      +ComicsExplained what i find weird with Flashpoint's logic is if Thawn killed Barry's mom by time traveling then the whole universe is an altered timeline which means that Barry saving his mom should just fix things like time traveling heroes do all the time not cause that worst case scenario world that doesn't happen when over time travelers undo time alterations unless that was the original timeline(which we know its not since Barry is still the flash in Thawn's timeline) in which case Thawn is a hero well anti hero

    Man, ridiculous multi reboots like this are why i never got into comics regularly. I know they do some of these to make it easier for new readers to get into things, but for me it has the opposite effect. They can't ever get rid of all the old stuff, because it will alienate old readers, and that makes new/occasional readers like me feel like I NEED to catch up on all the old stuff to understand everything.
    I'd prefer if they just occasionally released summary volumes of all the important points of a character for new readers to catch up with. Otherwise, I'm sticking to the movies and TV shows that seem less interested in injecting themselves into the decades long continuity of the comics.

      +Sjono They have already rebooted multiple times.

      Those films were all standalone films in their own separate continuity. It was easy to reboot. The DCCU on the other hand will have an ongoing continuity that future live action DC films will have to abide by. I wouldn't be surprised if DCCU hit the reboot button sooner than the MCU

    I think it stands to reason that even the most well-versed and expansive collectors find this series of reboots confusing. To be honest, I don't think I will ever truly follow all of this. I do, however, appreciate al the time it took for you to put this together, Rob. This would be a LOT of work, and likely lead to a series of blank stares and empty drinks afterward.

    Just remember dc's policy when in doubt reboot it out

  • @MrBranh0913
    @MrBranh0913 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    DC has actually only had 2 reboots. Crisis and Flashpoint. Every other "reboot" were more retcon events. Similar to how Convergence and Rebirth are ACTUAL reboots, but just reconning new elements into the continuity. Marvel does retcons too, but they kind of "just happen" instead of being explained in an event.
    The reality there has only been 4 cannon superman's. Golden Age, Silver Age, Post-Crisis, and New 52. The same with Wonder Woman, Batman, and other characters. Events like Zero Hour, Infinite Crisis, Final Crisis, and Convergence still retained the same continuity, they just added elements from older previously "wiped out" continuities. Again Flashpoint is the only other real reboot where the super heroes were placed with different versions.

    So let me get this straight, DC destroyed their multiverse after Crisis on Infinite Earths and reformed it into one singular universe, then they literally rebooted that universe in Zero Hour, brought back the multiverse again temporarily in Infinitive Crisis but at the end of that it dissolved back into one universe but then fragmented into 52 parallel universes and created the 52 multiverse? Holy shit that's insane.

Just a suggestion; it'd be great if you could do an in depth breakdown of each reboot both DC and Marvel have gone through over the years would be great. I know I might be asking too much, but now I'm interested in what actually happened in the stories and not just how they affected each multiverse respectively. Thought it'd be a cool idea if your looking for one for your next video series. Just do me a favor and give me a shout-out in the first video if you end up doing that. • @Avarn388
    @Avarn388 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Video, Rob. It is nice to see a longer video. It definitely reminds me of when you first started. A bet with more refinement. While I fully understood what happened in the video, it made me cognizant of one fact; why Comics are so niche nowadays.
    I understand why Crisis on Infinite Earths needed to happen, but essentially all these other huge story events/ "crises" boil down to lack of a cohesive continuity amongst DC. To be fair, there will be no such thing as a perfect continuity. Even in the most robust ones, you are bound to encounter problems. I know this being a diehard EU fan of Star Wars(hence, one of the reasons why I was open to the EU going away. Though, I'll admit the decision was handled poorly).
    Having all these events go down so as to restart with number one's, can be quite confusing to newcomers of comics. Especially, if they are required to have some background information on these events and the writers do not convey this information. I'll always love DC. Especially, for the Marc Wolfman and George Perez run on the Titans and Aquaman. But rebooting yet again after a major event just is going to make it harder, relatively, for newcommers to get into DC comics.
    It is this reason why I loved the Ultimates, as it gave a cool refreshing take(except Ultimatum. Screw that comic). Overall, great work as always Rob.

    I believe that the 'Rebirth' reboot will be heavily inspired or even based on the DCEU films, perhaps they will give backstory to Batfleck's twenty year history, Wonder Woman's 5,000, Superman after man of steel and BvS and the rest of the heroes. This may be done so the comics can sell more. It's called DC 'Extended' Universe after all, maybe an extension of films, comics, shows, animations and even videogames.

    So golden age was "retconing" being earth 2 all this time
    Silver age become the real earth 1
    then they make *Crisis on infinite earths* because money and destroy the multiverse, now making different versions of the same heroes
    this make everything a mess for the fans so they rebooting with *zero hour* erasing the bad stuff
    these new world didn't like so they made a soft-reboot with *Infinite crisis* erasing just little details and adding heroes, with this DC brought old characters and new ones recreating the multiverse
    BUT
    They made an event *final crisis* because money, so the heroes now can travel through earths
    EVERYTHING ITS OKEY BUT
    *Flashpoint* sigh
    Flash changes and fix the timeline rebooting all creating "new 52"
    new 52 didn't like so they made *convergence* bringing all thing back
    and now they make another soft-reboot *Rebirth* (like infinite crisis) erasing fails and adding new stuff

  • @justwungo

    All these reboots really annoy me, especially Flashpoint and Convergence. I kinda feel like they should've at least given the Final Crisis multiverse a chance, instead of almost instantly diving into Flashpoint. I'm just hoping that this next reboot doesn't mess things up more. Whilst Convergence was weak, the end goal and ideal to have every continuity co-exist may sound like a mess, but at least each person could go back and follow the stories of the continuities they liked, whilst not worrying about the ones they didn't. But, I get the feeling the next reboot will just be another New 52, if you know what I mean.

  • @mysticalmonotreme
    @mysticalmonotreme 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if you skipped because of time constraints, but what of DC's brief flirtation of "Hypertime?" From what I recall, it was basically a multiverse of sorts, but with "alternate timelines." Except that it had the main DC timeline, with other timelines branching out from it and occasionally intersecting with each other. Nothing really came out of it though except a couple story arcs from Superboy (Kon-el/Connor Kent's first series) and Flash.
    Personally, I found the distinction between parallel universes and alternate timelines to be a false one.

    You did good job explaining the subject in the time allotted. But DC still had a few very soft reboots leading up to infinite Crisis and before Final Crisis. With a Rebirth here and a Secret Origins there tweaking some of the rebooted continuity. Not to mention trying to bring the Kingdom Come universe into DC continuity and Hypertime. Still a good peak at the major reboots. You can entire episodes of the three Crises and pick apart and analyze the insanity of Final Crisis and Convergence. Love to see more in the future. Thanks.

    This was a pretty solid wide-angle look at what I think has been the biggest issue for DC. I will say though, Final Crisis is the series that made me stop reading comics altogether. Final Crisis was so hard to follow, read very poorly based on how everything was broken up, and had the absolutely most convenient plot devices I have ever seen.
    Bullets that fire backwards through time, Miracle Machines that grant wishes, music defeats Darkseid, Batman using a gun (something the character has always been against, but F that). It was a story that made me question why people consider Grant Morrison a good writer.
    Props for being able to parse through everything. Though there will likely be another event in a year that'll reset a lot of this content as well :(

    new 52 gave a structure to the multiverse, in order for writers to explore creative concepts, while sticking to continuity.
    convergence made everything in the DC Universe canon and valid.

    People seem to forget that these "so many reboots" took place over 80 years of comic history. That's not that many. Christ. This isn't like rebooting Hulk movies 2.5 times in the course of 10 years.

    I think i would have preferred the GL video, if only because it would have been easier to follow, I mean, Good Lord, DC needs to work on clearing some of that mess up. Still, very well explained, thank you.

    I just can't wrap my head around this... Why? I get that in the beginning dc didn't realise how all the new heroes they were creating would spin out of control. It was the beginning of a new industry and they had no idea that if they want to mentain a continuity then contradictions would happen. So one reboot to explain the existence of the multiverse was enough. But then... Well, I do feel the need of periodical reboots, but maybe with less convoluted storylines and not to retcon a hundred things and characters, just to whipe the slate clean for new readers. I think 20 years between each reboot would be great. It would give readers time to age with one iteration the characters and it would allow characters themselves to develop enough. This is comics after all, so besides the main chronology, during the 20 years span you could have stories like the war of jokes and riddles (a "previously untold story" in the mythos of a character) and stories like the dark knight returns, exploring a possible end of that character, even if in the main continuity the character never gets to live through that until the universe is rebooted.
    But as things are right now... I fell in love with miller-era batman and I feel like that's one of the most compelling Batman chronologies (being very long, like the batman from the 40s through the 70s, is also a problem). But then in the past decade we had both the new 52 and rebirth. Amd while some of the other reboots didn't erase Batman's (and most of anyone else's) history, it did sth that for me is far worse: retconning. I wish Marvel and dc would grow more into a james bond direction where all movies are in one continuity and with no retcons, up until a point: namely the Daniel Craig series, which is a reboot. But not a retcon.

    BIG correction: The character that you keep referring to as the Earth 3 Lex Luthor is incorrect. The Earth 3 Lex Luthor was the father to this character, ALEXANDER Luthor. As with the the rest of the Earth 3 universe Lex Luthor and his wife, Lois Lane died (or disappeared) along with that universe's entire existence. Before the destruction of Earth 3, Lex Luthor put his infant son (Alexander) into a space ship and sent him (eventually) to the realm of The Monitor. This story is intentionally a reproduction of the Superman origin.

    I really do thank you for explaining the WHOLE DC Continuity, quite the remarkable thing given that sometimes not even the most hardcore or they`re own writers can`t do it as well .... having said that ... even if DC has great heroes (batman of course, but not limited to him), I prefer MARVEL because even when dealing with multiverse situation the stories are much more cohesive, proof is that .... They`ve only needed 1 REBOOT

    DC should make an event or storyline that explains NEW52 Hal Jordan and his connection to the previous universe. Seriously if his entire history is still canon within his book then he's a walking time paradox in the NEW52. Maybe instead of the universe being rebooted it was only earth itself that was restarted. it would explain why heroes and villains like hal, kyle, sinestro, etc can mention stuff like Emerald Twilight and the Blackest Night but when they go to Earth their minds shift over to a new continuity where none of that happened without ever realizing it. I dunno give us something DC LoL

    What really amazes me, is that once COIE hit, every few years DC went into a reboot. We've had quite a lot of soft and hard reboots and even relaunches in approx 30 years while we let about 40 years of continuity stand previously. I understand that it's a money making business and new 52 isn't so hot right now but DC should have said "screw it we're in this for the long haul" and go hard. I love pre 52 as much as any one but the minute they wiped the history before they should have accepted it and moved on accordingly, and the new readers would come. No more tie ins or major crossovers or alternate universes, just 10 years straight of story and development and letting us love this new characters, but no we're back to another reboot.

    • @LilBitDistributist
      @LilBitDistributist 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rebirth is just a relaunch with various elements of the Flashpoint event being retconned.
      It's not a reboot. Everything that happened in N52 still happened. They are just taking characters and elements from pre52 that people loved and missed, then putting it back. Taking the storytelling back to it's roots but going forward with the newer stuff that n52 introduced.
