Thanks M.E. Is there anyone that has some, I think historical explanation to why this band, when acting alone (not in massed band) has the tuba players in the second row. The other Guards band has them in the third row. Or perhaps, so has they always done....
Hello tram90, I don't know the answer, but I can say that in 2023 the Band of the Coldstream Guards had tubas in the 2nd row, and cornets in the 3rd row. In recent appearances in 2024 they had the tubas in the 3rd row and the cornets in the 2nd row. Also when I saw some of the RAF bands recently, in some cases they had euphoniums in the front row mixed with the trombones, and in other cases they were further back, with the tubas. Obviously where the various instruments are positioned will have an effect on the overall sound of the band when heard from different directions. Maybe it just depends on how many of each type of instrument there are on each day, or maybe there's a deeper reason for the changes and differences. Sorry I can't help more than that.
