As a kid we had one of the balls around the house and I never knew what it was. When i was a teen and set up a badminton net in the backyard my dad dropped knowledge on us. We played 3v3 Takraw everyday that whole summer. Awesome game.

We have this sport in Thailand too. I tried it when was older but I am not athletic enough. Backflip, kicking the small ball and then landing on your feet ... This is a standard skill that you need to have for this amazing sport. It should be an Olympic sport.

I remember as a little boy, we had one of the Takraw balls at home. I never knew what it was, I asked my dad and he said it was a sport he used to play after soccer when he was a little boy. I’ve been intrigued since then.

IOC asked the sport's name to be change first, which the sepaktakraw association didn't approved. That's one of the reasons why it is still not in the Olympic

Some rules of Sepak Takraw [tahk-RAAHW]:
(1) The ball is made of woven rattan or plastic reeds. It is handled only during the service.
(2) Last touch before the ball touches the ground outside the court boundaries or on your team's side of the net counts as a point against.
(3) Touching the net counts as a point against your team.
(4) The server's none-kicking foot must still be touching the ground inside the center circle at the time of contact with the ball.
(5) Each team is allowed three touches of the ball before the ball is played over the net, and the same player can make two or three of those touches.
(6) Any part of the body can be used to touch or play the ball except the hands and arms.
(7) A match is won by the team that wins two out of three games won. Each game is won by the first team to reach 21 points or above 21 points with at least a 2-point margin above the other team's score.
Sepak Takraw is part of P.E in most schools in SouthEast Asia, especially fun during intramurals. So these athletes basically played this since they were kids and do special trainings as part of the National team. After school or during recess boys would play Sepak Takraw and girls play Chinese garter (A game that you have to cross over a garter without tripping. The higher rounds which is above head, demand agility since players leap with their feet first in the air and they cross over the garter and end up landing on the side.)

@@bravesirrobinn Sepak Takraw has been in existence for several centuries in Southeast Asia countries like Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia etc. When it became part of the Southeast Asian Olympic game, they came up with the rules of the game. It used to be a street game with no official rules as long as you keep the rattan ball up on the air with your foot. Those fancy acrobatic leaps and strikes came out as more professional players are into this sport.

The ball that they used is very hard and when it hits part of your body i.e legs it will pretty much hurt 10x. When i was kid playing sepak takraw in my school felt like my body has been punched and kicked multiple times but nonetheless I enjoyed it although its scary
Sepak ball at 170g is lighter than even a size 1 football... Neither the rattan or synthetic is all that hard, come now. We played with those barefoot and our feet were striking the ball harder than the ball striking anything it hits thereafter. If your body felt punched and kicked, then we would've been cripples...

So I think if this sport is more popular in EU or US (and i hope so) they may have an advantage cause of their physical and if their train the overhead kick skill like Asia. Thai people are professional at flying in the air and kicking the ball. They are growing up kicking the ball in the air.
The standard net height is 5ft and u can constantly witness that their feet are that higher than the net and some players can control their feet up in the air to do a soft touch. They're like doing taekwondo shit with the ball 😂.
Thailand pretty much hard nut to crack. I am fan of this sport. I used to play as killer. But i didn't have any luck to play in state. I didn't get chosen. Training is hell. Our couch make a few circles in court and we need to aim for it. Hundred of back flip every day

i used to play sepak takraw back in my teenage days representing a club as a killer "striker" but have to quit due to an injury coz i landed wrongly and hard and twisted my arm. btw the net is about 5'8 feet tall and the ball is made out of "rotan or rattan" aka cane material that asian mums used to whip their children or criminal gets "caned" in prison. and yes it is damn painful when you try to block and gets hit. 😂😂

It's happening in Bangkok, Thailand. everybody is waiting for the two best country of Sepak Takraw Thailand & Malaysia. Historically both countries are the best in this sport, but advantage will be for the Thailand team because it will be played on their own turf. The net is 5'1" btw. Sepak Takraw is volleyball with football (not american football) mechanics, so foot, head, blocking.
It takes practice and passion. Nth is hard!
