it can be necessary and backfire. backfire is sometimes a tactical necessity. just make sure the backfire doesn't hang mate and that it gives you compensation.

A lot of people think f6 was the losing move for Caruana, but they overlook the fatal misplay of queen taking f2, thus preventing f3 removing his winning chances.

To answer the question when F3/F6 are probably vaild moves: you can play it if the underlying thread doesn't exist anymore. After queenside castle, there is no weekend king. Rules does not exist out of nothing - they have a purpuse. As Ben explained, F3/F6 drasticly weakens the king and creates open diagonals to attack the king. Without this precondition, the F3/F6 rule may(!!!!) not apply anymore.

I hate to post a serious comment on a Ben Finegold video, but I'd love to get a solid explanation of why f4/f5 aren't so bad, given that they seem to share the same issues (opening up the diagonal to the king and the 7th rank).

A pawn on f4 is attacking the center, isn't as in the way for your bishop, and you can play g3 to defend it, forming a pawn chain. Also, you are a tempo closer to queening the pawn, f3 isn't even a tempo ahead of the starting position.

Look, I can always appreciate more chess content. But I am beginning to think Ben Finegold is inauthentic. While I used to watch his content and enjoy it, I have increasingly become suspicious of him. Recently, in a Facebook group, many people presented evidence that he may have been involved with norm factories and played inauthentic games to obtain his grandmaster status. If this is true, I simply cannot support him any longer. I have already unsubscribed from his channel. Also, he is very off putting. He acts nothing like a grandmaster should. He should carry himself with some prestige. He acts rude and arrogantly.
