As someone new to F1, something you may find interesting is that the manufacturing tolerances on the engines are so tight, that they cannot start the engine cold. The pistons would rip the cylinder apart because the gap between the cylinder wall and the edge of the piston head is essentially nothing. They pump hot oil through the engine to warm it up before eventually starting it. Glad to see you enjoyed yourself. Would love to see more F1 behind the scenes content from you.
@@DaveMcIroywhat a strange correction to make. He's taking specifically about cylinder clearance, so yes he's taking about starting the ICE. You could make the argument that turning the car on also turns on the steering wheel display and the tire sensors and any other system, but those don't have cylinders that need clearance.

Been a US fan of F1 since 2006 and it's great to see how much it's grown, and has everyone intrigued like I was the first time I saw these cars go around a corner and learned how the sport works. There's cutting edge tech, innovation, drama, politics, and hundreds of millions of dollars up for grabs.
The hybrid engines in the current F1 cars aren't at all loud. I've been to a race in the V10 era (2004), the V8 era (2006), and the hybrid era (2017), and I didn't have to wear ear protection only during the hybrid engine race.
Absolutely. I’ve been to races since the early 2000s. I’ve literally heard louder vacuum cleaners than the new engines. But Marquez is right about one thing, videos and audio recordings do not capture anything close to what it’s actually like. Especially the V12,10 & 8s, the frequency ranges cannot be replicated. Feeling the thump in your chest on downshifts into a braking zone with the V10s has always stayed with me.
I have been an F1 fan since the mid 80's. I was fortunate enough to attend every F1 race held in Indy with the exception of the last race held there in 2007. To this day, I still get goose bumps when I think about the ear numbing sound the V10s would make. Insane to say the least. If you get a chance to go to vintage races that feature F1 v10 engines, it will be something that you will never forget. Trust me on that.
My son and I went and it was dope. In addition to the noise, which as you pointed out is 100% different in person, the speed at which they come out of a corner is ridiculous. We were on turn 5, only 90 right hander, so they had to slow way down and oh my… they would just jump out of that corner. So dope… going back next year.
I grew up around race car drivers from my first job at twelve and later on a cousin married a guy who built and raced and later his son. So have been a fan for a long time. Growing up in L.A. there used to be the Times Grand Prix and I went to get a couple times and you could drive around to watch the race at different part of the track. Of course the "S's" were always packed with people. So I got to see the real Ford GT's race. Later in life I got to go to Indy 500 and ended up on the 3rd corner. Which like F1 the cars are so fast watching a straight away can be just a lot of whoosh, but sitting in center of the turn you could see the cars slow a bit coming to the turn and thru the turn and speed out. So cars that fast sitting in the turns is probably the best view of the race. Also the sound is amazing people don't realize just how loud those cars are even NASCAR cars are LOUD. Indy and F1 have a kind of jet like sound, but NASCAR and drag racers are a crazy rumbling roar. It really does get into your blood.
Love Marques to have this experience and get into F1 but gotta say, some facts are just wrong. The reason why theylook similar is due to FIA guidelines and the reason the front wings were discontinued was because it was unsafe. It was still really in depth analysis but some aspects are wrong😀
Sure but even within the rules the cars' designs tend to converge. Take this rule set for example. Everyone's basically taken to Redbull's sidepod design after they all started differently, especially Ferrari and Mercedes.
@@nickel36 No, not everyone has taken Redbull designs. RB has a flat top sidepod shape with deep undercut, Mclaren has RB like sidepods, Ferrari has that small gully like side pod top, Hass similar to Ferrari. Aston Martin , Mercedes, Alpine have a deep gully on their sidepod top surfaces. Floor undercut is similar on all but that not the whole sidepod, is it? They cant be any more different man.
@@nickel36no they haven’t, not even close. Next year will likely be the year of the Redbull clones and I doubt there will be full convergence until the end of this rule set in 2025.
The cars all look mostly the same is because the regulations of how you build your car are super specific, you literally HAVE to build similar looking cars to a certain degree. And then within those tight regulations teams copy and/or get inspiration from teams that do well so the cars look even more similar.
F1 cars all looks similar because they are confined within the regulations they compete under. The regulations have become extremely complicated due to teams exploiting grey areas like you've never seen before. FIA hire people to exclusively close loopholes in the regulations. The teams do the same and hire people to study the rule book, they always find a way. The reasons being usually greys area can lead to long periods of dominance, which is not a good thing for the sport. I think the tightly regulated tchnical rules is what aspires great engineering. Working around the confiments of the rules. A lot of people will argue otherwise though.
Back in my day.... Last Adelaide GP 1995, walked into the track "GET YOUR EARPLUGS AND SUN SCREEN" hawkers yelling. Pfft, I'm tough, we'll be right. 1st car to go past, on warm up - we RUN for the earplugs seller!
Adelaide ‘95 was the first race I attended in person. Caught a greyhound 72hrs there and then the same back. Slept in a tent with two other dudes, sandwiched between a camp of Germans on one side, and a camp of poms on the other hand. You could hear the cars warming up in the pits miles from the track. We were in the grandstand on the hairpin so we got to see coulthard go into the pit wall. I was 18 so it was just one huge adventure.
well the fact that all the cars look the same isn't exactly only because this shape is optimal, not even close, it's primarily because of very strict regulation, in fact the 2021 cars were significantly faster and if there were no regs, oh boy would those bad boys be much much faster
formula 1 is a nice experience today I am glad you enjoyed the experience, I have been a fan since the 70s and while its true that its a sport of driving and engernerring when both come together its a thing of beauty. I have watched the cars evolve over the years to now become low flying spaceships that need a team to assist the driver just to drive the car. The physical demands on the driver is never really shown on TV thus lots of people do not understand the G forces that the drivers endure and how fit you have to be to drive a F1 car. Its not like the simulators on PC lol
They hooked me too, and I didn't even get to experience it in person. I really enjoy the sport though! It's so much better when you understand what's going on.
I remember a few years ago at CES, when Nico Rosberg talked to MKBHD and you can tell he had no idea who he is. 😁 You should invite him and do a podcast together.
Someone needs to tell MKBHD about the Brabham BT46, an F1 car with a fan on the back. It sucked air through the floor, generating Venturi downforce, and had to be outlawed after a single race.
you should experience the vibe of the old f1s from the Senna and Prost era...woof what a sound, those V12 and V10...magic. the new F1s with hybrid engines don't have that sound and magic. Hugs From Portugal
It's worth asking the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a tour of the pagoda in May. They show the timing room where they explain how they keep score, understand who's ahead and how photo finishes work. It's pretty cool to see it all in action.
The idea that it was way louder and visceral it is in person ….if you go back a few years when they were running v10 non-turbo engines it was 2x as intense
They look alike because of the rules. The rules pretty much dictates how the cars look, how big the wings are, where the wings are and what can be an aerodynamic surface and what not. Also, the engine type and fuel is fixed in the rules. You can't compete with a V12 for instance, as was possible before they fixed it in the rules somewhere in the '90s I guess. One of the reasons for strict rules about how the car and engine are built is cost control. A few years ago, the top teams spend in excess of $500mln per year. So a team like Mercedes could spend their way out of a disadvantage, just by introducing new parts or redesign the car. Now they can't do that anymore, so the playing field is somewhat level these days. But if you get it wrong, you're pretty much f*cked and unable to correct it for this season...
Marques, would it blow your mind to know that todays F1 cars are actually pretty quiet? It’s hard to describe how epic the old naturally aspirated engines were at 16,000+ RPM. On the plus side, it’s arguable that this level of sound would not be tolerated in city venues like Vegas. I saw F1 back in the V10 days, I haven’t been to a race in the turbo-hybrid era but apparently they’re so quiet you can actually “talk” (yell) to someone next to you with the cars passing. That was simply impossible before. I remember cupping my hands around my friend’s ear and yelling to them, and you still had to wait for a gap in “traffic” on the track or you could not be heard over the raging V10s. Genuinely, painfully loud. Plus there is so much more sound that just isn’t picked up for broadcast TV. The deeper sounds that rumble your body. The small explosions that are like grenades going off when a car downshifting many times in the braking zone. The change in volume when a single car is exiting the pitlane, going from the RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT sound of the engine choked by the speed limiter to the sudden explosion of full volume power and acceleration at the exit. Personally I think it’s really sad that we’ll probably never hear those engines again at their outrageous peak revs. Yes, some are preserved and run but at limited RPM to avoid wear. Those engines were rebuilt for every race, even between sessions.
Should’ve covered some AWS releases too. Amazon Q!!! You cover a lot of genAI, but never heard you talking about any AWS, anthropic, stable diffusion, lama…basically anything outside of Google…and sometimes mention Microsoft. If you talk AI, there’s so much more
Can I point out the reason they look alike is due to the regulations from the governing body. There are key differences due to design and how the engineers are able to exploit the rules. The rules govern the whole car shape and outwards design.
hearing an entire grid of V10 F1 cars is out of this world. it literally feels like the world is coming to an end....i was 14 and i was like fuckin hell
You should also checkout the Mercedes DAS system that allowed them to warm the tyres faster on an outlap after a pitstop. It was outlawed after 1 season of successful implementation by them and others just couldn't replicate it.
I just wanted to add to the explanation on why the cars look the same; F1 determines minimum and maximum requirements (often determined in cm’s or how much something is allowed to bend) for each and every tiny detail of the car. The rules are seriously close in complexity to the laws of a country. Also the system behind it to make sure each and every individual complies.
And this is why, although I care deeply about the environment, nothing will ever replace the addictive, visceral experience of the internal combustion engine😉😉
As a fan of Formula 1 for 35 years and having the pleasure/privilege of attending 34 races in that time, it is fascinating to hear people new to the sport commenting on how loud the cars are. It’s mind blowing and hilarious all at once. As much as it pains me to say, if you liked the cars at Vegas Marques, they’ve got nothing on what they were before they became hybridised in 2014. Where were you all prior to DTS!?!?! The cars are similar now because the regulations since ‘22 have been highly restricted so that the cars will ultimately be built to run equal There are A LOT more rules now. The 2001 Arrows car you are referring to was not raced in Monaco, it was only tested in practice. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a great sport, but ohhhh,… it used to be SOOO much better.
To get a good car engine sound you need several mics that have very high dynamic range, and at least one that is designed to capture infrasonic pulses. Then you need a VERY good sound system that extends to quite low, not necessarily infrasonics but... it needs to go down and have lots of dynamic range. It is not easy, one of the hardest challenges for sound engineer. In the end we still have to make sure it plays well in a laptop so... we cut the low end out, and compress it quite heavily.
I have always wanted to go to an f1 race, but I have been fortunate enough to go an Indy 500 race and its so insane, actually hard to put into words how

7:37 that's Adrian Newey.... He is that man
Their enthusiasm seems influenced a lot by it being in Vegas, curious how they would experience Hungaroring.
formula 1 is a nice experience today I am glad you enjoyed the experience, I have been a fan since the 70s and while its true that its a sport of driving and engernerring when both come together its a thing of beauty.
Looking forward to that F1 video from Marques.
Oh man if only you could've witnessed the glorious v10 days. The sound shook you to the core. Nothing like you'll ever experince.
@mkbhd in F1 lights don't go green at start but they go "OFF" 😅
“Lights out and away we go.” Not sure if there is a more iconic phrase in sports.
I was waiting on this ..... desperately
cant wait for that f1 vid omg
“Oh no…you’re making me interested in this….” Lmao my feeling exactly
And that's with "quiet" modern F1 Hybrid engines. The V10's were just so visceral, shakes you to the core.
There's a reason why everybody geeks out over F1 lol. The engineering one-upping NEVER ends.
you should experience the vibe of the old f1s from the Senna and Prost era...woof what a sound, those V12 and V10...magic. the new F1s with hybrid engines don't have that sound and magic.
Hugs From Portugal
It's worth asking the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a tour of the pagoda in May. They show the timing room where they explain how they keep score, understand who's ahead and how photo finishes work. It's pretty cool to see it all in action.
Yeah I've seen the TH-cam feature about "subscribe". They're making changes and sometimes ALL videos on TH-cam have a set amount of Likes on it
The idea that it was way louder and visceral it is in person ….if you go back a few years when they were running v10 non-turbo engines it was 2x as intense
Glad you made this video
i went to the austin race, the airpods Adaptive Transparency works SO WELL to make it quite, i did the same at a concert recently and it just works.
Marques surprises us again with his breadth of knowledge
This ⬆️
Wahahaha! I love how Marques remembers the X-Wings from the 2000s! It's so hilarious!
Yeah the X wings and McLarens hidden brake pedal
You were on what's called the "pit straight" where the cars lined up on the grid. When 5 red lights go off that's the official start of the race.
As a HUGE F1 fan, I’m SO hype Marques is now hooked
Should’ve covered some AWS releases too. Amazon Q!!! You cover a lot of genAI, but never heard you talking about any AWS, anthropic, stable diffusion, lama…basically anything outside of Google…and sometimes mention Microsoft. If you talk AI, there’s so much more
“When I was a wee lad playing Gran Turismo 5”.. I expected him to say 1. Damn I’m getting old
You should check out the Indianapolis 500. 33 cars doing 230 mph with 300,000 people in the stands, it's mind boggling.
Damn if you think these cars are loud you would have loved the V10s, on a whole different level.
Can I point out the reason they look alike is due to the regulations from the governing body. There are key differences due to design and how the engineers are able to exploit the rules. The rules govern the whole car shape and outwards design.
he said so much louder than expected .... imagine if he was around to see the 1990s F1 era 😃
hearing an entire grid of V10 F1 cars is out of this world. it literally feels like the world is coming to an end....i was 14 and i was like fuckin hell
11:33 looks like the magic phrase is "Subscribe button"
Every car enthusiast need to go to an F1 race event. What you'll witness is the epitome of automotive engineering and technology.
Welcome to f1 fan club
Love to see Marques hyped about F1
8:12 Yes. One form factor. One formula. FORMULA ONE. Now you're getting it.
Just wait till you find the Senna rabbit hole on TH-cam😂😂 - there’s no going back after that
They used to be louder! Try sitting in a Grandstand at Silverstone in the p*ssing rain. When those V10s came out they sent a shiver down your spine.
As an F1 nerd when some asks me to explain an F1 car, I just tell them it's an airplane turned upside down rolling on tarmac....
I haven't seen the Subscribe button glow, but I have seen in one other video when the TH-camr said Like, the Like thumb did a little animation.
Im just excited that you are excited about f1. 😁
There should be Studio Channel video for showing this F1 Experience.
I have to say one of my favorite things about Formula One is that they start exactly at the time they say they will. Not 1 min later
Dang, as soon as you said that the subcribe button glows it did it.
I have always wanted to go to an f1 race, but I have been fortunate enough to go an Indy 500 race and its so insane, actually hard to put into words how
8:52 "In 2001, there was a Verstappen car" 🙃
F1 is literally a science project competition with cars.
Welcome to the fandom Studio Team 😄
You should hear a one with V10 engine, insane
Should have heard the old v10’s. You thought those were loud. 20k rpms. The howl. It’s not even close now.
A DTS f1 fan discovering that F1 is actually a race between engineers and not between the drivers' fanbase on social media 😂
There are two things you need to experience: an air show with fighter jets and a top-fuel drag race event.
