assume that the cycle will complete between 4-6 weeks like what you've read online. Let me tell you, it is way longer than that. 4-6 weeks may apply for an aquarium but not in a koi pond.
Here's my timeline so far.
2/18/2022 - Water started flowing through my filter, and I put in a bag of shrimp/squid to start ammonia cycle
3/06/2022 - I added my first batch of Koi
4/04/2022 - Is when I noticed my ammonia is reaching 0 based on the API tests
5/5/2022 - Nitrite still high, but I can see that it is slowly showing signs of going down base on the test results. Nitrate is showing around 20 ppm.
I expect another month before it reaches 0.
An experienced Koi keeper told me it takes between 6 months to 2 years for a pond to establish. I should not have added fish in so soon.

The video was intended to give others my experience In the first year of a new pond and how to get over the first frustrating months as new pond keepers may not be aware of the natural time scale it can take and how to deal with it and make adjustments to what you do to keep the nasty ammonia and Nitrites at bay while mother nature does her thing? @@KoiPondLifestyle Well I put a bag of shrimp because I was essentially on vacation those weeks. But the shrimp is good because you can have ammonia and since there are no fish, it wouldn't hurt anyone. Next time on my new pond, I'm going to flow water for salt 3 months before adding fish. And I'll do it with pure ammonia from a bag of shrimp.

Water changes will dialute the ammonia and Nitrite. I always test any water I use to see what it contains before going into the pond..I recently did a video on testing Water if you want to check that one out. 😉😉👍👍
Could you add some used filter pads/sponge from an aquarium or seeded media from the local fish shop to get the cycle going?
Whenever I'm settling up a new tank, I just move some of the media across. Instant cycle pretty much.

Two question I have are how many fish shall i start with and should I slowly increase the numbers I was thinking start with 2 give it a month then add another 2 so on or should I just get 20 fish and put them in all at once and do you think the time of year is going to make a difference? My thoughts are summer the bacteria will grow faster but winter the fish are less active and eating less not that I’ve ever heard people starting of a new koi pond in the middle of winter

The amount of fish would depend on the size of your pond? Too many large fish in a small pond will produce too much waste for your filters to cope with and the nitrite levels would overwhelm the fish and kill them. Not enough in a big pond and the cycle could take ages to get started? From my experience I would place no more than 5-6 small to medium size fish and see how the nitrification levels go? Test water every day so you can react as described in the video. Plenty of air pumped into the pond to help as well. With regards to timing, and I was building a pond I would try to get it ready for water and fish in really early spring. That would give the pond the whole summer to start up and give the fish a chance to settle in. I made a mistake of adding fish too late in the year and they didn't make it through the winter. I'm just editing a video of my ponds first 12 months with this info in that could help your questions? Cheers....

Hiya, OJ is approx 10years old now. One of the tamest Koi I have. Hand feeds and will rest on your hand..😉👍
another bacterium set converts nitrate into nitrogen gas, which is then released at the water's surface and absorbed into the air. This natural process of nitrate removal from your pond is known as complete nitrification or de-nitrification.
The conundrum of complete nitrification, however, is that the process relies on special bacteria to convert nitrate into free nitrogen. These bacteria require low-oxygenated, stagnant water to survive. In fact, the oxygen-rich water of most ponds and filtration systems creates a deadly environment for these essential denitrifying bacteria. In other words you wont get these bacteria and you need to get them out with water changes.
Im busy with a PP dip on my pond now this is the last treatment then i hope that my pond is going to go on strong again

hi , just built my new pond , had to build a bigger one as I was given a lot of fish to rehome in the summer. do you stop feeding your fish , and if so what time of year. just I was wanting to feed them a little bit to raise the good bacteria in the new pond.
Hiya, In the UK we are coming close to non heated pond dropping to below 10 degrees, at that point I stop feeding. Heated ponds can continue if thay can hold the temp above 10 degrees. If you have a new pond I would feed to meet the after tests. If its a new pond replacing a matured pond, I would but some of the matured media in the new filters to help them out...cheers 😉👍

Hi andy ive been having issues withmy nitrate levels ive done a 50 percent water change and put additives in my new filter but still getting high levels its a pink colour on the nitrates ive heard about clay do you put it straight in the pond or filter and how long after a water change do you think you should get lower nitrate readings cheers
Hiya. Now if your talking about Nitrate, I wouldn't worry to much as its the Nitrite you have to worry about. If you mean Nitrites, then 10-20% water changes to dilute it and reduce the fish feeding right down so they just have enough food to create waste. If your in the UK In these temps your fish will be very hungry but you'll need to be feeding alot less for the time being and watch the Nitrite levels. When they start to go down you can start to increase feeding again. If they start to go up again reduce the feed. It's getting that balance.. Most of all you have to be patient as this is mother matures pond cycling... With regards to clay, some Clay's assist with promotion of beneficial bacteria. FOK is one that I use and helps to increase the good bacteria. Good luck Hope this has helped.. 😉👍
Andy why haven't u made a fabric filter instead of using filter floss ? I made mine out of grid and covered in fine micro fabric

Hi I'm completely new to this. I dug a pond and got some small koi in there at the moment, what would u say to buy for safe water on a budget 🤔
Filter system is a must. You've got to be able to circulate the water every day and filter out the waste. Then clean the filter system each week but be careful with the cleaning of the plastic media as that will hold the beneficial bacteria. Speak to your local fish shop or where you got your Koi from to see what they have on a budget.. 😉👍

There are a number of methods 1. Add food to an empty pond to start the cycle 2. Add amonia to an empty pond to start the cycle 3. Add a few fish to start the cycle . You can also buy and add bacteria to the filter to increase their levels quicker. The thing to remember is the bacteria and the amount of waste must match otherwise you are just wasting money
Number 3 for me every time mate. You might as well start as you mean to go on with the fish creating the waste rather than trying to do it artificially. As I said in the video Patients will get you through it with just enough fish to start the cycle then add more once your through it....
Would I need a trickle in trickle out system in a large (10,000 litre) ecological pond
If you believe there is a risk of flooding then an overflow drain built into your filter system would be required. If you mean a triple in system for your pond, why not. It would help with water changes buy you would again need an over flow to allow the water swapping and the trickle in fills the pond..😉👍

Hi, thanks for watching. I am currently working on some changes to my filter bays over winter. I don't want to change anything now due to messing up my beneficial bacteria that's taken so long to get into the filters. If you have a look at my intro to my filter system video I explain more about my system there. With regards to the best media to use?? That is a great question that you will hear alot of different answer from different people. I will be making a video on what I change my system to. My advice would be same, don't change anything until after winter. Hope this helps.

If you only have 3 bays then I would suggest bay 1 is brushes, bay 2 is media (Jap matting, K1 media etc) then some sort of sponge filter to remove the fine stuff before the water heads back to your pond. Its going to take some time for the beneficial to take charge in your filters. Good luck with your pond...
What the basic things anyone should have at home if you have baby koi.
Hiya, I would keep fry away from the coming frosts if your in England as the fry would struggle with the changes in weather. There is another Channel (Derby Koi) that's currently looking after Baby Koi that might have more info on the subject. 😉😉👍👍
My pond is 6 wks old when should I clean my filter out?
I clean my filters out every week in summer when feeding is at its highest. The more you feed the more waste is produced to the filter, and the more they need cleaning. Less feed less waste and so on.
Always clean your media filters with pond water. Brushes can be rinced with the hose pipe. How is your ammonia levels going. Are you starting to see any Nitrite yet? Thing is you're adding fish to a pond that's not cycled. You wouldn't dream of doing that in a tropical aquarium, and its frowned upon to to do a fish-in cycle. So you add a source of ammonia , and cycle gradually.
Hiya, I completely agree. My fish had to go from the original pond to the new pond so alot of fish in a new pond with new filters. If I'd had the choice I would have placed just a few fish in to get through the cycle, then increased the fish from there.. cheers 😉 👍
Hi, after 25 years, I have had to have my pond re fiberglass, and the fish have been in the pond for 2 weeks. amonia is about 0.7, but my koi are flicking and jumping. I treated them with formalin and malachite 8 days ago but still flicking and jumping some what, so I am thinking of putting in Clorimine T. What would you do?

@@kenn3875 ahh right, I'm just treating for that myself. I've used separate Formalin and malachite green as found It works better for my pond instead of the already mixed stuff as I can control the separate doses. I will dose 3 times after 5-7 days with UV off and predose cleaned filters..

Hiya. If you have fish in the pond, and feeding them, they will be creating the ammonia to start the cycle. The beneficial bactieria you can add will help speed things up and the warm weather at the moment will also help. Giving the media beds plenty of oxygen is also key as the beneficial bactieria grow best in warm, dark places where they can intake oxygen. It nature's cycle that's going on in your pond at the moment that we can speed up a little but apart from being patient while it happens...🤔😉👍

Thought about adding some goldfish but first, that's kinda mean to make them suffer with ammonia and nitrite.. and secondly i dont know if they would be 100% healthy. Dont wanna introduce any parasites to it. My baby koi that ive had since last fall (knocks on wood) are doing great in their container pond, so i dont want to worry about strange fish in their new water.. what i did the other night was siphon the fish poo from the bottom of the container pond and added it to the big pond. Should I just keep doing that?
@@high_fructose_corn_syrup hiya, you really need to add fish for them to create the ammonia needed to start the filters maturing. The gold fish idea is a good one to start your pond as goldfish are quite hardy and as long as you monitor the ammonia levels and act with water changes and reduce the feed if needed they will help kick start everything. Just don't add too many fish to begin with so your filters can cope with the waste..😉👍
I noticed aeration in your filter. Where in the filter do you recommend I place mine?
My air was placed in bays where beneficial bacteria was growing like moving beds and joa matting. Here's how I placed the air with DIY air blowers..

Alot of Koi carry them around with them or they can come from slugs getting into the filters or pond. Bird pooh can carry Parasites. The most common one is adding new fish that your not aware of their history.. Many a pond has been desimated by an out break from intro of new fish..
I've always used suppliers I know or people that I know where their Koi have come from. Always be carefully to accept a cheap or free Koi without plenty of research..😉👍

What are you doing that will reduce your nitrate? Can't see any plants in your video so curious as to what you are doing.
Hiya, I've never found my Nitrates to be high enough to worry about. I mainly monitor Ammonia, Nitrite and the KH levels to ensure they are where they should be and my pond water is at the right levels for the fish. 😉👍
@@KoiPondLifestyleThanks for the reply, you said in your video the nitrate level will peak and then drop down, I wondered why you are expecting it to drop? I would expect it to plateau as it will be bled off by your water changes unless you have something else going on?
The water changes do see the levels managed but I don't really worry too much about Nitrate as much as the Ammonia and Nitrite.

Hiya, how often would depend what your filters can cope with as your fish create waste. . Heavy feeding creates alot of ammonia from the fish that turns to Nitrite, both as you saw in the video are harmful. As I said in the video if your water tests are good then increase the feeding but if the harmful results are seen reduce the feeding. You can feed as many times as your fish like if the filters can handle the waste..

@@kenr4676 Hi, first you need to check if the white spots are waxy or are they small white hard spots? If they look waxy they might be Carp Pox that should go when the water warms up. The beneficial bacteria needed for cycling cannot be bought in a power or dry form. As they would be dead. They constantly need a food source. There is only one or two products on the market that send you the bacteria needed and it is shipped cool packed and mailed immediately so the bacteria well survive. I have read this on several sights about the packaged bacteria and its just a scam?

Koi are too expensive.
Pee in the pond for a few weeks to get the ammonia cycle going.
The bio filters will get populated and things will cycle for a time.
Then put the fish in.
Absolutely no reason to risk the fish. And it's too much time and energy monitoring things with the fish in.
Just let the sucker go swamp and relax. The swampier the better because the bacteria population will ramp up then.. Then it will magically clear up in time.
Then fish.
