    Thank you SLCC! These videos with experts who explain things so clearly and with humour (if they've got it!) are absolutely excellent. I'm just above beginner level and these are instructive and inspirational. Lessons learnt:
    * Exchange bad pieces for good pieces
    * Protect your king early by castling
    * Castling diagonally opposite means a draw is less likely
    * If you've castled and your opponent has not, open up the centre
    * Prefer to mate rather than gratuitous piece taking

Grandmaster Ben Finegold proved with his witty quips that his obvious intellect isn't limited to chess. I clicked on this and immediately went to full screen without reading the description, I was then surprised to see that this came from the St Louis Chess Club, I thought this was straight from New York City. I was the only one to beat our 8th grade math teacher. But like when you start getting into advanced chess theory and people who study it, it's so incredibly humbling how out of my league I am. At around 26:30 when he is comparing c6 to Rg7 he mentions that a computer probably prefers Rg7. I got curious and checked using Stockfish and it actually prefers c6 over Rg7. But neither move is the best move as SF prefers bringing the the rook to h1 by either castling or moving the king to d2 or e2.

      Interesting, however...
      As Meredith said, "I'm an American, we don't study any of this"
      Seriously, none of them even know it's German (does the kid who said "German?" really count?).
      And then English doesn't have a /ts/ phoneme, so even if they did know this stuff, a native English speaker would have to specially train their articulatory tract just to code-switch into German to two words, which is a bit suspicious if you ask me.

    • @thomasscholz2569
      @thomasscholz2569 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      "itself" and "outside" are two common English words with that phoneme. You can find it also in many plural or genitive case words, like "contents", "lots", "pants", "shorts" and so on. I don't think this needs any special training. :)

    • @okuno54
      @okuno54 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      English does not have a /ts/ phoneme. It has /t/+/s/ clusters. Notice that in every example you gave the [ts] appears either across a syllable boundary or morpheme boundary. Notice also that syllable-initial *[ts] is disallowed in English, though it is allowed elsewhere, which would be extraordinarily odd if [ts] were a phoneme.
      In contrast, it is well-accepted that German has a /ts/ phoneme. Notice that it appears syllable-initially twice in "zugwang". English speakers have no experience with this pattern of sound production, so some time must be set aside to practice production if they are ever to get it right.
      I am trying to decide if you are a German, or a native English speaker who has learned German and is trying to show off their accent. If the latter, you've got no excuse; if the former, just remember that Germans pronounce loanwords from English "wrong" too, at least by your standards.

    • @thomasscholz2569
      @thomasscholz2569 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I am a German, and yes, my English is terrible. :) I get your argument, yet I don't believe that it is hard to learn this. I'll ask friends who are native English speakers the next time I meet them.

So someday when you're a grandmaster come look at this lecture on youtube, look at g5 and go: "O man, now I know what he meant" [...] g5 here's if I had an engine which I do but it would take me seconds to find so I'm not going to look for it. They would say g5 is the worst."
    Actually, g5 is the best move in this position accordingly to Stockfish 8:
    10.... g5 11.Bg3 Ne4 12.Ne5 Nxe5 13.Bxe5 f6 14.Bg3 e5 15.Qh5 Bf5 16.Bxe4 dxe4 17.Qxh6 Rf7 18.Qh5 exd4 19.cxd4 Rh7 20.Qe2 Be6 21.O-O Bd5 22.h3 Qe7 23.Rfc1 Rf8 24.Rab1 Qf7 25.Rb2 Bc6 26.Qd1 f5 27.Be5 Qe6 28.Qc2 f4 29.Rcb1 fxe3
    There were three bad moves in this game by Black: 8...a6; 15...b5 (instead of e5); 16...Qe7 (instead of Kg7), which led to the Black defeat. Following 18...Qg7 (instead of Qe8) and then 19...Ra7 (instead of e5) made the very bad situation even worse.

    can someone tell me why, at 18.35, you don't just check with the knight to B4? Unless i'm missing something, he has to take knight with pawn, then you take pawn with queen, then it's check mate in 2, right?

    • @andrewdziubek4314
      @andrewdziubek4314 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, that Checkmate takes longer than moving the rook over. See, instead of taking the knight on B4, black can move the King onto G1. Black can then just take the H3 pawn and threaten chekmate, but white can again slow him down by moving his Queen to e5, threatening the rook and preventing white from moving Queen to H2 for checkmate. Black is forced to take white's Queen at that point with the knight, after which white should move the f pawn forward to f4. Black threatens check with the Queen on g3, causing white to retreat to h1. Black brings its knight to safety on g4, also threatening white with mate (queen moving to h2 is mate). To prevent the queen from making checkmate, white has to move the rook to f2. Black responds by taking the rook with the knight for mate. All in all, this course takes 6 moves, whereas the rook moving over causes mate in 4 moves.
      TL;DR he doesn't have to take the knight with the pawn, so your method is slower.

    Sorry. I'm bad at chess but at 18:25 wouldn't the correct defense would be White Knight E2 not to protect the pawn but attacking the rook instead? In fact, the play before that where he moves his queen away from the queen trade I'd still make the Knight E2 play because I would still trade queens but I would move the rightmost rook to a more central position and still have the knight attacking your rook. Am I wrong?

    • @gabrielefiappo813
      @gabrielefiappo813 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heaven Studios after Ne2, Qxh3; Nxd4, Rxd4; then the only way to prevent checkmate the next move (.., Rg4#) is to sacrifice the queen to move the rook and make space for the king to escape. Then again, you're just delaying the inevitable

    • @gabrielefiappo813
      @gabrielefiappo813 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @gabrielefiappo813
      @gabrielefiappo813 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is another continuation actually, after .., Qxh3; f3, but .., Rh4; then everything beside Qxh4, losing the queen, lead to checkmate in one (if Rf2 or Qf2 are played, simply .., Qh1#; otherwise, .., Qh2#)
      EDIT: .., Qxh3; Nxd4, Rxd4; f3, Rh4 this is a better continuation, since the checkmate can now be prevented by Qd2. Then I guess the game will be open again, so probably Qxh3 isn't the best answer to Ne2, which probably is the best move in that position. Bravo!
