  • The Grain Battery Tower defended the UK shores for the best part of a century. Built in the late 1840s to defend the ports of Kent from a potential French invasion, the Tower was also used in the First and Second World Wars before being decommissioned, like the sea forts in the Thames, in the 1950s.
This Grade 2 listed building is an awesome sight, standing nearly 500 metres from the shore. Generally inaccesible , the tide is occasionally low enough to reveal the slippy muddy walkway across the sands.
Today it is a graffiti riddled relic of the past, but played an enormous part in our history and should really be saved as soon as possible. It is addressed as No.1, The Thames.
