Seriously though, CGC has been in business for a quarter century and they STILL can't print their labels centered properly??? It's almost ironic to give a book a 10 with an off-center label.
I agree with you. I have been collecting books since 1980 and I have trained myself with condition and maintaining my collections as i bought it. With that, I couldn't part with my books for someone else's opinion of what they think the real grade is. If I sell my books the buyer should have a chance to examine it inside and out to agree or disagree with my asking price. I have seen 9.8, 9.9, and 10 with crazy amount of $$$, but are they really that grade specially when the cover makes the book look shiny. As a collector we all try to pick the best condition right off the rack. I know I do. I like the old style grading of Poor, FN, VFN, and Mint But I do understand the numerical grading. I like it when someone sends theirs for grading and not mine and buying them new with no hustle in waiting just to be disappointed on arrival after grading. I buy slabs only when I like an issue for its protection it offers. but all my books have double back boards and 2 mylar for the 80's size and modern size to fit.
Very much agree with you, and my personal stuff I treat differently on how and why I collect. And I want people to be happy with what they buy with me, that's why I *mostly* sell raw. And people are generally happy!
I don't really pay attention to slabs at all and that's part of the reason I love this channel so much, it's a great eclectic mix of the hobby beyond just grading. But I've never even *heard* of a CGC 10. Even to someone who doesn't slab or sell comics, this just seems absolutely ridiculous and almost a slippery slope for the industry... With you being a seller, I totally get why you have to play the game and get things graded. Just wanted to say you're hands-down my favorite TH-camr, I understand why this PSA 10 is worrisome but I'm also happy for you.
Thanks for the praise my friend! Had I not gotten the 10, this video probably wouldn't have gotten made, but as you said, you get it. I appreciate the support and I will continue to share my love of comics and my disdain for some of the business around it :)
I have NEVER understood why the ink for 9.9 and 10's is always faded. Get a book that's a .5 and its dark and bold. But a 9.9 or a 10. Lets make it look dingy and faded 🤦🏽🤷🏽♂️
You know how a 1980s PG movie is PG-13 today. Soon buyers will want the date of slabbing factored into the price. “That’s a 2020 9.8. Resubmit for your guaranteed 10.0” 🤦♂️
It was a limited edition print that was release in 3 color ways when the first venom movie came out. It was released by stance as a box set with venom socks, it's long sold out so unfortunately the secondary market is the only place to get them, and they aren't cheap 🫠
I saw a CGC 10 for sale recently for a 1993 Magic the Gathering card and had similar thought of like what standard could a 30+ year old card possibly meet that a decent # of recent cards wouldn’t also meet
I bet it sold for a ton too! Transparency from these grading companies would possibly doom them but who knows what the long term effect would actually be...
Those tops books are made very well and different from most Marvel and DC. Don’t usually have bindery tears at the spine, thus able to get easier 9.9 or 10.0. Get them graded if you have them!
Wow, I've submitted 400 comics to CGC in the past 12 years, and I've received two 9.9s, but zero 10s. Understandably, it's because 90% of my submissions were silver and bronze age. My two 9.9s were relatively modern, and they had/have lots of company, even before gradeflation-gate. Captain America v5 #25 (McGuiness variant), and Walking Dead #100 (Adlard 1:200 wrap sketch cover). But I have several complaints as well, which I won't go into, other than to say they've damaged a few of my books over the years. I know it's a risk with any 3rd party collectibles grading company, but it still sucks when it happens. New subscriber here...great content!
It;'s just one horror story after another with CGC. Still trying to find reason that if "Grading is subjective" then why are CBCS books valued less than CGC who clearly shows they are incompetent? Oh wait " Because GC is king" Great video.
I feel a little dirty grading books rn but still, nothing makes sense with them. And I'll never understand why CBCS aren't equal value, as they should at least be.
But here’s the question don’t complain if you still keep going to them. If you seen rats swimming in your soup I guess you would still stay pass the salt wouldnt you. Dumb asses go to CGC
It's impossible have a true grade 9.9 or a 10 unless you pick it up with gloves right off the pile after it comes off the printing press. By the time a comic is printed, packed, shipped, removed from the box, put on the selling rack it's no better than a 9.8. CGC is now a scam. I'm never sending anything to them.
I dont get my book slabbed but if Im looking for a book and a slab is not that much more Ill buy it slabbed. It helps that I only buy worthless 90s stuff only though
Nice score Dave! Did you notice the new slabs are sealed all the way around now. You can no longer find a gap in them. Can’t believe you got a 10! I’ve actually noticed since the scandal CGC has been more stingy with 9.8’s. My success rate has gone down by about 20% and I submit 50 books a month on average. I’ve only got two 9.9’s and they were both modern card stock. Thanks for the unboxing video!
I'm just noticing that now, I knew something felt different but I see it's seamless. That's a start but still those slabs feel janky compared to cbcs. That's interesting, and also a testament to no consistency with them, if your success rate is going down, you know your books!
@@WestCoastDAVEngers I think they knew all eyes were on them so they tightened up a little bit. That has been my post scandal experience, I’m sure others have had different results than mine.
Been trying to get that damn run for over a damn year now. And I agree .this moving the goalposts thing is horse shit. At least now you've got a cross hobby pop 1 of a low print book. Some horror fan with deep pockets will pay up for that sucker. The original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE is my all time favorite flick!
Nice video Dave! I also sent in my first submissions since slabgate just to do some quick flips, and it felt weird. No gift grades for me though 😭 for long-term holds I (maybe stupidly) dropped off, for the 1st time, like 9 books with CBCS. We all shit on CGC but if there’s no competition this fuckery is just going to get worse
It definitely feels weird, and the more I look at this book, I don't know it's a gift grade but also since there's no transparency from CGC, who knows that the criteria for a 10 really is. I wish I didn't have such a hard time selling CBCS books, because I have a few that I'd love to try but doesn't seem like the smart move. Good luck with your CBCS sub!
I knew before Dave said anything it was going to be a 9.9 or a 10. Of course first thought would be he and Manu broke the scandal and let's give our biggest critics a 10. But I don't think that, I honestly feel if you have been collecting for a long period and have many books, there is one or two books in your collection are just perfect. I have a Jack Kirby Battle for a 3-D World comic book I bought as a kid and i bagged it and put it in a lockbox the week after buying. It's still in that box. No question its a 9.9 or 10, but to say it's a 9.8 would be an insult. Now of course the book isn't worthing anything since it isn't a big book, but the point is there are 9.9 and 10's out there. I am happy CGC finally acknowledges that.
That Xmen being a 9.9 still bothers the fuck out of me. Shit makes no sense. We’re probably gonna see a huge amount of 9.8s being dished out in the future with 9.9 and 10 being the new 9.8. CGC is gonna diminish the magic and over inflate the market. Could quite honestly ruin collecting as a whole
While everyone looks at the shiny thing and drools at the prospect, You know I'll be over here saying "Remember, remember, the slab scandal in December" :)
Holy shit 😅 congrats Dave! When CGC decided to start giving more 9.9/10's, they should've limited it to moderns or ultramoderns. It's way too convoluted and revisionist to start giving them out to Copper and Bronze stuff
It's weird, it's also nonsensical, but if they keep doing stuff like this it gives me a reason to point it out, and let people remember they just keep leaving the dumpster fires to burn and say "look at the shiny thing we have over here!"
That's just another thing I like better about CBCS. If a book is a 9.9....it gets a 9.9 They don't withhold grades then later admit "Yea, a lot of those 9.8's could have been 9.9's, but we just chose not give it it". Not to mention the grading is consistent compared to CGC. Of course, had your book been graded by a different employee, it could have been a 9.4. 🤷
I have 2 books everyone says were 9.8. Came back 9.6. Exact same grader note issue. Have a 9.8 already of one and the 9.6 is in better condition. So anyone who pays double for a 9.8 over a 9.6 is a fool. Strictly speaking it is 100% on the grader.
Seriously though, CGC has been in business for a quarter century and they STILL can't print their labels centered properly??? It's almost ironic to give a book a 10 with an off-center label.
It's hilariously on brand for them, you're right.
"Here's a perfect book in our opinion, but we're gonna make it look as janky as possible!" - CGC
I just got a 10.2!
I just got two 11.0s!
I have the Jason vs Leatherface, series. Maybe I should send mine in.
Take a shot!
That's one of my goal's to get a 9.9 but a 10... WOW.... well done!

Are people gonna start resubmitting 9.8s to shoot for a 9.9 or 10? Will Manu change his name to 10.1 Newsstand? So many questions.
Enjoyable video!
Thank you!!
Drink the cool aid Dave, CGC is giving grades no one understands anymore. As a dealer I cannot understand them anymore.

Thank you! Next year my fundraising goal will grow and I appreciate the kind words!
It took them 20 years and they’re already creeping up on 9.9-10s. In another 20 years they’ll just change it to a 20 point scale.
Oh jeez....it's definitely a possibility 😂
They have a geading standard book available to buy threw cgc
