I just imagine the first purple sea snail that did this. Probably playing around blowing bubbles and wrapping them in mucus, like you do. Other purple snails come by all judgy, shaking their heads when suddenly, the raft floats. Then, that snail gets to reproduce since it survives and teaches the babies how to do this. Those that can do it survive and...natural selection.
