Awkwardly talking to actors and other folks that worked on the musical just to ask questions about the show itself since information was still so scarce. Buying a copy of the script with a friend and us losing our damn minds because we HAD the SCRIPT. oh my god!! i remember pouring over everything i could dig up from this back in 2016/17--the demos, a pdf of the playbill, every scan of a newspaper review i could find--and feeling so bummed that i'd never get to see it. thank you so much to everyone who worked hard finding this, it is more even insane than i ever could have hoped for. i love it.
I’m not part of R.A.R.E., but I’ve been a fan of Rag Dolly since I discovered it. I’m so glad you were able to find it, and I want to thank everyone who made the release of this video possible!
I found out about the musical after watching the review by Colin LooksBack. I love the music, including some songs added to the stage version like Diagnosis. I thought the plot of the film was unfocused (even by the standards of a kids film). After learning that the stage version's plot was significantly different (and darker?) I was really curious to see what that would be like. I never expected to see it, and I didn't know a script existed either. Watching it now, I've got a few things to say: Dark Themes -- I'm totally fine with it being centred around a "dying" child. I was very ill when I was little and I think the play really captures how anxious a serious childhood illness can make parents. Plus how they try to hold things together (or fail to, with alcoholism etc). Also how the doctors are so detached that they don't seem to take any of it seriously. There was a lot of relatable stuff in there that I think was handled really well. Panda -- Honestly, Panda is very easy to "fix". I'd say either (1) get rid of the "Chinese" robe / clothing and change all the lines to standard English, i.e. get rid of any accents or broken English. Just have them be a wise bear like Winnie the Pooh etc. Or (2) literally just remove them from the show. I don't think they ever even do anything significant to the plot? Even Baby has a more significant interaction (with the Mother in the forest). The Plot -- Oof. Where do I start? This is the biggest issue to me. I love what the story is trying to do, but it comes across as very confusing. If the show was put on again I think the script would need to be partially rewritten. It's unclear what the characters want. Marcella wants to get better (of course). Apart from that she wants to find her mother and father. And she's following them across the country (?) Maybe it's just me but I had a REALLY hard time making out what was going on in the video. I assumed General D was a metaphor for Death? Something that's been following her for a while since she's been told she's critically ill. That's great, but it seemed to drift away from that focus? With magic rings, and her old bird and dog reincarnated and... Omg, whoever wrote this, please pick something and stick to it. Sexual Themes -- I didn't mind the dark themes. But the sexual themes... Yeah, that was weird. Just every now and then something would come up. General D wanting to take Marcella as his bride and some of the lines around that made me feel very uncomfortable. And then there was the extended pole dancing scene -- I honestly can't believe that's in a Raggedy Ann Musical. Well... This turned into an essay. Anyway, if you're reading this, thanks for hearing me out :) and maybe chuck the video a like, too
The revival effort has finished the first draft of the rewritten script. I think you'll be pleased to know that all of these concerns have been thoroughly thought through and addressed within the reworked script!
Finally! It is thanks to your work that Frankie and the RARE community have been able to recover the recording and many more It is your joint work for the fact that in 2021 rag Dolly musical came out on the light of day! Many thanks to Kiwi M! Many thanks to Ronnie Ladder! Many thanks to Ivy Austin! Many thanks to everyone who helped to join the brick for the return of the musical! Just the biggest thanks to you! Ogromne podziękowania dla Was!
i first heard about this musical right before the pandemic started. if there was any piece of lost media i wanted to see found the most, it was this one. thank you edit: if this ended up with a revival, i could see it being meant for older audiences rather than children. like of course the racism and pedophilia needs to be cut completely. but with musicals like dear evan hansen having shown that modern audiences can handle darker themes, this show could be a hit with the people who grew up with raggedy ann dolls. it just needs a bit of tweaking done to the script and advertising that clearly shows who the audience for this show is.
I've had a copy of this for nearly 20 years, and dearly love it. This is one of those rare musicals that was considered an off Broadway flop, only to gain a huge fanbase years after it was thought lost & long forgotten. "Rag Doll With A Candy Heart" was actually the original name when the idea of transferring the 1977 "Raggedy Ann And Andy's Musical Adventure" movie to a stage production. It went through dozens of rewrites of both script & score to get to what we have here. The story is every emotion rolled into one, and is almost magical. As for the score, except for needing a much better overture and maybe a full cast post bows reprise of "I'm (She's) A Rag Doll", the rest of the score should be left alone. Because, it's nearly perfect. Enjoy this wonderful underrated and underappreciated beautiful production. You'll laugh, cry, and scream.
Im currently watching the footage now and I just wanna say this. Thank you so so SO much for doing this for us. I don’t think anybody who likes this show would have been able to see it if it wasn’t for you guys. I’ve liked this musical probably for around 4 years now and I just remember thinking when we were gonna get footage and just hoping that it would come soon. Just seeing it now is everything I need. Hopefully we can try to revive the show and make it popular but for now, Thank you.

Seriously, keep up the good work, and I look forward to what the future holds for this little gem. Hell, as a working actor myself, I'm more than ready to slip my headshot under the door for General D (or at the very least Wolf, I ain't picky)
thank you so much! if youre really interested in the work we're doing on the revival in addition to the lost media search, consider joining our discord server! we'd love to have you :)
OMG! Thank you so much! I remember watching videos about this musical months ago and being obsessed with the songs! I can't believe we can all finally watch the footage and see how the show went! I really appreciate all the effort and hard work that this group has done to find this!
i thank you to whoever uploaded this cause my daughter loves this movie. its been her favorite for years and she was excited to find out this came out on youtube.
YASS!!! Im so happy u were able to get the footage & show it to the world. ur amazing gwyn, n so is everyone else involved with this project. keep up the good work everyone!
Don't get me wrong, the actors are putting their all into this performance, but my goodness the script is weird. The plot was disjointed, and the dialogue at times bordered on being complete gibberish. I'm not sure how this got on stage without anybody coming out and asking what the heck it all meant.
agree. they only had FOUR MONTHS to write, stage, learn, and build everything for the show!! they did wind up making a much cleaner, more concise version down the road, but once it got to Broadway it had a whole bunch of NEW problems. Hopefully with the planned revival we can have the best of both worlds.
Woah - as someone who remembers the movie very fondly (and loves Joe Raposo) I heard about this show back when there was nothing, then there was one very low quality recording - it's amazing it's gotten this far. Congratulations!
I think that something like Raggedy Ann with a minor set of changes can definitely work within today's more open audiences. As the Barbie movie and cartoon shows like adventure time can definitely tell more mature elements while having a childish presentation. It's a shame such a shoe didn't get recognised for what it does extremely well. Media today doesn't really try to smile and take away the power at the bleak parts of life like death, Suicide and abandonment.
Have you seen Mark Baker in Smithereens? The movie is on TH-cam but he’s credited as Roger Jett. He’s in two scenes, one at the 20 minute mark and another at the 50 minute mark and it’s glorious. I found a copy of Swashbuckler on VHS for $3 and bought it and get this if you have seen it. He’s MUTE. He doesn’t say a WORD! My heart shattered. But he is still beautiful.
@@shinshokulc Yay! Another Mark/Raggedy Andy fangirl other than me! Hello! Thanks for bringing this into the light of day. Now I have a good visual on what the musical looks like. What really surprised me was that this version had MacIntyre Dixon as the father. Many thanks, and my love and respect goes toward Ivy and Scott for becoming a real life Raggedy Ann & Andy. You guys are adorable!

Hi Frankie! I don’t know if you or the Rag doll team reply to comments here often but listen… there’s something else maybe you and the Raggedy team could end up trying to find, but according to IMBD in the “Musical Adventure” 1977 trivia (it’s 3rd from the last two facts), Mark Baker actually reprised his role as Raggedy Andy in 1983 at some stage workshop in some Raggedy Ann and Andy show at the Empire States Of The Performing Arts In New York, unfortunately when I try looking this up, I can’t find footage or anything about it and the person who made the claim didn’t exactly give enough information about it either, (only results I get is about this musical, so he either was supposed to actually play Andy for this (either auditioning and didn’t make the final cut, obviously), or he was cast as him for those bootlegged school play Ann and Andy shows that are still done to this day), but if some footage of this mysterious play is actually out there with Mark being Andy I’d love to see it if it’s true whatever version of it if it exists just waiting to be found! 😊
The show handles mature themes well without being preachy. Ivy Austin's acting is incredible and carries the entire show, but most of the songs are forgettable and sound the same, except for "What Did I Lose?" and "Blue". Some characters are bland, especially the villain Mr. D, which is disappointing since villains are usually the best part of musicals. Unfortunately, Mr. D is not an entertaining character, he was never threatening nor scary. I don't hate the show, in fact, I think it's an improvement from the 1977 animated movie it's based on, story-wise. The problem I have with the show is that people make it sound like it's a mind-blowing Tony Award-worthy spectacle when it's only a harmless musical for children. I would say the show is okay, not bad, but it's nothing to write home about.

Yo también lo amo 🥺🥺
oh my god!! i remember pouring over everything i could dig up from this back in 2016/17--the demos, a pdf of the playbill, every scan of a newspaper review i could find--and feeling so bummed that i'd never get to see it. thank you so much to everyone who worked hard finding this, it is more even insane than i ever could have hoped for.
Watching it now, I've got a few things to say:
Dark Themes -- I'm totally fine with it being centred around a "dying" child.
Omg that's awesome. Where can we read the updated script?

It's fascinating that this play is both very similar and completely different from the movie.
I would love this as a album on Spotify 😭

… this is a real fever dream of a musical. NGL this must have been haunting to watch as a child 😂
I truly never thought I’d see this day thank you to everyone who made this possible!
I found out about this from TikTok! Raggedy Ann was the second role I ever played but it was in Babes in Toyland. So cool that this was recovered!
From what I heard here, the audience seemed to actually enjoy the play.

i first heard about this musical right before the pandemic started. if there was any piece of lost media i wanted to see found the most, it was this one. thank you
edit: if this ended up with a revival, i could see it being meant for older audiences rather than children. like of course the racism and pedophilia needs to be cut completely. but with musicals like dear evan hansen having shown that modern audiences can handle darker themes, this show could be a hit with the people who grew up with raggedy ann dolls. it just needs a bit of tweaking done to the script and advertising that clearly shows who the audience for this show is.
ITS HERE
Three cheers for the RARE!
We're so glad to find people who love the show! You have a copy? Is it this production or possibly a later one?
Im currently watching the footage now and I just wanna say this. Thank you so so SO much for doing this for us. I don’t think anybody who likes this show would have been able to see it if it wasn’t for you guys. I’ve liked this musical probably for around 4 years now and I just remember thinking when we were gonna get footage and just hoping that it would come soon. Just seeing it now is everything I need. Hopefully we can try to revive the show and make it popular but for now,
Thank you.
Oh my God they found it... How am I so late to the party on this? I had to do a double take when I read the title.
13:09 thats shit is so creppy like waking up and seeing your rag doll converted into a full grown woman made of fabric and talks like a little kid on the middle of the night while she tries to take you god knows where
OMG GGBG PFP
This is amazing! Im so glad the footage was recovered!
Now I know why the kids were scared they weren’t scared of the play they were scared of the background in ragdolly JUST LOOK AT EVERYONE SOBBING IN THE BACKGROUND😭 52:15
When I tell you I am freaking out!! In a good way! I can’t believe we can finally see it!!!!
We can now make compilations of this!
Yay!!!! I’m so glad everyone finally gets to see what we’ve been working so hard to accomplish. Thank you to Vinnie, Frankie, and Garrett for leading the way!
ITS FINALLY HERE
I'm a few months late to the party, but I'm utterly impressed how much footage and overall info you guys have found since the last time I descended into the Broadway rabbit hole that is Rag Dolly. Seriously, keep up the good work, and I look forward to what the future holds for this little gem. Hell, as a working actor myself, I'm more than ready to slip my headshot under the door for General D (or at the very least Wolf, I ain't picky)

This is so cute and funny. I am glad that it is released to the public.
YASS!!! Im so happy u were able to get the footage & show it to the world. ur amazing gwyn, n so is everyone else involved with this project. keep up the good work everyone!
Andy is just as loveable as he is in the animated film and the cartoon series.
Seeing this thumbnail in my feed actually made me yelp loudly.
ok, I watched it, I'm crying :,) this was really beautiful, REALLY. I am at a loss of words of how much comfort and happiness this bringed to me...
OMG I GAVE UP ON LOOKING FOR THIS BUT NOW IT'S FINALLY FOUND!!
Omg tysm!! 💖💖
Woah - as someone who remembers the movie very fondly (and loves Joe Raposo) I heard about this show back when there was nothing, then there was one very low quality recording - it's amazing it's gotten this far. Congratulations!
that had such a cute ending!!! I dont think they could've gotten a better actor for any of the characters, especially Andy and Ann
I'm INLOVE WITH THIS! I am now gonna try and find lots of information about this! Thank you so much!❤
OMG!!!!!!! IM SO GLAD IT WAS FOUND AGAIN!!! Im so excited to watch this after im done with school stuff. waaaaaaa IM SUPER HAPPY
HOLY FUCKING SHIT MAN MY FRIEND HAS BEEN TRYING TO FIND A RECORDING OF THIS DAMN MUSICAL FOR MONTHS
How wonderful that this exists... Both the footage you've posted here and the RARE group! Keep up the good work! I look forward to seeing more of it!
This musical is so interesting 😭 I’m glad we’re still able to see this kind of footage especially when it’s so hard to find.
This is amazing!
you’re right! its rumored that there’s footage of broadway, moscow, AND the kennedy center!!
@@gwynfromRARE I hope everyone could pitch in and find those too! ^^ For now though, I'm so happy we got this! ^^

Thanks for bringing this into the light of day. Now I have a good visual on what the musical looks like. What really surprised me was that this version had MacIntyre Dixon as the father. I remember first seeing him as Cole Oyl in the Popeye movie. (The father of Olive whose running gag was reading his newspaper and saying "You owe me an apology!")
Many thanks, and my love and respect goes toward Ivy and Scott for becoming a real life Raggedy Ann & Andy. You guys are adorable!

I really like this play and I wish we could have seen it on broadway still (without all the problematic stuff)

Ahhh its here aksndnsb now I can force my friends into watching it with me

This is wonderfully shot.
As a Raggedy Ann fanatic I thank you from the bottom of my heart
THANK YOU FOR THIS IVE GENUINELY WANTED THIS FOR SO LONG
The show handles mature themes well without being preachy.
