Raggedy Ann: The Musical Adventure (aka Rag Dolly) is a dark fantasy musical with a book by William Gibson and music and lyrics by Joe Raposo. It's based on the children's stories by Johnny Gruelle and is loosely related to the 1977 feature film Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure, which included variations of a few songs. The story centers on Marcella, a dying young girl whose toys come to life and take her on a magical adventure to meet The Doll Doctor, in hopes that he can mend her broken heart. The show created a controversy in Albany, it was a renowned sensation in Moscow, a notorious flop on Broadway, and it went on to develop a cult following through bootleg recordings. I remember back in 2016 when all I had of this musical was the demo soundtrack and a single wikipedia article. Now, honestly thanks to R.A.R.E., I was able to see at least one rendition of the performance in its entirety. Something I was fully convinced would not happen due to the unlikelyhood of a recording even surviving. And yet here we are! In all its 144p glory!!! hehe
Just remembering being in highschool and forcing my friends to listen to the soundtrack. Staying up til like 9 in the morning working on the Lost Media Wiki page. Spending Way Too Long cutting up the audio from the demo tape soundtrack to post on here. Awkwardly talking to actors and other folks that worked on the musical just to ask questions about the show itself since information was still so scarce. Buying a copy of the script with a friend and us losing our damn minds because we HAD the SCRIPT. It was honestly a lot of fun, the search was hard since there weren't too many folks looking for it at the time, but it just made the little things feel like big rewards. And it was a really fun part of my life tbh! Lots of warmfuzzy nostalgic emotions when I think about this musical, and Raggedy Ann in general.
I'm so thankful for R.A.R.E. and the work everyone did to make this happen! We now HAVE the footage of the musical!!! At least one of the versions. And its absolutely nuts. I honestly wish I could go back in time just to tell Teenage Me that this musical DOES still have SO MUCH existing content surrounding it and that I just have to look a little harder. But the suspense of waiting 5 years kind of made it worth it, tbh.
IDK What I'm saying is I'm happy footage has been found, R.A.R.E. is super epic and also this musical is rlly weird i love it but also its rlly. weird. its rlly weird. isnt it weird? super weird.
frankie thank you so much for all of the work you've put into this crazy musical. without people like you there's no way we'd have ever gotten this far. what you've done is seriously groundbreaking for this show and it means so much to me now having discovered the love i have for this show myself. you are incredible, I'm so happy to have you as a part of this weird little Rag Dolly family.
If it wasn’t for you this musical would most likely be completely forgotten about and I’m so glad you provided people with all of this stuff. Next step is to have a modern performance which I would happily help with if it actually happened

The fact that this didn't get a cast album is criminal. Probably only 1,000 people would have bought it, but every one of them would have turned around and written a musical.

😏
@@AlolaMaskedYT I completely agree.
Very funny andy
@@jeremiahedwards4771 He is. Andy is just silly and loveable.
Fun fact: Mark Baker (MA Andy), earlier on reprised his role as Andy for this musical in 1983 and apparently was supposed to officially be Andy for the final 1985-1986 musical, unfortunately, upon finding out Ann was gonna have a bigger lead role, for unknown reasons he unfortunately just dropped out of the musical silently all together and in the end Scott got the final Andy role alongside Ivy…
I REALLY hope we can track down this early version with Mark as Andy one day, it has to be out there filmed somewhere… there’s rumors the songs are out there and on the R.A.R.E. Site, there’s a black and white photo of Ivy as Ann and Mark as Andy! 😊
There is a photo of him as Andy alongside Ivy Austin as Ann floating around its super easy to find i hope that helps
@@AliTetik-y7twhere can I find them though??
@@TheFandomKid just search Mark Baker and Ivy Austin Raggedy Ann musical on google and you will find an old newspaper photo of the pair in their roles
Ignoring the issues like General D hitting on Marcella and the racial stuff with the panda, this is a pretty good musical and gets really deep when you think about the whole abandonment issue.
I wish this musical was more well-known.
Absolutely
ignoring the controversial parts and stereotypes this musical is pretty great. love the costume design, 'specially the shooting star gal's.
I am used to the way the Raggedy siblings behave and get along with each other in the animated movie, so it is a bit surreal to see Ann scolding Andy like that in this Broadway musical, lol. Overall, the play isn't too bad. I do like how Marcella clings to Ann during the Mother scene near the end, as if the doll is actually her mother. ♥
I agree, it is so sweet.
Praying that this show gets revived at some point! Id love to see more casts, maybe even a high school script! This'd be so good for schools.
For those of you wondering what is said at 0:42, it's this: "Good evening. As is our tradition at ESIPA, following this evening's performance, the company will meet with you in the lobby. Thank you, and enjoy the show."

We’ve talked to Scott over zoom for Andy’s birthday and we do know Ivy, not so sure about the rest of the cast but that would be incredible!
@@LyricNear Are you ever gonna record like a live-stream from Zoom with Scott and Ivy on here? That would be cool! ^^
This show is clearly a work of art. It’s like the stage was once a blank canvas and all the cast and crew are the paints and paint brushes used to bring it to life.

YES!! I'm so glad that the show is finally available to the public! After working for over a month writing captions, I'm ecstatic to be able to share this amazing show with everyone :)
You're job is so underrated, great work!
Hey, thanks for uploading the songs separately from the rest of the musical! I can have them on my mp3 now! :D
I remember sitting in a call outside of the RARE server and finding out that the footage had been found and almost screaming out loud. Now, I can let it all out ienoeniJHhh
I learned about this show back in 2017. Back then, there wasn't even the audio to go by, and the idea of a revival seemed unfeasible. I'm so grateful for the Raggedy Ann Revival Effort for their time and energy, it was all so, so worth it. Fingers crossed to be able to help revive this miracle!!
Now that this footage has been discovered, I wonder if it will now be licensed and available for schools and community theater productions. It's pretty cool. It was a hit abroad and in Russia before it bombed on Broadway. Sad. Maybe 1980's America wasn't ready for something this dark.
One day!!! That's the goal!
unfortunately, this show is a legal mess. however, RARE is working hard to aquire the copyright and/or licensing for the show, so it can be performed again!
I only discovered this musical on May 4th, 2021. But the almost 4 months of knowing about it and being interested in it, I met new friends along the way, shared talents, hobbies and interests. And some of these friends are the reason why I know about this entire franchise! I'm so thankful and grateful of being a part of this wonderful fandom/community. I just want all of you to know that i love you all so much!💖
I found out about the musical after watching the review by Colin LooksBack. I love the music, including some songs added to the stage version like Diagnosis.
I thought the plot of the film was unfocused (even by the standards of a kids film). After learning that the stage version's plot was significantly different (and darker?) I was really curious to see what that would be like. I never expected to see it, and I didn't know a script existed either.
Watching it now, I've got a few things to say:
Dark Themes -- I'm totally fine with it being centred around a "dying" child. I was very ill when I was little and I think the play really captures how anxious a serious childhood illness can make parents. Plus how they try to hold things together (or fail to, with alcoholism etc). Also how the doctors are so detached that they don't seem to take any of it seriously. There was a lot of relatable stuff in there that I think was handled really well.
Panda -- Honestly, Panda is very easy to "fix". I'd say either (1) get rid of the "Chinese" robe / clothing and change all the lines to standard English, i.e. get rid of any accents or broken English. Just have them be a wise bear like Winnie the Pooh etc. Or (2) literally just remove them from the show. I don't think they ever even do anything significant to the plot? Even Baby has a more significant interaction (with the Mother in the forest).
The Plot -- Oof. Where do I start? This is the biggest issue to me. I love what the story is trying to do, but it comes across as very confusing. If the show was put on again I think the script would need to be partially rewritten.
It's unclear what the characters want. Marcella wants to get better (of course). Apart from that she wants to find her mother and father. And she's following them across the country (?) Maybe it's just me but I had a REALLY hard time making out what was going on in the video.
I assumed General D was a metaphor for Death? Something that's been following her for a while since she's been told she's critically ill. That's great, but it seemed to drift away from that focus? With magic rings, and her old bird and dog reincarnated and... Omg, whoever wrote this, please pick something and stick to it.
Sexual Themes -- I didn't mind the dark themes. But the sexual themes... Yeah, that was weird. Just every now and then something would come up. General D wanting to take Marcella as his bride and some of the lines around that made me feel very uncomfortable. And then there was the extended pole dancing scene -- I honestly can't believe that's in a Raggedy Ann Musical.
Well... This turned into an essay. Anyway, if you're reading this, thanks for hearing me out :) and maybe chuck the video a like, too
The revival effort has finished the first draft of the rewritten script. I think you'll be pleased to know that all of these concerns have been thoroughly thought through and addressed within the reworked script!
Omg that's awesome. Where can we read the updated script?

i first heard about this musical right before the pandemic started. if there was any piece of lost media i wanted to see found the most, it was this one. thank you
edit: if this ended up with a revival, i could see it being meant for older audiences rather than children. like of course the racism and pedophilia needs to be cut completely. but with musicals like dear evan hansen having shown that modern audiences can handle darker themes, this show could be a hit with the people who grew up with raggedy ann dolls. it just needs a bit of tweaking done to the script and advertising that clearly shows who the audience for this show is.
I would love this as a album on Spotify 😭
It's fascinating that this play is both very similar and completely different from the movie.

Thanks for bringing this into the light of day. Now I have a good visual on what the musical looks like. What really surprised me was that this version had MacIntyre Dixon as the father. I remember first seeing him as Cole Oyl in the Popeye movie. (The father of Olive whose running gag was reading his newspaper and saying "You owe me an apology!")
Many thanks, and my love and respect goes toward Ivy and Scott for becoming a real life Raggedy Ann & Andy. You guys are adorable!
This is so cute and funny. I am glad that it is released to the public.
I've had a copy of this for nearly 20 years, and dearly love it. This is one of those rare musicals that was considered an off Broadway flop, only to gain a huge fanbase years after it was thought lost & long forgotten.
"Rag Doll With A Candy Heart" was actually the original name when the idea of transferring the 1977 "Raggedy Ann And Andy's Musical Adventure" movie to a stage production. It went through dozens of rewrites of both script & score to get to what we have here.
The story is every emotion rolled into one, and is almost magical. As for the score, except for needing a much better overture and maybe a full cast post bows reprise of "I'm (She's) A Rag Doll", the rest of the score should be left alone. Because, it's nearly perfect.
Enjoy this wonderful underrated and underappreciated beautiful production. You'll laugh, cry, and scream.
We're so glad to find people who love the show! You have a copy? Is it this production or possibly a later one?
Don't get me wrong, the actors are putting their all into this performance, but my goodness the script is weird. The plot was disjointed, and the dialogue at times bordered on being complete gibberish. I'm not sure how this got on stage without anybody coming out and asking what the heck it all meant.
agree. they only had FOUR MONTHS to write, stage, learn, and build everything for the show!! they did wind up making a much cleaner, more concise version down the road, but once it got to Broadway it had a whole bunch of NEW problems. Hopefully with the planned revival we can have the best of both worlds.
ITS FINALLY HERE
Woah - as someone who remembers the movie very fondly (and loves Joe Raposo) I heard about this show back when there was nothing, then there was one very low quality recording - it's amazing it's gotten this far. Congratulations!
I think that something like Raggedy Ann with a minor set of changes can definitely work within today's more open audiences. As the Barbie movie and cartoon shows like adventure time can definitely tell more mature elements while having a childish presentation. It's a shame such a shoe didn't get recognised for what it does extremely well. Media today doesn't really try to smile and take away the power at the bleak parts of life like death, Suicide and abandonment.
I'm INLOVE WITH THIS! I am now gonna try and find lots of information about this! Thank you so much!❤

I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY ACTUALLY FOUND IT AAAAA
The show handles mature themes well without being preachy. Ivy Austin's acting is incredible and carries the entire show, but most of the songs are forgettable and sound the same, except for "What Did I Lose?" and "Blue". Some characters are bland, especially the villain Mr. D, which is disappointing since villains are usually the best part of musicals. Unfortunately, Mr. D is not an entertaining character, he was never threatening nor scary.
I don't hate the show, in fact, I think it's an improvement from the 1977 animated movie it's based on, story-wise. The problem I have with the show is that people make it sound like it's a mind-blowing Tony Award-worthy spectacle when it's only a harmless musical for children. I would say the show is okay, not bad, but it's nothing to write home about.
Thank you for doing all the work to find it! Sharing this to get the word out!

one day you might be able to! working on it :)
Hi Frankie! I don’t know if you or the Rag doll team reply to comments here often but listen… there’s something else maybe you and the Raggedy team could end up trying to find, but according to IMBD in the “Musical Adventure” 1977 trivia (it’s 3rd from the last two facts), Mark Baker actually reprised his role as Raggedy Andy in 1983 at some stage workshop in some Raggedy Ann and Andy show at the Empire States Of The Performing Arts In New York, unfortunately when I try looking this up, I can’t find footage or anything about it and the person who made the claim didn’t exactly give enough information about it either, (only results I get is about this musical, so he either was supposed to actually play Andy for this (either auditioning and didn’t make the final cut, obviously), or he was cast as him for those bootlegged school play Ann and Andy shows that are still done to this day), but if some footage of this mysterious play is actually out there with Mark being Andy I’d love to see it if it’s true whatever version of it if it exists just waiting to be found! 😊
This is wonderfully shot.
