This Kite Can Move a Cargo Ship Without a Fuel

  • Discover the extraordinary potential of wind kites in revolutionizing maritime travel and energy production. While commonly viewed as playthings, wind kites are redefining their role as key players in sustainability and transportation. These kites hold the incredible power to move colossal cargo ships, weighing up to 165,000 tons, by harnessing the might of high winds.
    Traditionally, cargo ships rely on bunker fuel, a cost-effective but ecologically harmful option. Emitting toxic pollutants equivalent to millions of cars in a single day, these vessels have long posed environmental challenges. Enter the Seawing, a 5,400-square-foot kite system mounted on a multimillion-dollar cargo ship. This innovative French creation significantly reduces fuel consumption by up to 20% and curbs pollution. Operating seamlessly, the kite deploys when the ship enters international waters, taking advantage of optimal wind altitudes and patterns, effectively towing the vessel.
    Moreover, wind power extends beyond ship propulsion. The Airborne Wind Energy System, with its kite-on-tether configuration, generates energy akin to wind turbines but with fewer resources. The kite dynamically ascends to higher altitudes, optimizing power production. Its efficient generator channels surplus energy to the grid. This inventive application of wind energy holds promise not only for cleaner maritime travel but also for broader sustainable energy solutions.
    In a world demanding eco-conscious innovation, these kites are emblematic of a future where nature's forces steer us toward greener horizons.

We see this with wheels every day this kite function vary differently as the sale gose as high as 2000 feet into the air were that one sail can pull that cargo ship. Air bus is in suport and is a major funder. It's seen working action right now and as had secsesfull proof of concepts however I don't think it's going to be effective as it's mich slower HOWEVER this same principle is being applied to wind generation hoisting the sail 2000-3000 ft meaning you don't need to wait for wind anymore to generate electricity.

    The merchant marine abandoned wind power a long time ago as it is so unreliable. Looks and sounds good but ultimately just as reliable. We still use a phrase today 'in the doldrums' which refers to ships without motion as the wind was not strong enough for a long period.

    • @johnh539
      @johnh539 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is never a good idea to abandon technological innovation if the prize is a reduction of thousand of tones of a particularly dirty fuel representing hundreds of thousands of Dollars cost to all of us.
      If it is worth it depends partly on how easily deployable etc it is.
      The Doldrums' is a geographical aria of Ocean and has been known for hundreds of years but so have the "Trade winds". Bare in mind these ships are crossing the oceans so a sail can be deployed practically all the way if you follow the trade winds.

      John,
      technical inovation, please, that is so illogical. Simple mathematics provides the power required to propel a ship and that will not come from a relatively small area of sail.

    I do not believe this. An average VOC ship could carry 650 tons of goods and needed about 450 m2 of sail to move it at a slow pace.
    So you need at least 450.000 m2 of sail to move this 650.000 ton ship at a slow pace.

      it spins the generator while getting all the way high and then the kite is closed like to half the size to less drag and pulled back, repeat.
