I think that quote sums up the desecration of comedy right now. Standing on a stage with a mic in your hand and a spotlight on you while you rant about your political opinions for an hour only counts as stand-up if those opinions and observations make people laugh. Laughter is literally the metric by which the quality of a stand-up set is measured.
It’s so weird because a lot of what Matted Rife says off stage makes me laugh so much more than what he says on stage

You can make jokes about tragedies and stereotypes but they HAVE to be funny or it won’t be good. Bo Burnham and Tim Minchin are huge because of their dark humor. Shit jokes with slurs and all that shouldn’t even be considered dark humor and it should never be the first thought whenever you bring up dark humor.
Dark humor has evolved and changed to wear its a thin blanket on a huge subject.
The people you talk about don’t make a joke around the offensiveness but just use it as a punchline which has been done and over with. Just because you point out a stereotype and acknowledge it doesn’t make it a joke and people assuming that is all dark humor is, are really annoying.

It’s exactly that. Comedians shouldn’t be held by their audience because of a status quo or pre conceptive knowledge about the comedian.
His jokes were poor and unfunny but he’s playing the game of comedy quite well. Getting rid of people who held him in high regard enough to watch him but not stick by him is great. It’s something he doesn’t want to be held back by while getting other audiences (ofc mainly dudes) to come and watch is a good move going forward if he wants to have true freedom of jokes.
I’m not saying he should’ve have said what he said-and I think the jokes were not anywhere near as put together like other popular comedians from the internet like Tim Minchin or even Bo Burnham-but saying this was a poor decision is just wrong. He blew up incredibly fast and now he has fame? Why would he want to stick to one audience when he could get more people in seats with different jokes. Pandering to one crowd will only get you so far and he knows this, he’s gotten many people to watch that weren’t even aware of him like that’s insane!
On that note, you shouldn’t be wanting to cancel or hurt anybody but some jokes will be hurtful either way so you should make jokes you are proud of. I think a lot of people are assuming he doesn’t have passion, it is dumb to think he doesn’t have passion. If he didn’t he would’ve stuck to his already good thing going.
@@D44RK_Iced_Yogs I totally agree, there is nothing wrong with Expanding one's platform, but wholly alienating your fans on the Gamble that you will gain more fans is just a bad career choice. He wanted to intentionally offend his predominately female fanbase in the Hopes it would gain him more of a male fanbase, but that's risky! He should've slowly started easing into the type of jokes he wanted to make and if he had done it well enough he could've still managed to keep the majority of his fans while getting rid of the personality he didn't want to be associated with. And if I'm being honest, the way comedy is on such a tight leash anymore, he needed to be Actually funny before trying his hand in offensive comedy. Dave Chappelle is a perfect example, some of his jokes are Wildly offensive, but because he's funny and built up such a strong fanbase, he continues to see success regardless of what he may say; Matt's career is too fresh to attempt this and I think this decision will come back to bite him in the ass. I don't necessarily believe that telling offensive jokes should get someone canceled, but it should if the joke isn't funny.

I grew up in Ohio. I have dyslexia and fall under the "special needs" category in school. Kids treated me like I had some contagious illness. Teachers even treated me like I was "less than". It really doesn't surprise me he doesn't have respect for people with special needs. It is honestly disgusting to make jokes about people who don't have the mental ability to understand the jokes.

His blindness to his own hypocrisy is honestly the most infuriating thing. It blows my mind how much he bitches about people offending him without any consequences and proceeds to expect he can be horribly offensive without any consequences because it’s “dark humor”.
His opinion is that you can dislike him but he doesn’t understand why people go out of their way to tell him their hate. And I think that should be the general rule, that we should allow dark humor because stand up is in part where thats done. dark humor is when you joke about dark or offensive topics that you yourself have experienced and are making light of. joking about random shit because its edgy is what children do because they dont understand the situations basis in the real world
Exactly!! I love dark humor when it comes from people’s own personal experiences and their own struggles, because they are essentially laughing at their own misfortunes in a way to cope with their traumas by bringing laughter to a place of sadness. Laughing at other people’s misfortunes and struggles just feels like an attack. It’s okay to laugh with someone, not at someone, which is what I think really separates and defines good dark comedy from bad dark comedy.

He makes nonsensical comedic remarks on a VARIETY of subject and mainly seems to want to confuse people. Matt Rife obviously wishes comedy allowed him to tell even more violent or offensive jokes as a real ‘telling it like it is’ character. That’s how I see it, but I’m sure I’ve got some bias for Theo Von. I don’t engage with his content much, but I think he’s nailing something that Rife isn’t when it comes to telling potentially offensive jokes :)

dark humour and edgy joke is all about perspective. If you tell it from the perspective of the victim it can absolutely be funny AND dark at the same time.
(ex: if a victim of DV would say a joke along the lines of “man if only I was better at cooking maybe I wouldn’t have this black eye” would be a lot funnier despite still being shocking and/or dark).
But when you tell a joke from the perspective of the abuser/oppressor, it’s just not funny. it’s just not fun to hear someone in a position of power go “she probably got beat because she couldn’t cook” because it makes it seem like they’re laughing at the victim, and not the perpetrators.

The point is it's a JOKE and it's meant to make ppl laugh over a not so great situation, not LITERALLY at the victim. It's up to you if you find it funny but comedians aren't responsible for what you find as "offensive" or "upsetting" cause at the end of the day it's on the viewer how they perceive the joke and if you wanna take it the wrong way and be offended, than that's your choice and your problem.

To sum it all up, Lex stated a member of Supermega "SA'd" her, which is now probably not what happened, and she made up an entire story of how she was mistreated by the main guys of SuperMega (Don't know their names, one of them is Ryan? I think).
Ethan made a stream (Which he deleted lol) where he and Lex (Who are a couple after the fallout) laughed and wanted to make them "pay".
Nick made 3 videos, which mind you are DELETED now, calling Supermega bad people, then made one after he got called out, and is now double and triple downing on them. In the last video he essentially threw his friends Leighton and, more importantly, Lex under the bus, and as of now he and Ethan are no longer speaking to each other (Since Lex and Ethan are a couple). He threw all his friends away and blamed everyone except, of course, himself.
He deleted all the videos and made a fake apology that nobody is buying on Twitter just a few days ago, but it's too late. He now lost the trust and subscriber numbers of his followers.
If you need more info on it Just put Nick and SuperMega and you'll see tons of videos on the subject, but I would recommend Tom Dark, ACheeto, Sensitive Society, and Destiny to name a few to give you a rundown on what happened.

Cancelled is when a huge portion of people online, still only a small portion of the entire audience though, form a news story because they are discussing something they saw in a way that makes it seem that the removal of that thing, the joke, would be a good thing. In this case so many people are saying things like “this shouldn’t be joked about” or “dark humor is for someone who has gone through the experience, if you dont experience you can’t joke about” they are trying to convince people that Matt shouldn’t have made that joke. That he is wrong for that and that he should regret it. They are trying to cancel the joke, obviously.
