- In this video I hike the very beautiful Big Pine Creek trail to Big Pine Lakes in the Eastern Sierra. This is my first time hiking this trail. My timing is perfect. There are no crowds and the Fall color is off the charts! I make camp at second lake with the majestic Temple Crag in full view.

I made this hike back in the 1970s and again this year. The backpacking gear has changed dramatically, however the scenery is just as beautiful.

the only mountains that I have ever hiked are the Sierras. I am displaced and can only hike them now through video tours such as yours. it is wonderful to experience them again. And even though the experience is second-hand it is still soothing and awe-inspiring to view them through another's eyes.

We will be moving into our motorhome full time. We plan on visiting all the national forests and staying on government owned land without hookups for water and electric. We will get our water from creeks, lakes and rivers as we can, and filter it to use for our needs. We will be bringing our experiences to everyone through this channel with some awesome footage (like yours) once we are on the road. Our national forests are beautiful aren't they? There is so much to experience.

Beautiful colors but brrrrrrr! What a beautiful caterpillar - wonder what kind of butterfly it turns into. Had to laugh - seems like a cheeseburger & shake is sort of a standard after backpack trip meal. Thanks for sharing another adventure.
There is definitely a trade off doing trips during the shoulder season. The upside is crowds are down, the colors are beautiful and there are no mosquitoes. The down side is the days are short, the nights are long and it’s usually pretty chilly/cold overnight in the mountains.
Jim, those caterpillars are all over. The Wooly Bear caterpillar's turn into the Isabella Tiger Moth. I also enjoy taking pics and vids of caterpillars and thus look them up. inaturalist.org is great for putting your photos there to discover what the whatever is. It's free.

Thank you Mike. Yes, I had to scramble down to the lake. I warned people about heading up as I was leaving to stock up on water before getting to the lake. 1st lake looked like it had sites with easier access, but to me 2nd Lake was more beautiful.

Well, few women, can, or are willing to take off to the back country. Some of us guys, would have traded almost anything, for a female, like this. I had plenty of campfires, but very heavily populated by drunken jackasses...
Me and my buddies did a short 3 day backpacking trip October 7-9 . We did an easy new army pass loop. Nights were cold !!!! Thanks for capturing the great views !
Great backcountry, been all over the Sierra but never up that trail. Been up to the campground just below the trailhead, popular spot with some good fishing holes. Wondering why you don't use a lightweight fishing rig and pull some dinner out of those awesome lakes and creeks ? Anyway, great vid...
What a gorgeous hike. I’ve been thinking about going up there. Where did you find water? I would love to go that hike for sure. Way too gorgeous. I’m assuming you need a back country permit. Did you get it at the lodge/store where you parked the truck? Or do you apply online? Smart you brought your liner for the sleeping bag. Those make such a difference. Last time I camped it got pretty cold at night. Was at Big Sur the end of November. Not below freezing but my 30 degree quilt really needed the boost since it almost got done to the thirties. Thanks for posting this.

I believe you when you say you had a great time. There must be someone you could trust, so you could buddy up to go hiking together. I always say, there's safety in numbers. If any problems or threats arise, you could help each other out. Nature is beautiful. I just wouldn't want someone to harm you in any way. Next time I hope you'll think twice about going at it alone. I am planning to retire in 4 years and want to get an RV and do it full time. I hadn't thought about adding hiking to my retirement plans, however, I've been watching your videos and there are so many places that you can't get to unless you do so by foot. What advice would you give to someone who has never done this before but would like to consider it? Where do you start? Thanks for your time!

I day-hiked to Black Lake in Nov one year to photograph the ice patterns on the surface of the lake. There is a mahogany bush up there on south-facing slopes that generates these amazing white billowy seed carriers in the fall. You can see them on the trail to Black Lake. I also like your new bookend template where you review some of your favorite vistas at the end of each hike and finish with one with you in the scene. It’s like scrawling “Cat was here” without defacing anything.
Is there anything better than a chilly morning at camp with a hot cup of coffee?? Big Pine Lakes is another must for the bucket list. Keep these hits a-comin', Catherine!

Great video. Please consider actually carrying your bear spray in your hand. Bears usually give a brief warning but the big cats do not.

Sun rise in the mountains, you can't beat that. And those beautiful colors are amazing.
I cruised on a 40' boat for a few years and found the peanut button on tortilla worked even better if you sliced a banana in two and wrapped it in the tortilla/PB slice. A little potassium and a great taste.

If you really want to see true fall colors you must come to climb on of the presidential's in NH there is nothing like it for fall colors and I have been all around the country.

I was so excited to see this hike but I am sorry you distracted me . You brought me to one of my all time favorite actor's cabin and in such good shape since he died in the 30s . Who can't remember the Hunchback of Notre Dame , the Phantom of the Opera and lest not forget about his son Lon Chaney Jr as the Wolfman and many other great movies who passed away in the 70s .
Willard Wooten he had the right idea building that cabin in that location.

Thank you! I haven’t been using trekking poles because I carry my tripod in my hand. There were only a few other backpackers out there. I did see some day hikers, but it was incredibly mellow considering that trail is very popular. The burger was good. Just a Western Bacon Cheeseburger from Carl’s. lol
Finally got to sit down and watch this, wow! You do such a great job with your videos; filming, editing, music, vlogging and a touch of artistic flair. Go see the Glacier next time, it's worth every miserable step, lol. Take care friend.
