    Still a good guide two years later. Some things have changed on the Virtual Desktop settings menus, but the key things still apply. I used an older TP Link 5G as an dedicated access point for the Quest 3 and used VD to help me pick the channel with the highest bitrate for streaming VR...went from about 450mb without the dedicated router to 1200....happy. Thanks for making this. Well done.

      Iv'e got an ASUS A15 5800H 16Gb RTX3070 8Gb and for the last 2 months Steam has been disabling my GPU so that I am left with only the performance of the APU.
      Which while obviously not as good is still pretty impressive.

      @@favscripts7680 Absolutely. Thing is that I have both an AMD APU and NVIDIA GPU. The NVIDIA GPU is being disabled in favor of the AMD APU. Been complaining to Steam about it for 2 months straight and all they seem interested in is getting me to report the performance data. Considering that they have a project in development with AMD that's a bit sus?

      @@glenrisk5234 Make sure to reference your specific laptop website for how to enable your nvidia gpu for gaming, but in some cases you'll need to enable it through the nvidia control panel or specific laptop software. I think it may be something else besides steam which causes your system to use the amd apu, as it's a common issue for many laptops to revert to the built in apu for power-saving benefits.

    Spot on, people dont know this, but 5ghz is a "greenfield" spectrum, as the name implies, it's meant to be used in a clear open field. For best performance put an access point in the room you're using it in

    I bought the HUAWEI WiFi AX3 (Quad-Core) and I'm extremely happy and have zero complaints with my experience. And I prefer using Virtual Desktop. And yes AirLink is nice introduction for people wanting to try wireless VR. And then I'd switch to Virtual Desktop, as the quality is better and settings in general just allow for more customization.

    I go for visuals over latency. I don't play any pcvr games that really demand too low latency. I usually sit around 60-70ms of latency, but the visuals are nice and crisp. I do have a setup that puts me at 48ms and has good visuals, but I use it less.
    VD works way better for me than airlink. It also looks more vibrant.

    For those who don't have the budget for a monster router, I've got the stock router that comes with my virgin media broadband (Superhub 3) and works fine, doesnt drop frames at all. It's not wifi6 but I use 5ghz on a DFS channel that's meant for radar so theres very low chance of interference.

    • @00Clive00
      @00Clive00 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was surprised how well the Virgin Hub 3 worked, I can even stream through the floor to the room above and don't get any lag. I also have a Tp link WiFi 6 router and the latency is exactly the same.

      My Comcast cable modem/router works great for VD or Airlink. It gives me 855MBPS which is enough for 120fps. My router is in the same room I game in and my PC is hooked up with ethernet.

    • @juggy2006
      @juggy2006 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also use the hub3 but my VR area is behind a wall with wires and pipes so the signal isnt very strong sadly. I'm gonna need another AP in the VR area :(. Not sure why people keep recommending wifi6 lol its actually overkill for airlink if you're close to the AP.

  • @HoshPak
    @HoshPak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I find this is really exciting tech from a networking engineer's POV. I have my PC in the living room right now because I have no dedicated room to place it. If I had, I would stream my games by default as I hate the noise of spinning fans. It's the same with VR.
    Edit: One more thing about H.264 vs HEVC (aka H.265). The latter one does a way better job compressing the Image. That means you can get either get better image quality at the same bandwidth or reduce bandwidth maintaining the same image quality. Reducing the bandwidth us probably to prefer in this case as it will reduce the overall latency. Using it requires a GTX 10 series GPU or later, however. Newer cards usually make better use of this feature due to hardware improvements.

I used to stick to cable vr, not anymore Just plugging in another router is best, fixed all issues I had with streaming. Lets me focus on pc performance. i currently have tplink ac1750. its best at 70-80mbps. Its pretty good in terms of latency and consistency, it just looks kinda meh in visuals. if you are on low end systems, this is the perfect entry point imo. Found it in my closet, i do suggest upgrading with one from amazon, ebay etc.

    With airlink I'd have to freaking go to my pc, turn on airlink, go into my headset, pair and connect, then launch. Then I get in there and it gives me some trash menu bar with icons.

    I really didn't want to get a dedicated router since it was a fairly significant expense, but ultimately had to since my main router at home was an older crappy non-5ghz router.
    I don't regret it, because it had a major improvement of performance with game streaming. With a proper router and a good PC, playing PCVR wirelessly is so much better than it was for me before and I use it very frequently. Generally much more preferable to trying a wired setup of some kind.

    Or would it have to be primary router->quest router->PC

  • @TheDarmach

    You don't need an expensive access point for fast streaming. Belkin 3200 or Totolink 5000R are two great and cheap solutions. Belkin has 160MHz wide AX which nets plenty of troughput - more than quest will ever use up.

But the latency is still noticeable for me with games that require twitch response. Like the bow and arrow game in the lab. By the sounds of it buying a dedicated wifi6 router wont improve on this much?

    i think afaik for steam games all the "vr graphics Quality" option does, is changing your steam vr quality settings without going into its menus directly which is why i have it on medium and manualy configure it afterwards on a per game Basis inside steamvr (but i don't know about how or if it works with oculus apps)
