    "you are not your emotions."
    feeling angry does not mean you are an angry person. feeling jealous does not mean you are a jealous person. detach yourself from your feelings. accept each feeling as they come. they'll eventually go. (and come back!) but that's okay

    this is such good advice. when we are children we're often told things like "don't get angry!" or "don't be sad!" which causes us to label those emotions as bad, undesirable things but if we feel things it can be very unhealthy to just dismiss them. giving them some kind of individuality might really help dealing with them properly. thanks, anna

    • @son0fhobs-again
      @son0fhobs-again 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Purpose of emotions (based on research and experts):
      1. Communicate to self - Anna covered this.
      2. Communicate to others - Emotions communicate just as much if not more so than words.
      3. Motivate - Motivate us to use that emotion effectively to act on what it's communicating to us.
      a. Sadness - get support. (Like in the movie Inside Out)
      b. Anger happens when our boundaries are broken. Anger motivates us to reset our boundaries and make sure they aren't broken again (attacking the other person in the mean time is a very ineffective use of this emotion.)
      c. Love - Express it!
      d. Fear - An unknown that's perceived as danger. Turn this into curiosity unless you know it's objectively dangerous. In this day an age, we tend to think the unknown is dangerous when it's often not. Curiosity helps us asses the unknown without freaking out.
      Etc. The list goes on as to the cause of emotions and how to use the effectively.

    What people often get wrong is that emotions aren't there to be 'controlled.' They exist to guide you. Emotions are essentially a compass. Everybody is born with the exact same capacity for emotions. Chances are, if you are a person who feels "very emotional" a lot of the time, what you really are is emotionally repressed. You feel shame or fear because your emotions were invalidated when you were little. You feel emotional because you don't KNOW what significance to assign emotions, because you never learned it as a child. Maybe your parents weren't particularly attuned to you, maybe they were a bit neglectful (I know mine were). But it's okay once you understand this it stops being a burden and you start to feel more in alignment with yourself.

    • @PrincessPoine
      @PrincessPoine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is literally me and my past, and it effects me so much in my adult life now and I'm trying to understand myself and what to do. Could you elaborate on what you meant by you don't know what significance to assign emotion??

    • @sopaipillapesadilla7023
      @sopaipillapesadilla7023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@PrincessPoine sure thing. by that I mean, you may feel sad without understanding why... And you feel bad about feeling sad "for no reason". This could be because you grew up in an environment that looked down in negativity. Your parents might have made you feel like you were ungrateful rather than helping you understand that sometimes its okay to feel sad, because sadness could be part of grief, or a sense of loss, etc. And if you meditate or go to therapy you can begin to understand why you feel sad and then feeling sad no longer feels like a burden but a natural reaction to things in your life, and that's okay.

      Thanks for this comment. I'm a sensitive person Growing up, my big sister called me 'moody' all the time and would make fun of me. I quickly learned to suppress my emotions since I would be shamed when I showed it, which ultimately led to me being even more sad. As an adult I am now working on embracing my emotions more and not judging myself for feeling them.

    Found your videos a few days ago and they're great. They really align with how I'm approaching my mental health while providing constructive tools and insight.
    I have found journaling one of the two best ways to resolve my negative feelings along side of exercise. Writing the words in my head down gives me a focus other than those thoughts, while still thinking about them, and lets me examine them as an external problem. I can put a thought/feeling down on paper rather than letting it rattle around in my skull From there I can look directly at it and it's much easier to rationalize or manipulate the "problem" on paper.

One of the Goth kids asked if his girlfriend stepped on his heart with stiletto shoes and told him he could hang out with them and write poems about death and how pointless life is. Butters declined and explained that even though he is sad, at the same time he's really happy that something could make him feel that sad.

    But what if you just feel bad about something and dont even know what that emotion is? Like theres this sinking feeling thats just bringing you down and you dont even know what the feeling is? What if its a mix of feelings and theyre irrational to the point where you dont even understand why youre feeling that way, so you can't know how they could be trying to protect you????

      Imagine it like a ball of emotional yarn which has to be untangled. You need to work one loose string at a time. Those might be repressed emotions (your imaginary self wouldn't allow your real self to feel emotions because it deems them wrong) and the best solution is to find a therapist, but I also recommend journaling (which has to be as sincere as any therapy session otherwise it woludn't work).

      I don’t really know if this will help but if it is a matter of not knowing what to call it, picturing the feeling as an object really helps because you don’t have to name it you just have to think of the feeling itself. I did this exercise and I didn’t know what emotion I was feeling I just knew that it felt like a granite bowl of lava so I just talked to the lava and understood the feelings better.

      Firstly, you'll likely have to sit with it and try to focus on one at a time in order to describe it to the best of your ability. It will be an intuitive process. That will tell you a lot so that you can move forward from there as for what it is. Often cases like that are usually more tied to your past, like childhood. So once you have figured out one or more, you can then try to trace it back to when you first felt that way; and it should also help you remember what triggers that emotion in the first place and how it relates to the present issue. Just remember that any memory you have was created by an impactful moment, usually an extreme emotion. Also I must admit that some memories will have an image while others may not. We are capable of having emotional memories with no image which happens if you were very young or had a traumatic experience that forced you to block it out. This will also be an intuitive and meditative like process where you let the answer come to you if you are unable to remember when actively trying to. As things come up, make sure to question it if you need further clarification. Besides that, my only question would be whether or not you were taught to suppress emotions because not being able to identify emotions most often happens when we are taught that they are unacceptable and/or didn't have someone to help us understand them when we were having a hard time with them as children. (Sorry if it sounds weird, but I did this a year ago and it helped me. Looking into beliefs that you were taught as a child about yourself and the world is also important so that you know what is true to you verses what you were taught to believe. I feel you and I really hope all these comments help).

    Emotions are neither negative nor positive. They're the inside of your head trying to get outside. They're there to motivate you to do something. Whether you want to do it, and the resulting comfort level you feel associated to said motivation is what makes people interpret that.

    This is so interesting and actually helpful. The thing I'd find a bit difficult is trying to interpret the feeling, because it might be a mix of a lot of emotions, and it's not always easy to pinpoint the exact emotional that has emerged. You just feel weird and uncomfortable inside sometimes.

    for me understanding that emotions don't need to be judged as positive or negative and knowing that all they are is clues you send yourself to kick start and figure out your thought process needed to understand the situation you're in was (and still is) a very big part of learning how to deal with my erratic and impulsive hyperemotional behaviour.
    i have BPD, and i can now say i can control the way i react when i feel emotions and can semi-clearly see (or predict) the thought process that may come after, to then decide if i can keep going or need to sway to a different path a little. now, that doesn't mean i desire or want or even need to change my emotions in any way shape or form, since emotions always have purpose, like i said before (just wanted to clarify).
    the mindfullness exercise you showed could be very helpful for a lot of people, so thanks for putting it in!!

  • @VictorZepeda22

    Its human nature to have a negative bias in your thought process. Foreseeing terrible outcomes is a form of preparation and defense. It has gotten humans this far. Recognizing this as my body having my back helps me not get too worked up about those thoughts appearing in the first place.

    This is related to a form of therapy, IFS (Internal Family Systems). It's the practice of discussing your feelings and thoughts (as if they are separate entities) and working through your issues. In one case, you may talk to your perfectionist part, who only criticizes you so much to motivate and make sure you're working to the highest potential, and have to make them realize their negative effects on you but give them a new purpose (create a better relationship). Through this practice, people can relieve passed-downed insecurities, trauma, and self-hatred, I've personally found this to be a means to improve my relationship with myself and to love every part of me. If anyone is looking into getting therapy or is in midst of finding a new social worker, look for someone who is professionally trained in IFS. All you need to do is have an open heart and mind. I hope this helps someone, and remember that you are always valuable and necessary.

    negative emotions are just markers of information! a bit like an "annoying" but ultimately helpful mum, it's tempting to ignore their advice but the more you do this, the worst things get. also bad if you follow this advice blindly. the way i think about it is basically - don't be a brat! don't ignore them, they come with a heap of wisdom, they're on your side ❤️
