A very special memory of this wonderful musician. His daughter, Esme, was a pupil at the school where I was teaching music. At a parents' evening I bemoaned to him the fact that I was having huge problems trying to find a trumpeter/bugler to play the Last Post at the School's Remembrance ceremony. Without any hesitation whatsoever, and in his beautifully quiet voice, Mr Wallace offered to come along do it himself. And he did. We had one of the world's greatest trumpeters playing in tribute to our War Dead. Can't think of anything finer. It's been my very happy experience over the years that musicians at the very top of the tree are the most humble, and certainly Mr John Wallace is.

I am honoured to have played drums today with - sorry, under the baton of...John Wallace. I have played drums professionally since age 14. I played with some amazing musicians - from my own bands to the legends, Four Tops, Temptations, and the man who started the 60s....Chuck Berry. However, I have never met anyone closer to my spirit than John Wallace. Much love and respect.

Gosh. How many professional musicians out there consider themselves to be "failed" composers: this is the first time I realised JW was on that list also ( funnily enough I only know of 2 professional trumpeters who were able to walk away from playing to make their living as full time composers: Malcolm Arnold and Arthur Butterworth) . However composition's loss was the symphony orchestra's gain and let's not kid ourselves: despite his self -effacing modesty you do not hold down the principal trumpet chair of any professional symphony orchestra (especially one of London's) by simply having enthusiasm - btw what's astonishing is that while he was at the Philharmonia 2 of the 3 trumpeters in the section came from the same Brass Band in Fife! I wish I'd heard the LSO trumpet section when it included both Howard Snell and John: it must've been something to behold live.
