I work for an ophthalmologist and a couple years ago we had a patient call in for an emergency appointment to dee the doctor because she was separating her lashes with a needle and poked her eyeball with it. Lash brushes are good enough! Lol. Love your videos.

We used safety pins in the 80s ! We were highly committed to getting those natural looking feathery lashes . I used the little ones then would bend it, never had one accident! The brushes and combs just didn't compare unfortunately.
Disclaimer: I don't recommend anyone use safety pins to separate their lashes 😎
Also, why they call them " safety pins "is beyond me! 😅

@@krissykriss328 In Spanish we call them "imperdibles" that translates as something like "unloseables". Sorry, I couldn't find if the word even existed in English. I found "unmissable" but I'm not sure if you can use it for an object that can't be lost.

I had no idea Marilyn did the “take the makeup off” trick but I do that to myself everyday.
I apply my base makeup, then take water on a paper towel and gently just dab. It takes some of the base off but for whatever reason, just makes my face look flawless. Soft. Even toned and poreless. I don’t understand how or why it works in me, but it does. ❤

I'm just going to start referring to you as a makeup historian. It pleases me to the depths of my soul that you included Josephine Baker and Dorothy Dandridge in your video. I always thought of them as beautiful. I also thought that Grace Kelly had great fashion sense and might have been photogenic. I've just never seen a bad picture of her. I think of Jennifer Lopez in the same way. And Mae West....I wish she had movies done about her. I didn't know until Dita Von Teese mentioned that she didn't move to Hollywood and sign a movie contract until she was 40. Mae West acted in, wrote, directed and produced so many things. It just seems like she doesn't get the credit that she could have gotten. Please continue to share what you've learned about these iconic women.

Isn't it just like your BF dropped by to show you the latest beauty secrets when you watch one of Erin's videos? She makes you feel like she's sitting right next to you guiding your hand until you get the technique just right and the color matches your skin tone, or the eyeliner is drawn fully, or the curlers are removed and your hair is perfectly coiffed. And, the whole time she's sitting there with you, she has a pile of Hollywood gossip magazines that she's paging through and keeping up a steady stream of conversation about the stars' beauty routines and their supposed best kept secrets. Erin's depth of knowledge about the history and origins of makeup is truly incredible, but it's her warm and genuine nature that makes Erin such a stand out SUPER STAR from among all the glamorous stars she shares information about!! 🌟✨💫 It is truly a gift to be able to talk to hundreds, but make it seem as though you are having a one -to-one conversation. I’ve been doing a variation on that Marilyn tip on my own - I spritz my finished look (before or instead of setting spray) with witch hazel based toner in a spray bottle, wait for it to set down into a “mask” and then firmly press, not wipe, a tissue over the face to pick up as much I can before finishing with a spray if I want to lock that in. It’s great for a natural look.

    • @erinparsonsmakeup

I think it's so important that you show how many looks are perfectly attainable for average people, and not a genetic lottery win. In my life, I've seen so many bemoan their looks when the difference between them and a movie star was a stylist, a make-up artist, and a hairdresser.

You make my soul happy every upload I followed u and was just so happy u came to TH-cam to share ....your knowledge......there are things I have collected for years makeup and hair antiques ...plus ancient artifacts I only have a few Egyptian mainly and keeping a true love for old Hollywood. The stories ...Tricks... tips things I feel has been lost ..I've study ancient civilizations and Old Hollywood for 20 years amateurly ...A professional makeup Artist and cosmetologists has been my profession but I did go back to school just for the knowledge....history rituals and beauty is my life interest...funny mix people say ...I maybe digging in the dirt one day and the next in a wig and red highheels...you are cut from the same cloth I feel..Thanku for these videos ❤

Also I feel like perhaps the vintage max factor panstik had a more oilier consistency making it easier to take off with a tissue simply by patting it as Marilyn described, but this Krayolin tv stick is very dry and matte, I have this one so I know it’s really matte. Also the modern pan stick is also not that matte. So maybe Erin you can try with max factor ? 😊

    • @erinparsonsmakeup
      @erinparsonsmakeup  ปีที่แล้ว +6

I actually don’t find it matte. 😊 but not radiant either - I have the old pan sticks and the texture seemed very similar to me. But maybe I’ll do a video using an actual Panstik from that time. Hopefully it won’t affect my skin eek! But I’m curious to see the difference. Also I’ve seen pics of Marilyn at her makeup table with the Panstik product so I do believe she would have used it exactly. I even have a quote from whitey on which color 🤩

I really appreciate your warm vocal quality and passion for make-up artistry. They lured me in! AND...even though it can be dangerous if you don't go gentle and slow, I separate my lashes with a small safety pin as needed. The lashes have to be wet though and I find it works best if you are mixing 2 different mascaras (which I do often). I will be trying a few of these, that soot eyeshadow is sexy but understated. Thanks for the intel, sis! 💗✨

The makeup worn by the women then created classic beauties. Sometimes less is more. It gave them a beautiful natural look. You could be exotic or the girl next door. We have so much to learn from the history of cosmetics. Thank you for teaching and showing beauty of all ages.

I LOVE you SOOOO much! This video is probably my favorite so far because I am the only person I know who keeps a cable subscription just so I can watch TCM on demand! And I mostly watch films from roughly 1935- 1945, and let’s be honest, 37- 42 are the BEST years… give me Joan (Crawford, Fontaine & Blondell), give me Bette, Jean, Olivia, Rosalind, Lana, Katherine, Glenda, Jimmy, Cary, Franchot, Clarke, Errol, the trio of Roberts… Taylor, Montgomery, Young…. Girl, you know. It just makes my heart so happy to know that someone else loves that old golden age where they didn’t have to use sex, violence or profanity to make a great film, and don’t get me wrong, I’m down with some sex, violence and profanity… but they kept it classy!
Thank you for what you’re doing!

Absolutey adore this video!💕 I'm 53 & started using every cosmetic I could get my hands on in the 80's as a teen. My mom raised us on old Hollywood movies and was always telling me about tips she'd heard thru the years that old Hollywood stars used. Of course, I tried to incorporate them into my 80's routine. I thought the Marlene Dietrich soot eyeshadow was an absolute genius trick. I heard she invented it during World War 2 while on the road supporting the troops & makeup was scarce. Long story long, lol, depending on how much vaseline I used or how sweaty I got in gym class, it worked really well...sometimes!😄 Love your channel!🥰
