Houdini On Mushrooms Pt.1: Softbody Mushrooms (Vellum + Pointdeform)

  • This is the start of a new mini-series on fundamental Houdini techniques. Demonstrated using mushrooms. Of course.
    We’re starting off by setting up a softbody simulation in Vellum and then using Houdini’s point deform node to transfer the low resolution simulation results onto high res rendering geometry.

      Also, how to get point deform to match the high and low models by an attribute, so if you have a more complex model where the models are close to each other, low_shroom1 will only deform high_shroom1, not high_shroom2.

    I love you work and I'd like to make a formal request. How to build basic things needed for the average VFX Artist.
    Simple fire.
    Simple water.
    Sticky blood.
    Simple stringy Slime/Drool/Honey.
    Simple Glass shatter.
    How to make things like fire water and destruction slow motion.
    Growing vines that wrap to a moving object.
    Simple bullet tracers.
    Simple disintegration effect.
    Easy to set up rigid bodies and destruction.
    Easy to set up soft body dynamics that connect to animated characters. Fat jiggle ect.
    The easiest fastest way to put a cloth simulated shirt onto an animated character. Or a dress.
    If you could teach an easy way to press a face up against glass I'd be blown away.
    All artists will constantly run into a need for these things while working in the industry.
    Stay simple and basic. Don't assume we know anything. Easy to understand from an absolute beginners perspective. Using Vex coding is cool and important but as a beginner I know I will forget it the second I'm past that part of the lesson but in the instance of the raspberry it just wouldn't work and its not like I can ask you why (I'm dyslexic so I'm gonna have a hell of a hard time with that). At that point from my perspective Houdini just doesn't work and it makes your tutorial hit a brick wall if I need to work to continue. Assume we came to you to solve a very specific problem and we don't know Vex.
    For instance I need blood for a zombie to getting shot in the head. The blood need to eject out of his forehead and hit the wall, stick to it and slowly realistically drip down.
    I need to control the amount the velocity and be able to art direct the splat on the wall or ground. I do effects like this constantly.
    That may be extreme for TH-cam of course but you can see the artistic challenge in achieving that effect. And the best part is that it's a reusable effect that can be built upon.
    More making of practical things that artist would reuse. Doughnuts are cool but when are ever going to need to make a soft body mushroom a doughnut or a Raspberry compared to fire water and destruction? Also how to export these project to other software's such and Maya and 3DS Max. Blender is popular but most post houses don't really use it so its usefulness has a half life. Focus on the things that people will need and run into constantly. Of course these are all just suggestions. Your content is great. Your teaching style is great. You have some of the best Houdini tutorials on the internet. But this is what I and many others like me in the industry are looking for. This is in no way a criticism of any kind. In fact you're too damn smart for me and others to keep up. Boolean denting is awesome but in three years of working on the Walking Dead I cant think of one time I would have need that. So teach me a fast simple setup for something you know I will need that I can reuse over and over again. I hope this comment finds you. Because I'm more than willing to pay to learn these things.

    Hi! Great tutorial!
    What's the difference in pinning to animation through the tab that is available when we have the "cloth" preset in the "vellum constraints node" and in pinning to animation by using a new constraints node ,set to "Pin to Target" preset and then doing it there?
    I would assume none but except if I am doing something completely stupid when I try the second way the roots of the mushrooms go haywire. Reason I was trying this is because I was trying the new Tetrahedral Softbody setup which is supposedly better and in this one we lack the pin to animation slot.

    • @harima40
      @harima40 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry nevermind I got it. It's just that the grouping and animation has to happen after the solidconform. :)

    • @Entagma
      @Entagma  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heyhey,
      Breaking the mushrooms would be a tad bit more involved as you'd have to pre fracture them and use constraints to hold those parts together until a breaking threshold has been reached. But yes, definitely doable.
      Cheers, Mo
