BECOMING AN ADIRONDACK WINTER 46er // Final summit on Gothics

  • We chronicle Mike's and Tom's journey to become Adirondack Winter 46ers. The final summit is atop Gothics Mountain. We enjoyed blue skies and amazing views from the summit. We were overjoyed to enjoy our ADK Winter 46er with a group of friends that helped us along the way.
    The Adirondack Mountains in the winter are both beautiful and brutal. Winter Mountaineers can expect to encounter ice, blizzard-like winds, large amounts of snow, and sub-zero temperatures making summits challenging and sometimes dangerous. They will also be rewarded with seemingly unreal blue skies and crisp landscapes. The first recorded winter 46er was Edgar B. Bean in March of 1962, 37 years after Herbert Clark and the Marshall brothers became the first 46ers. As of 2020, there have been over 13,000 46ers but only 971 winter 46ers, proving that becoming a winter 46er is no easy task.

    Thank you to everyone who helped Tom and I achieve our winter 46er. I am very excited to be part of the elite company that have a "W" next to their 46er number.

    Congrats! My friend finished his Single Season Winter 46 around the same time I finished my regular in 2018. Winter can be exhausting when you have to breakout trails and a bit intimidating if your solo but its so beautiful there in the winter :)

      Thank you, winter is my favorite time to hike in WNY and ADK. I always say "No bears, no bugs, no rocks, and no mud" and far fewer people.

    Congrats!!! I didn't realize how few have accomplished this. Maybe living in NY and being a part of ADK groups it's just a perception it's much more popular. Sounds like winter hikes are the way to avoid people and crowds. Lesson I picked up from this one -- even after checking gear inside before heading to the cars, check again AS the gear goes into cars to leave.

      Thank you, I was really surprised that the number of winter finishers is less than 1k. It is short season, requires special gear, knowledge, and is not easy. We have all forgot gear, but snowshoes were pretty critical. BUT, we have all done it. I was glad he caught up. Thanks for watching!

      @@OutsideChronicles if it was easy it'd be accomplished by more! It was also neat hearing you all talk about when you started. Puts it in persepective that it can take years and thats ok and normal. One adventure at a time and enjoy it.

      @@bucky716 You bet. My friend's first regular 46er was in 1979 and he did not finish up until 2016. There is no need to rush. Enjoy every part of it. I have climbed a few of the peaks several times with friends and family before finishing my 46er. I just love the mountains.

    Do you know how long it takes to hike adirondack loj road to marcy dam to avalanche lake & back to adirondack loj road? dont wanna hike avalanche pass

    • @OutsideChronicles
      @OutsideChronicles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say how long it will take you, but I can say it is 4.4 (8.8 RT) miles from the Loj to Avalanche Lake. FYI, Avalanche Pass is before Avalanche Lake. I am guessing you are referring to the ladders and hitch up matildas along Avalanche Lake.
