Glad to see you got it up and running. There are two ways to go about reset on the Atari 8-Bit. The most straightforward is to press the button on the cartridge, THEN press the reset button on your keyboard. Or, you can open up the machine and install the jumper wire and just use the button on the cartridge (or a BackButton). I've installed the wire on an Atari 400 and XEGS. If you sign up to the BackBit Forum, I can help you locate where to install it on the 600XL/800XL. Or just do the two button solution 🙂

It is actually a signal that is sent to the I/O port; the computer is querying all the devices plugged into the SIO port (like looking for a disk drive to boot from). The SIO port is a granddaddy of the modern USB port (same engineer designed SIO and USB).

Loved my 800XL, but always preferred the slim design of the 600XL. Atari could have done the 800XL in 600XL case size, but no, they thought people wanted bigger, bigger bigger for higher spec.

Hey Taylor......... Hey Amy...........It growls while it's trying to boot from a SIO drive. If reading from a floppy disk.... Beep..beep..beep..beep....... If writing to a floppy disk, click..click..click....... One beep or click per sector. The growl, Beeps, clicks enable you to know whats happening during boot and SIO operations. The sounds can be turned off with a POKE. You should acquire a SIO floppy emulator to see the world beyond ROM paks. The 13 pin connector is the SIO connector. It IS a daisy chain...

  • @jeffreyphipps1507

I keep forgetting that Evie has made one so many different machines now. I own several of these, cause why not. The 600XL has a slightly different memory map because it has less RAM built in. Conversely, the BASIC 4002 cart won't work on the 800XL because it has both BASIC (new version) and 64K RAM. The problem is that 8-bit processors have to do some trickery to map in 64K or RAM. The Z-80 could do that with ports, but the 6502 didn't really have that option. The C-64 used a zero page specially designed port to make the 6510. Atari had other methods starting with the 800XL and going forward with the 65XE and the 130XE.
I keep sending mail. ;-) I ordered you V3 of the Famicom BASIC not tons of differences, but it does skip the opening screen and adds a few commands. Although the book is in Japanese, the BASIC programs are obvious (I think). I also have an English translation (somewhere on my server). I put lithium AA batteries in the cart, but clearly could operate with regular batteries (I just prefer lithium because they leak less). I sent another thing that arrived today (Centipede I think - it was cheap). Amy, you may want to wait until Saturday or Monday and check the box - another programming language called Programmed Inquiry, Learning or Teaching (PILOT) should be there Saturday (in theory).
I also ordered CDs of two magazines (the entire runs of two magazines), but they'll take awhile because they're coming from across the pond.
I'm still waiting to evaluate MS Atari BASIC II (which I had never heard of until I was looking for the regular 4002 Atari BASIC). That's all the news I have for now. Have fun!

back in 2019 I bought a C64 and told my sister I got one. And she was freaking out about it. She's like you need to bring it next year. I'm like sure.....if I can fix it. Well I got it fixed (1 bad ram chip and the cartridge port was all corroded) and brought it. She was very happy to see it. And my niece as well. I have the U2+ (it was before Evie announced backbit). And one of the games we played was frogger. But I'm like.....why is the river black? I remember it being blue. Also shouldn't the turtles be diving? so I checked around and eventually found another version that looked exactly like I remember, but I couldn't figure out how to make the joysticks work for that one (they worked fine on the odd original one). It was odd, but that was labeled as by sega. Anyway my niece ended up getting pretty good with it. But.....I only brought it 1 year. It's kind of pain in the but bringing the computer, the retrotink 2x pro, the giant power supply I made (I need to 3d print something smaller), and all the cables and such. I'm tempted to get a U64 so it becomes fully self contained. Or maybe a The C64. But yeah The C64 has more than one frogger. Wierd.
