  • The Lutheran hymn on which the chorale partita 'Christ lag in Todesbanden' BWV 718, performed by Leo van Doeselaar for All of Bach, is based is about the resurrection of Christ. Although the first line of the hymn and the title refer to Christ ‘in Todesbanden’, the tone soon changes, and the first verse ends with a joyful ‘alleluia!’, as do all the other six verses.
    Recorded for the project All of Bach on October 8th 2013 at St. Martin's Church, Groningen. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

    As always, the music and performance are both impeccable. Another NBS constant that I'm especially struck by here is the recording quality. The balance of the instrument and the acoustics of the space is just stunning. I think it would be very interesting to see a video featuring the wonderful engineers working behind the scenes!

    Sublime. I sometimes wonder, with the incredible intellectual facility required to create Bach’s music as representing the immense potential of that era, why the sciences weren’t more advanced for that time. Does anyone know?

    • @lesliecunliffe4450
      @lesliecunliffe4450 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Science was very advanced at the time of Bach's glorious and complex music and for the same reason, which is the explicit influence of Christianity. Empirical science and its corollary of a shared scientific method uniquely emerged in Europe in the late 16th and 17th c. Isaac Newton, one of the most brilliant men who ever lived, was born in 1643 and died in 1727. Bach was born in 1685 and died in 1750. You might want to search the numerous books on the history of science and Christianity written or edited by Peter Harrison. That way you will discover just how advanced science was at that time. I can always provide you with a list of Harrison's and others' books.

      Well, science by its definition has to be discovered or invented. I would suggest that for its time, science was very advanced. Schnitger understood acoustics, building methods, and even business practices which today we struggle to duplicate. Architects applied knowledge of materials and methods to create buildings which have lasted centuries. And of course, Bach understood aspects of music that we still cannot grasp.

      The great Johannes Kepler, acknowledged as one of the greatest scientists ever, published "Harmonices Mundi" (The Harmony of the World) in 1619. In it he proposed that harmony, as expressed in geometry, music, astrology, and the rotation of the planets, was the organising principle behind all creation. He followed Plato and Pythagoras in this thread of scientific thought, but science has since departed from this path of enquiry. But Bach's music is surely a perfect expression of this harmony - do we need any more proof?
