I knew Republicans had become unhinged when a friend told me he liked Sarah Palin because she makes "liberals heads explode."
She is ,without question, the absolute best political commentator on television today! I love her a little more every time I see her show, and miss her when she isn't there. She's a classy lady, and brilliant to boot! The fact that she's also a recovering republican doesn't hurt either. Maybe she can help others who suffer with this condition to see the light, and that it's indeed never too late to seek help. Hope springs eternal!

The change in the Republican party goes much further back than 2008. I noticed it in 1985 (actually that was a culmination of events starting around 1964).
It actually started in 1948, when the GOP lost its fifth straight presidential election and turned on its own Eastern "Establishment" wing. It became a Southern/Western party at that point, especially in using its race-motivated "Southern Strategy" in 1964 and 1968, and the 60s also saw the beginning of the GOP's never-to-end vendetta against the media. Roe v. Wade resulted in the Republican "Religious Right" and the mid 1980s brought us the yammering right-wing "talk radio" noise machine. Bush/Cheney proved to be a catastrophe, and if that wasn't enough, along came Trump.

Yes, the South won the Civil War when the "Party of Lincoln" could no longer deal with Southern trouble-makers and simply gave up (i.e., ended Reconstruction), and 90 years later took advantage of sweeping civil rights laws to "flip" the formerly-Democratic "Solid South", giving new life to "Dixie." Throw in the utter corruption of the Grant administration, the Robber Barons, the stealing of the 1876 presidential election, the corruption of the Harding administration, the deregulation that triggered the Crash of 1929, the orgy of "red" hunting in the 1950s, the out-of-control "Moral Majority, the flagrant GOP opportunism that followed 9/11, Bush/Cheney debacle of 2008, and if all that was not enough, now there's Trump.

Here's where I've gotten to with conservatives...they're all potentially really nice people. But the farther you get away from a conservative, the uglier they look, because right-wing ideology is more selfish and less giving on the big picture. I think conservatives are generally mistaken in their assumption that the world around them just happens, as opposed to being something good that is made by people functioning in liberal society. The more moderate a conservative is, the less-bad they are on the big scale. But I don't really understand even having moderate conservatism. At some point, conservatism conserves the powers that be, and that always contributes to more oppression than freedom, more poverty than wealth, and just growing inequality in general. That's bad for the quality of life of most people, and for the health of society itself.
I've spent a long time trying to make sense of conservatism, and with all due compassion to the individuals who feel it makes sense...we're squishy neurobiological creatures and it's hard to separate ourselves from the world we want to see. I have come to the conclusion that, the farther right someone is (and at some point, it does circle back to the far left, that's a different discussion...), the more they've tied their selfishness and fear into the mechanisms by which they change the world. The spectrum of far right to sensible liberalism is effectively degrees of that mistake in thinking applied to practical issues.

I only recall her from the "The View." Even though she bent over backwards to distance herself from conservative policy I see they still shitcanned her. NBC is as anti-Republican as any of the news outlets. Perhaps even more with MSNBC.
There are reporters who report the news without bias and then there are opinion journalists who give their opinion of the news and events.
The CNN and MSNBC reporters have forgotten that and now terribly slant coverage. Shows like Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon are expected to have an opinion but the rank and file reporters in the old days wouldn't even have raised an eyebrow lest they be considered partisan. CNN and MSNBC tossed any pretense of integrity out the window the moment the 2016 election was called for Trump and it was sad. But it was expected. The executives of their companies advised their newsrooms to drive the low road the entire campaign and they complied.
