The Aquabats Super Show was hilarious!! Fun Fact: Travis Barker from Blink 182 played in the Aquabats early in his career. Their shows are super fun! They are like a modern day Devo.
He was asked to join when both bands were at warped tour and blink kicked out their old drummer and asked travis to sub in. He jammed so hard they asked him to join and he said only if its ok with the commander
Ska was actually the precursor to Reggae. It was born in 50s Jamaica with bands like Desmond Dekker, The Skatalites & Toots and the Maytals. It experienced a huge surge in the 80s when Jamaican immigrants in England started playing their records to the delght of the working-class British youth. This 2nd wave of Ska infused the island sound with Punk and New Wave influences & included bands like Madness, The Specials and The English Beat. In the mid to late 90s the third wave of Ska emerged from America, mainly SoCal, with bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Catch 22, Buck o Nine and The Aquabats
Circus music, ska, reggae, and polka is all on the ‘upbeat’. So the guitar always lands on the ‘and’ when counting 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. Instead of most all other music that’s on the 1,2,3,4 or the ‘downbeat’. It makes it sound ‘upbeat’ and bouncy so is instantly recognizable. There are some 80’s bands like the police and ‘men at work’ that did it too and you instantly will associate those songs with an island type sound.
Watch "Pick it up" it's a ska documentary. You can honestly probably youtube the opening section, that is animated, to get the history. Travis Barker of Blink 182 was in the Aquabats, his alter ego was Baron Von Tito
This music video was actually from the late 90's! Fun fact, the lead singer is one of the creators of Yo Gabba Gabba!
The red cyclops that shows up in the video was eventually redesigned and used as Muno for Yo Gabba Gabba.
