With his invasion of Ukraine, Putin is risking the Third World War, an action that we condemn in the strongest terms and which, just like you, has been causing us headaches for weeks now. Our thoughts are with the victims of these senseless games of a power-hungry man and his inner circle. We've been discussing within the BWT team whether to stop our content to give the conflict more space on social media. But as entertainers and content creators, that would be equivalent to giving up our profession. This wouldn't help anyone.
Instead, we decided to donate a fixed amount to support the victims in Ukraine every month from now on. Everyone can do so - at the end of this post, we have a list of verified charities working to help the victims of this invasion. Furthermore, we ask you to become active - e.g. taking part in a demonstration has a much greater effect than expressing your condolences in an Instagram story. Please get informed, but check your sources. The situation is turbulent and evolves quickly.
We will continue to post the content you subscribed to our channel for. We hope to bring you a little piece of normality. Be strong, stand together, and support where you can.

Young peple often can't afford to pay their houses, some even cannot pay the rent. Here are houses seem to be for free. If you have the same thoughts, you may ask: Why are the houses left? Is it possible to buy this houses? Do you want to live there? Earn your money there? What cost ist to make a house fom this wracks and so on. Even in Germany are abdoned houses, Geisterstädte. They are far away from cities and supermarkets, hairdresser and so on. But maybe a group is looking for such a place, it may be an option to resettle there.

Living in a country where buildings over a century are incredibly rare, it's staggering to see such a vast expanse of storied architecture just falling into ruin. I suppose that's been happening since the first towns and cities. We like to say we value the past more than our forebears, but we really only honor it if sufficiently profitable.

I was referring to why so many ancient monuments are lost to us today. Many like to claim that the great ancient temples were razed by fanatic Christians (which never happened), but the case is that what really occured is more straightforward: the religions lost their following, hence their funds from income (especially since Paganism was very exploitative), thus the buildings would end up abandoned. With the passage of the centuries, you would either see them convereted (since there would be only Christians), like in the case of the Pantheon and the Parthenon, or reclaimed by the elements of nature and demolished by people to reutilize the building matterials.
Watching this video makes me understand much better why there is barely anything left in Greece and Asia Minor from the crowded cities of Antiquity and the Middle Ages. I mean, especially for the Medieval Roman Empire, most of their towns were built in almost the same manner with Craco (albeit with a little more stone-masonry and marble). If this town on the video has gotten to this delapidated state in merely 6 decates, indicating that in 6 more it will be nothing but a pile of stones, what would have been the fate of hundreds of towns that were sacked, burned and abandoned due to the endless wars (especially the Seljuk Turks invading in the 11th century?).
I agree with you though. I always feel that there should be a movement for the preservation of as much history as possible. And that from mere internet articles and images, to books and works of art, to whole buildings and knowledge. As a Greek, a civilization that has existed for at least 40 centuries, it freaks me out how much is lost, and how easily everything that has been undercovered can be lost again. One atomic bomb in the center of Athens, and all the museums and ancient monuments are just evaporated into oblivion. Measures should be taken against that, though it often seems to me that since everything is doomed to be reduced to nil, such an endeavour is just futile. Nonetheless, I am sure that if we could instill on people the right mentality, to love history and appreciate the past, which is essentially what defines us, what made us, one could make a lot of money from this, and thus also be able to preserve them better.

This video was powerfully emotional for me. I think of all the lives that came and went in this magical place, all the stories that were told and all the memories that are lost as this place returns to dust. "Vanity, vanity, all is vanity"!

Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to GOD who gave it. “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “All is vanity.”
      Ecclesiastes 12:7‭-‬8 NKJV
Don't forget some lines after that, the ending:
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear GOD and keep HIS commandments, For this is man’s all. For GOD will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.
      Ecclesiastes 12:13‭-‬14 NKJV
Ecclesiastes is a interesting book of the Bible. Everything is vanity, if it is don't lived through und with GOD. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.
      How can I fear GOD?
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear HIM who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
      Matthew 10:28 NKJV
HE is the righteous judge and will punish every sin. Every single one of us sinned against him. Nobody kept all his live all HIS commandments. Just one did it. It was Jesus the Christ. And in HIS wisdom and love he sended his only begotten son Jesus - fully man and fully GOD - to take our sins and pay the price for it on the cross. HE died and rose on the third day, so we can have the everlasting live with HIM.
If we repeant from our evil ways and trust in Jesus as our savior, we can spend the eternity in peace.

I had a vision of what the place must have looked like even as recently as two hundred years ago. Not a lights to be seen just the forrest climbing silently up over the hills. I knew in that moment that civilization was just temporary and the trees would reclaim it all soon enough.

access to that area is prohibited, due to the danger of collapse. You were lucky not to meet the police, you would have received a fine. ;)
The area had to be restored and made safe. But the costs are very high, and there would have been no way to recover the expense over the years. The costs of maintenance, personnel, compared to the earnings derived from tourists, leave no profit margin. It's SAD? yes, but economics is mathematics and if there is a minus sign in front of it, it's not good.
Our Government, in more recent villages with unspoiled architecture, have launched initiatives to repopulate these fantastic places.
In some villages they "give away" the house, in others they rent the house with a symbolic cost of 1 euro. Provided that the inhabitants are resident in that house for a few years.
Some of these villages, as happens everywhere in the world, have emptied because young people prefer the big cities of the south and north.
As an inhabitant of southern Italy and the Puglia region, I tell you that there are many similar, magical, and beautiful places to see. So take a trip to Southern Italy we will be happy to welcome you with our famous hospitality. :)

One of coolest things I did with my friends while in Italy was explore a semi-abandoned town in the south. There were abandoned houses built of stone you could walk in and see everything as the former occupants had left it, many years before. Some houses broke into by robbers with personal stuff and old photos strewn all over the place but that just added to the eerieness of it all. I said a prayer for whoever lived in those houses, hoping their life didn't end in too much pain and loneliness.

    • @PickBit
      @PickBit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Don't be surprised, there is a very practical reason why that is. Here in Italy places like this are worth absolutely nothing. Now before you jump at my throat for uttering such a blasphemy hear me out. I live in Brescia which is basically the industrial capital of northern Italy. My city is not even close to being an art city, yet when you go for a stroll in the center, you literally find yourself walking on relics of the past and even authentic pieces of art. There are boutiques with ancient Roman houses in the basement, there are monuments wherever you go.
Just imagine how costly it would be for the government to publically fund the maintenance of all the minor places that would be worth maintaining...
I repeat, I'm talking about an industrial joint here, just think what the situation is in cities like Florence, Venice or Rome itself. When private maintenance of certain places is lacking, due to abandonment or whatever reason, tough chioces must be made.
Sadly Craco has only the smallest fraction of the artistic value the average italian historical hotspot has and as such it will never receive public funding unless a major discovery is made (very unlikely) or the town gets repopulated (less unlikely)

Population needs to be in balance with jobs, resources, nature and the environment. Having a bigger population in any country than the country can support makes no sense. Access to food, water, shelter, energy and jobs should guide population levels. The worlds population is still expected to add another billion people to feed, clothe and produce pollution. Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Countries need to focus on quality of life for their citizens and not just quantity of life for cheap labor.

In some ways it is preserved in a sense as it was and makes a good film back drop because it was damaged by the earth quake and probably is too damaged to make it practically worth restoring given future risks of similar quakes. Thanks for doing this in English. Looking at this whilst also seeing the senseless damage by Russia in destroying 90% of Mariupol in Ukraine. Such pointless destruction. I've never seen something like this, but I've been a bit too close to a landslide and saw another time an avalanche from a safe distance. Both were really spectacular sights to behold. The only thing regarding buildings, I've experienced was a window falling out of the frame (at work) and an elevator taking a dive (I never used elevators in that building ever again).
